Great content. I paid for my first home with a ms 290 a $500 pickup and a homemade log splitter. Those were a lot of long days and short nights sleeping like the dead. I sure am glad to see you put up this type of video. The youth of today do not seem to believe anything they did not see on UA-cam. This video is a stellar example of well thought out education not just another regurgitation of a book. Had I had a computer or UA-cam been around. I might not have had to work so hard. But then again I was hard headed and belonged on the struggle bus. Have a great day.
Marketplace always has lots of saws for sale where someone purchased them based off of bar size on the display shelf and the diameter of tree that fell over. The thought of cutting them from both sides never seems to cross their minds! When I head out to cut up a tree I almost always grab 3 saws. One each 50,60 and 70 cc combination has never failed to get the job done efficiently!👍
True! An 18' bar will cut a 30" log. You just have to be smarter than the tree! lol. 2 additional reasons having multiple saws is a great plan: a) if the one saw dies, breaks, or refuses to start- you aren't dead in the water. b) WHEN you eventually get pinched but good, you have another saw to cut yourself out! An extra bar and chain is handy for this as well.
Very good explanation of saw sizes! I ran 70cc saws all along. Jonsered 2171 was the last one. I still have it. My chronic Lyme has pitted my spine to where a light saw was the only way I was going to keep going. I started with a Husqvarna 346XP with a narrow kerf 20" bar and chain. I cut alot of firewood for myself with it. Then the 550XP came out. I never really fell in love with it. The computer was never right. The dealer tried different things and we got it working as good as it was going to get. Then the 550XP Mark ll came out. I absolutely love that saw!! It has great enough power that I run the regular .325 chisel chain on a 20" bar. I cut around 12 cord a year for my house and shop. We have all our land cleared now so my logger buddy brings in semi loads so no cutting down trees anymore! There is a saw for everyone!! But like you said...need to have a sharp chain!! I just end up switching chains out and then sharpening the on an Oregon bench grinder. Works great for me!! Thanks again for a great video. take care!

Like so many tools, I don’t know what chainsaw I need or like best until I use a couple. I don’t need to use them all but just using something helps you understand what works. It’s such an easy thing but so many people want the perfect answer before they buy something. Don’t wait, just get something based on good information and try it out. If it’s a good saw you’ll be able to resell it if you end up finding you like something else better for your work. Just buy something and use it!

Hey Chris, really like your videos. I have a small firewood business. I have a Echo 590 TimberWolf with a 24" bar. Runs like a champ. Thanks for the chainsaw education.
This is a great video. I'm in the market for a bigger saw, I just need to sell about a thousand face cords of wood first since people around here sell it so cheap that I can't get enough to make it worth selling wood. Good night Irene
Chris the biggest saws I have are 60 cc from there they go down. Now day’s I tend to grab a 50cc saw ether my 530 Echo or my 271 Stihl. My big saws are Echo Cs-600p and Cs620p X-series that saw loves a 28 inch bar. And I have a Ms -362 Stihl 25 inch bar .Keep on cutting
Love my 572 Husky but my 592 is a beast that you just can't choke down on a big log. Then there is my little fun Mac 10/10. I just love the sound of it. The Huskys will leave your ears ringing without protection!
I’ve got a battery powered 80 volt greenworks 16 inch saw. I’ve cut 12 cords with it so far, and felled multiple 25 inch Douglas Fir. Works amazing, and it’s one that I highly recommend!
I picked a Holtzforma 372 with a 20" bar. It's doing pretty good so far. I had Scheib over and he taught me how to sharpen a chain and it made a huge difference.
Last fall I used my jonsered 2145 for firewood worked good on the smaller stuff. so I seen a hasqvarna 272xp at my local saw shop and made an offer on it a little under what they were asking for it. A few days later I went in and picked it up. What a big difference it makes to have the power to buck wood.
Nice video Chris. You have a lot of saws and saw knowledge. Hard to find a stocking Husky pro saw dealer in my part of the world. I've managed to get what I needed done with the 55cc class farm & ranch saws and have friends with bigger Stihl stuff if I need to cut something really big. Weather channel tells me another 6" of new snow last night, -21F wind chill. Still snowing and blowing. GNI
Hey Chris. Just wanted to let you know you have inspired me to get out and cut firewood again after a 2 year hiatus. Have a Woodstove and ran out of a free source of wood to cut but have secured a new spot. Also bought my first 50 cc saw, not as powerful as yours but I feel it's good enough for my use. Thanks again!!
