I've been a keyboardist for over 50 years. Whenever I feel like I'm doing pretty good, I watch this video. Then I hang my head and go practice.....
Anyone devoted to the keyboard for that amount of time is very honorable.

I was fortunate enough to hear Rick Wakeman live recently and I have to say it was one of the most magical experiences of my life. Unfortunately he gets nowhere near the amount of recognition that he deserves
He's like Ringo Star, plays with just about everyone.
He gets a lot of recognition in the synth world for sure.
In the Prog world Rick is up there with Emerson and Banks....

Wonderful how he co-ordinates playing both instruments at the same time, particularly at that speed. He's reached an amazingly high level of proficiency in his craft.

Rick started when he was a little kid. The keyboards were his life. He has his own unique style. There is not a best, there are only the greats.

I started listening to his music with Six Wives. At the time, I didn’t know he was part of Yes. After I found out, all of a sudden, I could hear his keyboards in their music. Been a fan ever since.

Rick, in addition to being both a world class key board technician and iconic prog musician, especially with Yes, writes some of the most beautiful melodies one will hear. He, Keith E. and Lord led the way in the early 70s to leading progressive rock and its wonderful experimentation to a legitimate and leading position in the musical canon. Jordan R and Dream Theater have expertly taken up the prog mantle these past 20 years and extended the genre even further.
Saw him yesterday in Tucson. He mentioned both Emerson and Lord, played a tribute to them.
Makes me cry every single time I hear him playing! He's the best of the best!
Absolutely breathtaking. As a teen in the mid to late 70s, I was not mature enough to appreciate the sheer musical talent of Rick Wakeman as well as the other members of Yes. I now appreciate them for the musical geniuses they are.

I know this is a Rick video but may I say RIP Keith Emerson who was Ricks friend and keyboard soulmate and prog rock pioneer/icon .. its a real shame that Rick and Keith never recorded anything together it would have been a masterpiece of work Im sure.

+Phil John Well said... I saw The Nice, Yes and ELP a couple of times when I was a kid. To me, Keith was flashy and classical while Rick is fussy and classical if you know what I mean. He even said in an interview that he plays in a very flashy style - why use one note when three will do, LOL.
Keith Emerson died in march 2016. I knowed both: Keith and Rick. in th 70 yyears they were my favorites.
Rick and Keith played in the same album of Ayreon: "The Theory Of Everything". At least we have an album with both of them.
Fun fact: Rick Wakeman wears long coats and cloaks to hide his third arm.

heard him live as a teenager and it brings tears to my eyes, I was just gifted a current CD of him called "Christmas Portraits" and it is like there is nothing left of this creative virtuoso?
Been going to Wakeman concerts since 1977. The jokes haven't changed and neither has the brilliant music ! Chapeau Rick.
No one ever believed he was the greatest piano player of all time, most of all not Rick himself.

I always loved Wakeman, my favorite member of my favorite band, but this just reminds me how great he is/was and how much he added to the greatness that is/was YES.
Where is Rick? My heart aches for this kind of talent again.

One of the finest keyboard players of my lifetime. This is truly one of the very best solos I've ever heard. This man was born with the music in his soul. Pure bliss flies from those fingertips!! Yeahhhh!!! BRAVO!! Thanks for providing us with this fantastic performance!! It's been quite a few years since I've seen a live performance of his, but was very fortunate over these years to see him playing with "Yes" many times :-)))

Hi.. Wakeman told a great prostate story at the rock hall of fame last month.. just on hbo.. I like rick but we all could buy Keith Emerson's music books and sound just like him.. amazing he could not stop practicing?
JazzKeyboardist1 Thanks Steve....Funny about Wakeman's comment. Poor Emerson really struggled in the end though and so sad he took his own life. I know he had some nerve damage in his hands and was worried that he would not be able to play live anymore, at least in the same capacity as before. I believe he had an alcohol addiction also and after achieving that level of Fame, perhaps he just could not face it. I was never famous of course, but I know what it feels like to have your life impacted like that. When I was young and had that terrible car accident that caused permanent nerve damage and limited my play,....prevented me from becoming a concert pianist. I had to learn to move past all that and did not even play for over 20 years. I am so very grateful for what I do have left and what I can do musically. I adapted! It really is such a shame when people go over the edge, but I can understand how frustrating it must have been for him.

I don't think I have heard a more happy and beautiful melody in my entire life. I have been a fan of YES for a while now, always give them respect any chance I get, but I had no idea Rick was on this kind of level. I wasn't 20 seconds in before tears started flooding my vision. Jordan Rudess was not wrong when he cited Rick as one of his influences. This is top tier excellence in every way.
From everything I've seen thus far I believe this is his best solo performance.

