I use an old Slant Six spark plug as a piston stop. The threads are the same as the saw and a good half inch longer. I would advise against wacking on the clutch since you could poke a hole in the piston. If I'm home I just hit it with an air impact gun set on tighten.
Yah it "usually" doesn't take much to be able to crack the nut loose on these and other stuff if you can just interrupt/stop the full stroke of the piston. Just did the drive belt on a riding mower. To remove the front clutch/pulley. I had to resort to going in through the plug. I actually used bungee cord. Worked great. I prefer not to stuff things in the cylinder if I can avoid it but they make plugs that do basically what your accomplishing with the longer spark plug. It's just a less aggressive surface than a spark plug hitting the piston really. People have been stuffing rope and such in there for longer than Ive been around. Just always feels a bit odd to me, stuffing other things in the plug hole. but Im always amazed at how well it can work when needed. And if there's no other way. So be it. The impact wasn't doing it. And after a bit of non perseverance, I went in through the plug and the bolt came right off. And in that instance I thought. I Should have done that in the first place. So there's that. Many ways to skin a cat as they say. Thanks for the suggestion of yet another way. Appreciate it.
You go through all the trouble of taking the muffler off and then risk breaking the fly wheel with a screw driver when you can simply use a piston stop. Man you a braver then i am
I do discuss that in the video, regarding using a piston stop or other options. Just sharing an option. I also discuss that it's important to understand that it's a reverse thread. Ive never really needed much force to crack the nut. Certainly not enough to break the flywheel. But certainly care should be taken. Especially if it's not understood it's a reverse thread and trying too hard to crack it when actually tightening it. Ive used a few options over the years. But not everyone has a piston stop handy and it's just another way to come at it. And it also allows your to see in and eval your piston a bit as well as clean things up . Spark arrestor etc. Just an option. But your concerns should be considered.

Nice video, but you're more likely to damage a flywheel fin or the crankcase by jamming the piston that way. You're better off stuffing some nylon rope or cord into the jug, worst thing that can happen is you get something stuck in a port, but rarely do damage to the piston or jug.
Certainly a possibility. It really didn't and shouldn't take that much force. Wasn't much resistance cracking the nut. As long as who ever is doing it understands it's a reverse thread. Presented really just as an option or alternative to what you're suggesting. Earlier this summer I opted for cord through the spark plug hole on a riding mower to install a new drive belt on a buddies mower. I actually used new clean bungie. And I have seen actual tools, plastic plugs as well sold and made to put in the plug port. I didnt have any of that and did it this way and am just sharing an alternative. There are risks really with any approach when in the wrong hands. Just have to be aware of them and take care to avoid. One of the risks that could lead to damage I would say would be not understanding or knowing it's a reverse thread. Then there can be all kinds of unwanted results.
A hunk of rope through the spark plug hole or just use an impact to get the clutch off is probably the safest way. Break a fin off the flywheel and you will really have head aches. The flywheel is only aluminum and very easy to break off a fin. But you do it the way you want.😮
Yes some rope or there is even a tool specifically designed for the purpose. Which you probably are aware of but for anyone else reading this. I think I discuss that in the video and or video description. Just showing an option or alternate to that. Impact works as well but not everyone has one.