Great video! We moved from DC to a wooded 2 acre lot in VA 6 years ago and I bought a 450 Rancher. It has not been feeling sufficient for dealing with 18+ inch diameter oak, beech, hickory and tuliptree that seem to come down every year, so I searched here to see if I was being ridiculous. This convinced me to go with a 70cc saw, as I still have a few downed trees that I've been dreading dealing with. Each cut takes 2+ min with the 450 and I need to sharpen the chain with every bar oil refill. If you're interested, I can follow up with how the new saw compares.
I think your comment on bar length and going mid length of the mfg recommended is probably a good starting point, it may pull the longest of the recommended but I find from a performance standpoint it does not pull it well. For the one saw person 70cc is a good choice but glad I do not have just one saw.
Awesome vid that day Chris! Absolutely agree 100% with not going to a box store for a saw! An yes for sure ask the pros at the dealership as they can really narrow down the saw to fit your needs 🔥💯👍. Great video!!! See you soon! Andrew from NB :)
Chris: As a logger, I agree I love the 372 or the 372G with the heated handle bars. Its a great saw, like you said I think I have 3-4 parts saws on the shelf. Great saw, I have a 390xp as well we use for big big wood.
Good video Chris. Something else you should've mentioned is in the 50cc class for example, a commercial grade 550xp will out cut a 455 rancher because xp saws are tuned different and built stronger than a rancher. But other than that good video.
I’ve had 50cc, 60cc, Stihl 044 and now a Stihl 462. I love the auto tune personally and it’s not to heavy. And you right about the 70cc class saws cutting a lot faster. Yeah it’s a little heavier, but done cutting a lot sooner. Great video.
Good info for a lot of folk my self iam in he west up north of te state now the best way to go it’s a 32 inch bar it will save your back I use 661 iam cutting big wood my self
I grew up using a John Deere 50v for everything (echo 452vl) I got a house and a husky 435 cheap. Sold that and got a 346xp I love that saw. Then my father gave me his low hour ms290. I hardly use that except to back up the 346 and the occasional larger log it does have a bit more grunt. Then I added a 20v dewalt top handle. I use that for anything it’s big enough for. Being able to wield it like a ginsu knife makes it faster then its cut speed for limbing. I just picked up a 400c, have a high flow oiler on order and I think it will get a 25”, maybe 28” lightweight bar. Now I just need trees or a woodstove. I have cleaned up a few that fell in my yard, helped friends with the same and with firewood just because it’s fun.
I need one of those! All of those🤣 Love chainsaws and whatever works for you is the best!! I do need a 3120 so I can trim trees from the ground without a ladder🤣👍🏻👍🏻GNI
@@InTheWoodyard Yesterday I was looking at todays forecast both here and up north towards Kenny with very similar conditions, here they called it winter storm warnings up north they called it snow.
Great video. I get along good with my 34cc to 50cc saws. For what I do. I don’t get big wood normally. Had a white birch that was blown down and it was about 22”. Got along fine with a 16” bar. My main trouble with my chainsaws is, they all leak bar oil, while not being used. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Have a great day 👍🏻👋
@@noelstractors-firewood57 and which side you lay it on depends on what is actually leaking be it the oil pump right side or the caps themselves left side.😉
Went with 550XP. Highly recommended. Does everything I need. Plenty of power and rips. It's heavy vs 261, but still lightweight being a 50cc. The 562 mkI had issues when researching so went 50cc. Plan to eventually get a 572/592, but can't justify other than I like chainsaws/power.
Got 2 saws. Stihl because they're supported here. Husky makes great saws. Got a 261CM and a 462. Love the 261 as a general purpose saw. The 462 gets used for milling. With a 36" I can cut up to 31" wide. It works because the wood here isn't super hard. Outside of that i only use the 462 for trees/logs over 20" diameter because it's so much faster than cutting from sides with the 261. I would love to a smaller saw for limbing, especially so my wife can help with that. Another 261 or maybe a 361 for when a friend without a decent saw is helping. And a 661 or 881 for milling so i can go wider than the 462 will allow.
I use a Husky 55 Rancher for years burn 7-10 cords a year. I now use that for limbing and I have a Stihl 461 for wood about 12 inches and bigger. It’s quicker, but heavier. I have cut 36” wood with the husky just takes longer.
Do you have a top handle saw? I have an echo cs 355t and I love it. It's so light and I can use it with 1 hand. It's 36 cc and I have a 12 inch bar on it. It's rated for up to 16 inch bar. I cut everything up to 10 inches with it. And I have an echo cs 620 pw for bigger things. I usually have a 20 inch bar on it but put on a 24 for bigger stuff. It's 60 cc and works well for me. I sell about 150 ricks a year.
