The best way to minimize fungus nats that has worked for me is to bottom water. They lay eggs in top inch or two of soil, so if you bottom water, the top soil doesn't get as wet/moist so they won't lay eggs....

Yeah, over-wet soil or soil that stays wet for too long is usually the reason for gnats, in my experience. They like the rotting roots.

As someone who is getting their degree in horticulture, miracle grow isn’t that bad. It’s a perfectly good mix for houseplants. There’s cheaper options, but if I got it for cheap I would 100% use it

I have over 250 house plants. So, you just wait. 😂😂
I’ll definitely have to look more into the magikal properties of them!
They’re pOthos, not with an a. ❤️your first one is actually a scindapsus. 😁

Monstera Siltepecana is amazing and grows SO fast. One of my favorites, they enjoy to grow up instead of vining. Your creeping fig loves HUMIDITY. Philodendron hederaceum actually, not a cordatum. That’s a different variety. ❤️
Indirect light actually means shade. So, your begonia is probably enjoying that shade.
Im so happy you’re finding this hobby so amazing too, there is so much to learn when it comes to growing.

Marantaceae are the Marantas, Calathea (geoppertia), Ctenanthe and Stromanthe- so there are more you can find! 😍 Plus many others in the arrowroot family.
If you want a little surprised cutting box- I would be happy to send you some babies! ❤️

How fun! I have a jade and pearl pothos, I see it as a representation of myself. The better the pothos does, the more I'm behaving like myself and not other people's expectations of me.

I enjoyed this video on your plants. I have a fern and a Christmas cactus at this time and both are thriving. I let them tell me what they need. Right now, my cactus has baby blooms on it, so it needs a lot of water. I want to get house plants for my room upstairs. Please do update videos on your plants, especially if you acquire new ones.

I had a prayer plant inside an outdoor terrarium in Anaheim CA and it completely took over. Sad I had to move. (The prayer plant “Kerchoviana,” also called the rabbit's foot plant, is a popular variety of Maranta leuconeura. These common houseplants have light grayish green leaves with dark splotches (which resemble rabbit tracks) between the veins. The underside of the leaves is a shade of silvery blue.)

I’m starting my collection of plants and aloe was my first plant along with flaming Katy and my aloe is so much bigger in just the few months I’ve had him and it amazes me how resilient it is from being bought in the cold wintertime and not looking to good to looking strong and healthy. Definitely my plant baby lol man plants just make me stare in awe and respect for their beauty and resilience

Hey Frankie!!! Unrelated to the video (it was lovely, thank you so much :)) but I saw your book in a store the other day! It was right next to Witchery by Juliet Diaz and the bookstore (Porter Books in Boston) is a pretty great place they had a podcast studio and they teach kids creative writing for free on Saturdays- anyway, I almost bought it (but I promised myself I wouldn’t buy any more witchy books until I finished the ones I have…) I was so happy to see it there! Thought I’d let you know :)

Hi Frankie, again, a lovely video. I enjoyed all of it. The way you talked about your plants reminds me of the way I talk about my kids. It's just hilarious how similar it is. 🤣 So cute!
But it actually gives me a little bit of perspective change on my houseplants. I think I have limiting beliefs about not being good with houseplants when they show me their needs. I have never thought about it that way: the plants are communicating with me and that's a good thing! Yes, obviously!!
I only came to this conclusion while observing my kids and their needs.
But houseplants are living beings as well, they are kind of the same as children.
Thank you, Frankie. Blessed be and have a great weekend!

My ivy aren't so happy imo. Neither is my peace lily, however I've recently (within the last 6mo) learned I've been repotting noobly my whole life! Getting rid of the old soil is a big deal. It's def made a big difference in my rescue plants, the most recent a silver ribbon fern. Fungus gnats are a giant PITA. With your trap it's helpful at night to have a light there. B@stards come to the light at night.
I love ferns! My first fern, Ferny, is getting close to being 20yrs old! I got her from a big box store end of the season clearance bench for 2 bucks lol my reasoning behind those terrible looking plants is "neglect training." I wasn't great with houseplants at the time, but my logic being if it survived that much abuse I should be able to keep it alive!
Rando tip/thought - i found this year that if I planted or repotted to my witches calendar on a day that is slated to be a "good planting day." HAS made a big difference in growth and health of my houseplants and garden.
Ps miracle grow whatever store brand soil is on sale hasn't been an issue for me. For me it's only been that I didn't know how to take care of my plants in the first place. Honestly most of my houseplants do better being ignored.... probably bc I always over watered!
I fail to remember the scientific name, but the purple wandering jew...I love her. The ease of propagatings her is a dream (except this one 3leaf piece refuses to root. I might just dump that under dirt and see if it will take). I've sold maybe a dozen of her babies when she needs to taken under control!
Sorry for the length.... plants make me happy 😊

I've been waiting for this video ☺️ I got rid of my gnat problem buy making a chunkier soil of cactus soil, orchid mix, perlite and worm casting. Typical aroid mixture ought to do it. Gnats could also be due to overwatering so letting them dry out helps. Ive also heard good things about adding mosquito bits to the soil and bottom watering. I just started collecting in March and have learned so much from plant me Ashley and harli g here on UA-cam. Btw I use miraclegro brand too 😅 except for the worm casting. A chunky mix helps though I swear

You're making me want too have more houseplants! I have a hard time keeping my cats out of them. I have been wanting a prayer plant for a while and Maranta leuconeura aren't toxic to cats... So maybe I'll give it a go. Currently I have a small bamboo, aloe vera, and a Lemon Button Fern plant in places my cats can't get to them.

    • @kthearcher3357
      @kthearcher3357 2 роки тому

I don't know if this is helpful, but giving the cats their own plants have helped us with them staying out of plants they shouldn't be in. Ours prefer oat grass versus the fancy cat grass mixes and they love lemongrass. Of course we were on top of training the kittens not to get into the pots. They will be 2yrs in September. Someone nibbed the end of an aloe leaf and chewed a single ivy leaf (also indications of them being naughty) when they were younger. Still alive. Guessing they also taste nasty, bc they haven't been nibbled since.

My red maranta is.. struggling. Only one branch left and she won’t put out any new leaves and I’m honestly surprised she’s still going. I also had a ruby slippers Rex begonia and accidentally overwatered her and she died, which i find tragic cause I brought her back from almost dead when I first got her and now her last leaf got diseased :(