That night back in 1990 ..I had tickets to see Anderson Wakeman Buford and Howe that day I bought my first synthesizer Ensoniq VFX didn't even take it out of the box and then I saw him using it on stage I could not wait to leave and get home and play it oh my God

Yuja Wang is the ultimate Goddess of the keyboards. But Rick is a VERY close second, with all the male pretenders. But this performance by Rick is just mindblowing.😮👏👏👏👏👏👏🌹✌️
@@francoisgrenier4919 None of the mentioned above are Pretenders whatsoever as they are all actual composers and pioneers, especially Emerson. what all of these players have in common is that they are all electric keyboardplayers, Wang is not she is a master level classical pianist and have no provess with synthesizers and progressive music at all. And no, this is not Ricks best performance, this is a demonstration of speed, but is rather sloppy in comparison to what a lot of Jazz pianists and classical pianists would be able to do, Rick is a fine player in his own respect, but where his strengths lie is to play slow, and with a musical touch of his own, and he is also a very creative musician. And no Yuya Wang is not the unrivaled goddess of classical piano, as there are plenty of players that rivals here both technically and artistically. Leif Ove Andsnes, Lang Lang, The Labeque sisters, the great Horowitz. Katia Labeque for instance, is a master level classical pianist, but is also a highly skilled Jazz improvisor. There are so many different players that to rank them all like that is actually just immature and shows a lack of perspective of all the different types of players and genres out there. I would for instance argue, that a musicans like Chick Corea is far more invaluable as a musician then Wang, or Lang lang, as the musical heritage that Corea have left us as a composer is staggering. He Created music that both Jazz pianists and classical musicians in the thousands perform to this day. Chick Corea as a composer, creator of styles and expressions, inventor as a synthesist and mastery of his instrument sets him apart from other technical performers, and he is just one in a handful of great players in Jazz music that have contributed just as much to music as he have done. Herbie hancock, Joe Zawinul, Friedrich Gulda, Brubeck, Art Tatum, Bill Evans etc etc. And Also Hiromi, is an insanely technically accomplished player that can rival even the most technical of classical pianists. My point is, there really is no such thing as a "best pianist/keyboardist" in the world, to rank them is like arguing to why one colour is better then another colour, but creative musicians and composers are commonly the ones of greatest brilliance. Rick has such a flare for the dramatic and dynamic in all his solos. He takes you on a journey. I saw this solo live at jones beach long island.

I had a private (free) lesson from Rick when I was at Juilliard - he's the man. Studied at the Royal Academy dropped out to make music not just play music. Best music ever wS this collaborations with Bowie and his co-writing with Greg Howie

My god, it's been 16 years since I watched this video, dude is a legend. Anywho, it was an awesome year because I just upgraded from a 28.6Kbps dial-up connection (~330ms lag) to a 10Mbps long range point to point wireless connection (50ms to 70ms lag). Just to explain how much difference there is between the two: while on dial-up from 1991 to 2007 it took 45 minutes to download a song on Napster or four days to download Warcraft 3 cracked on mIRC. With my long range p2p wireless connection I could download a song instantly and Warcraft 3 in 16 minutes. On my current connection I could download or upload Warcraft 3 in ten seconds. Next year 10Gbps is going to be available for home and then I'll be able to download Warcraft 3 in one second, I've already installed cat7 cables which support 10Gbps.

This video is more validation of both Rick Wakeman's immense musicality, and that most of rock's very best instrumentalists come from the ranks of prog groups.
over a decade and a half later and this is still as insane as it was back when i first saw it, What I love most is the shaking of the wrist to loosen up before putting those fingers in to melt-down mode - watch the right hand at 2:40
This solo is the reason I began playing piano, all those years ago. However, Rick shaking his wrist is purely theatrical flair. It serves no actual purpose ;-)
It's not theatrical. He was developing tendon problems (qv an interview in Mojo magazine at the time). He found it helped to loosen the muscles so he wouldn't get cramps. Luckily, he started to get treatment so avoided the problems that poor Keith suffered from. He now wears an arm brace because of arthritis but still plays to the same high standard.

I used to think the really fast background part in the beginning of Close to the Edge must be a sequencer, but seeing the kinds of stuff Rick can play here with his hands, I've got no doubt he just played it without breaking a sweat.
Sequencers weren't really a thing in 1972 when Close to the edge was recorded. There is some footage from the early 70s of Yes playing that piece, and Rick can be seen playing the part in question.
Growing up in the 70s was one of the luckiest experiances. Having access to the genius of Rick, Kieth Emerson, Tony Banks, Chick Korea, etc., we were treated to some of the best keyboardists ever.
The last part sounds like Super Mario Bros when you're about to run out of time. lol