I'm more of a lager than a logger . . . My neighbour bought of of those saws with the big bar to make a mill from. When he brought it over to show me it he showed off and just cut through my stack of poles in one pass.
Oh, my heart...A Titan bed, full of Huskies - what? No STIHLS!! LOL! Maybe do a video to explain why you are loving the Huskies and have no STIHLS. Don't worry...I'll get over it. :L)) LOL! Have a nice weekend Chris!
I use a 50cc saw for pretty much everything. I'm not in a hurry and like the lightness of the smaler saw. For the occasional bigger stuff I'll get a 70cc saw, simply because i cant justify the purchase of a bigger saw.
Another thing to not with the second and even forst elctric saws you showed is for someone whos just using it a few times a year you dont have to worry about making a gallon of mix fuel not using it and then it goes to waste
I’m looking at getting a bigger saw I currently have a 16” echo with I use for trimming linbs around the house and cut a few tree on my hunting property. But I wanna get something a little more powerful but I’m kinda on a budget and. I’m not an expert I just need something to cut wood for my house and a few family members. I leaning towards a 20” 50cc echo priced around 370$ and a 24” 59cc echo 460$ my question is it worth the extra 100 buck for 9 more cc’s ?
That is your opinion. I say bigger is better IF you can afford it AND handle it. Bigger saws cut faster saving time which is the most valuable thing we all have. TIME!
@InTheWoodyard I agree but in my world it's often straight dollars and cents. I'm ready to pose the question if it would be better for the occasional guy(or even rarely) to buy a lower cost saw and port it or a bigger up front saw.
But naw Chris I got a 1980 stihl 028 47CC wood boss chain saw gonna buy a 20” bar and chain but it’s a old saw but still has compression good compression at that for a old saw
You got that right when you got the money spend it well but I’m use to rebuilding old chain saws I love fixing them and doing other odds and ends to them plus some of the old schools last longer as well but been paid off doing fixing old saws tho
A stihl 660 some days, some days a husky 450. But usually echo 620 😂 seems to be best fuel mileage for amount of wood cut. The log/tree size x temperature outside ÷ by existing back pain, + time of day, - beer30... 😂😂😂 24inch 59cc saw. 99% of the time😂😂
The right saw is what ever feel right at the time, at almost 72 years out I will grab a lighter saw to use
Yup, a lighter saw lets you work longer!
@@InTheWoodyard and can sometimes be double edged sword as the lighter saw usually requires working longer to finish the task.🤔

Hey Chris, really like your videos. I have a small firewood business. I have a Echo 590 TimberWolf with a 24" bar. Runs like a champ. Thanks for the chainsaw education.
so after this video will you now be upgrading your next saw?
Sounds great! Try a 70cc saw for a day...you will see the light!
yup, I hope so!
Have the Echo 590 Got a 592 xp and it cuts 5x faster.
For what i am doing right now, the 590 is good. @@jpfist707
This is a great video. I'm in the market for a bigger saw, I just need to sell about a thousand face cords of wood first since people around here sell it so cheap that I can't get enough to make it worth selling wood. Good night Irene
You can do it! A bigger saw will help you make more wood faster!
572XPG is about a grand or so, yes you need to get money for your firewood. I would give $5 per facecord if you will deliver.🤪
All nice saws!
Love my 572 Husky but my 592 is a beast that you just can't choke down on a big log.
Then there is my little fun Mac 10/10.
I just love the sound of it. The Huskys will leave your ears ringing without protection!
Yup, I always wear plugs AND muffs when I cut with all saws! What did you say??? Haaaa!
Great video on size coverage. Caliber for carrying handguns are just as diverse!!
Yup, more is the right number!
I’ve got a battery powered 80 volt greenworks 16 inch saw. I’ve cut 12 cords with it so far, and felled multiple 25 inch Douglas Fir. Works amazing, and it’s one that I highly recommend!
Nice one!!!
I recently purchased a MS291 with a 20 inch bar 55cc It is really a nice saw to use I also use my MS170 for limbing Keep up the great work!!!
Very nice!
Ive ran two 455 ranchers for like 20 years. Great home saw. Id like to get a 462 stihl. Great Husqvarna lineup. Great explanation on the saw sizes
Thanks. Get a 70cc saw and see the light.
I picked a Holtzforma 372 with a 20" bar. It's doing pretty good so far. I had Scheib over and he taught me how to sharpen a chain and it made a huge difference.
Nice size saw.
Yup...70cc saws are sooooo much faster and powerful it is not even funny!
Great Video. My favourite brands are HUSQVARNA and Jonsered. I'd never buy something else. My grandpa cut over 55 years with those brands.
Good choice! But Stihl make great saws too, try one out some time!
GNI
Thanks 👍 Yup, weather is happening...again!
Awesome, get cuttin'!
Thanks for the video.
You are welcome!
went to use my 6 inch battery saw ..an its cold in the barn i got one cut from it...had to put the battery on charge ...you cant beat gas yet
Yup, batteries need attention!
Still running my 576 going to buy a 572 soon my son just bought a 562 to go with his 372. Good video
Thanks!
Great to get a bigger saw...you will be mad you did not do it sooner! Let me know how it goes! Thanks!
I think your comment on bar length and going mid length of the mfg recommended is probably a good starting point, it may pull the longest of the recommended but I find from a performance standpoint it does not pull it well. For the one saw person 70cc is a good choice but glad I do not have just one saw.
Yup, more saws is the right number!!!
Awesome vid that day Chris! Absolutely agree 100% with not going to a box store for a saw! An yes for sure ask the pros at the dealership as they can really narrow down the saw to fit your needs 🔥💯👍. Great video!!! See you soon! Andrew from NB :)
Well said!
Chris: As a logger, I agree I love the 372 or the 372G with the heated handle bars. Its a great saw, like you said I think I have 3-4 parts saws on the shelf. Great saw, I have a 390xp as well we use for big big wood.
Right on!!!
Good video Chris. Something else you should've mentioned is in the 50cc class for example, a commercial grade 550xp will out cut a 455 rancher because xp saws are tuned different and built stronger than a rancher. But other than that good video.
Yup, good point!
For the Stihl fans a similar example would be 250 vs the 261, often times the Pro saw is lighter as well because of aluminum and magnesium vs plastic.
Yup!!!!! 70 cc is the sweet spot!
The last time i priced a 880/881 it was between $2400-2600 n that was depending on bar size the customer wanted
Yup, that sounds right the Husqvarna 3120 is about $2000
Good info for a lot of folk my self iam in he west up north of te state now the best way to go it’s a 32 inch bar it will save your back I use 661 iam cutting big wood my self
Nice saw and nice size!
🤘I’m loving the 562xp. But the 572 is tempting
Just get one, you will like it!
Husqvarna 395xp been my weapon of choice for years love it so much i brought a few more and 288xp not to bad too!!..
That is a man size saw!! Nice!!!
Yup, it is a lot of fun and great exercise!
I need one of those! All of those🤣 Love chainsaws and whatever works for you is the best!! I do need a 3120 so I can trim trees from the ground without a ladder🤣👍🏻👍🏻GNI
Right on! Good idea!
yeah I remember the ash tree video. I had Covid while I was watching it.
Thanks for watching!
great video. looks like were going to get a lot of snow as we are currently under a blizzard warning.
Yup, more weather!
@@InTheWoodyard Yesterday I was looking at todays forecast both here and up north towards Kenny with very similar conditions, here they called it winter storm warnings up north they called it snow.
Yep I ran a 455 for a while. Had a neighbor let me use his 372 and my world changed. Lovin my 572xp with the 24” light bar 👍. Working on gettin a 592!
Yup, I am glad you saw the light!
G’morning Chris ! Husq 450 - 18”. Stihl 170 - 14”. Echo 7310 - 24”. My Echo runs much gooder than when you “saw” it. Nice action. GoodNightIrene
I just got a new 7310 and it's a nice running saw. I like it so far.
@@NeighborlyHomestead They are great saws. Pretty rich from the factory, but it will break in
Very nice! Yup, that is a great size saw!
Great video. I get along good with my 34cc to 50cc saws. For what I do. I don’t get big wood normally. Had a white birch that was blown down and it was about 22”. Got along fine with a 16” bar. My main trouble with my chainsaws is, they all leak bar oil, while not being used. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Have a great day 👍🏻👋
Lay your saw on its side while storing, and that will help with the bar oil seeping...👍
@@waynetharp Thanks. I’ll try that. 👍🏻
@@noelstractors-firewood57 and which side you lay it on depends on what is actually leaking be it the oil pump right side or the caps themselves left side.😉
@@iffykidmn8170 ya. The oil caps don’t leak. So I’ll lay them oil cap down. Thanks for your reply. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
Try a 70 cc saw some day. You will like it!
I'm using Stihl ms211 baby saw for firewood preparation🙂
Nice one for all day work!
I feel like the right size saw all depends on what you're doing. Never hurts to have more than 1 tool for the job
Yup, good point!
Try a bigger saw, you will like the power and cut speed... more wood faster.
Yup, the right number of saw to have is ...more.
That was a really good vedio that will help alot of people out. 👍
Glad you think so!
maybe you can demonstrate the old 2 man crosscut saw. any decent size powersaw sure beats the 2 man, i did alot of two 2 man especialy by yourself.
Maybe some day I will.
I use a Husky 55 Rancher for years burn 7-10 cords a year. I now use that for limbing and I have a Stihl 461 for wood about 12 inches and bigger. It’s quicker, but heavier. I have cut 36” wood with the husky just takes longer.
Yup, bigger saws cut faster! Keep at it!
I have a 14in bar on my cs355t. I had it over by the shop to sharpen chain may be why he didn't have it out there
I have 3 Top Handle saws, and The makita 18V Top hande Which are My most used saws, I can switch hands depending on what I am cutting on.
Yup, I had a new 540 top handle for a while and Bert has an echo top handle too, it is a very nice saw.
I'm more of a lager than a logger . . . My neighbour bought of of those saws with the big bar to make a mill from. When he brought it over to show me it he showed off and just cut through my stack of poles in one pass.
Sounds like fun!
Oh, my heart...A Titan bed, full of Huskies - what? No STIHLS!! LOL! Maybe do a video to explain why you are loving the Huskies and have no STIHLS. Don't worry...I'll get over it. :L)) LOL! Have a nice weekend Chris!
Tundra! I am lusting after a Stihl saw right now....soon!
My 51 was there just may have been in the shop since it needed a sharpening job. That would have given you a 50cc class saw.
Yup, I also have a 55 at my studio that I forgot about too!
@@InTheWoodyard so what was the excuse old age or to many saws?🤪
Currently running the 565xp with a 24inch bar ,
nice size saw!
If I could only own 3 saws. Echo 2511t, Stihl 400c and 661.
Good line up!
What do you think of the 3 series? 372, 395?
Great saws. A lot of professional loggers run 372 Husqvarnas...because they work. My brother has both. Great saws!
I use a 50cc saw for pretty much everything. I'm not in a hurry and like the lightness of the smaler saw. For the occasional bigger stuff I'll get a 70cc saw, simply because i cant justify the purchase of a bigger saw.
Thanks for the input!
I'm a 70cc fan myself...does it all 🔥
Yup!!!
I remembered that day you used the big bar Chainsaw…😊
Yup, it is a beast!
Like about 60-70cc saw. Stihls.
Yup, good saws!
Another thing to not with the second and even forst elctric saws you showed is for someone whos just using it a few times a year you dont have to worry about making a gallon of mix fuel not using it and then it goes to waste
Yup, good point!
I love to hear the thumping torque of my 661.
Yup, I have ran a few of them....AWESOME saws!
We have a husky 455 and a husky 350 they work perfect to heat our home
Yup, good all around saws.
My take is whatever you feel comfortable running go for it. 😉👍
Fair enough! Very good point my good man!
You will be glad you had the bigger saw, more power is better.
Good vid idea. I see a lot of people spending way to much $$$$ on way more saw than theyll ever need.
I have 3 saws 261-400 and the 661
Very nice size range!
But naw Chris I got a 1980 stihl 028 47CC wood boss chain saw gonna buy a 20” bar and chain but it’s a old saw but still has compression good compression at that for a old saw
Try a 70cc or a 90cc saw some time you will be born again!
You got that right when you got the money spend it well but I’m use to rebuilding old chain saws I love fixing them and doing other odds and ends to them plus some of the old schools last longer as well but been paid off doing fixing old saws tho
what camera do you use for your vidoes? Thank you
Gopros and now dji
I like the 70cc - 80cc with a 28 inch. I can buck with one saw with out bending over.
Yup, good choice!
@InTheWoodyard i was told, not bending over is a big deal especially when you get older.
What was the song called at the start of the video? lol.
It is listed under the description on all videos.
99% of the time😂😂
Right on, a SHARP 60-70cc saw is my favorite!
Thanks Chris.. Nice review..
Your Camera Lens has "Creep" ?? It very S,l,o,o,o,w,l,y Zooms in. You can see every cut you made during editing LOL
Yup, I did that in the edit. It is proven to keep people watching longer and is more interesting.
@@InTheWoodyard Hmmm.. ?? ok..
I say get the biggest saw you can handle and that you can afford. Rather have it too big than too small..(that's what she said).
yup!!!
Everytime I see that 6 foot monstrosity I smile and remember you and Ken on your Dad's big Ash tree!!! What a beast of a tree and Powersaw!!
Yup, we will use it again some day!
How much
how much what???
I just found myself watching. Wanting to see that big saw going through a tree!
It is on a few other videos from last March.
