- In this episode, I undertake my final sail of the season. Unfortunately I need to return to work in order to fund the next set of adventures, so I sail Safar to La Lina, Acaidesa where she'll be later hauled ashore and laid up for a short winter spell.
I have just created some social media accounts for Safar, so please be sure to check them out if you'd like to stay upto date. - Bonus episode with Boat Tour and Haul out footage coming your way soon!

Very nice film,
About the spinnacker. Id get a block of the ”one way type” used for main sheets in dinghies and place that by the lifeline pole’s in front of the cockpit. Teh sheet runs from the horn to your block at the aft and then front to the new block and back to the winch. This will give you the following advantages.
1. If you need to give or loosen the sheet from the winch you will be able to hold it by hand. With some wind that would be impossible with your current setup.
2. The sheet will aproach the winch from the front.
3. You will be able to take the leeward spinnacker sheet with you up on the roof and play it from there. I know its not a racer but in lighter winds that can give you extra speed and some things to do.
Looking forward to coming episodes.
Thanks for Stefande and glad you’re enjoying the videos. I’ll certainly have a look into your recommendations and I’m near a good Chandlery now so hopefully I’ll be able to pick up the ratchet blocks easily. I’m all for making Safar more efficient, safer and of course faster 😁
I am enjoying your adventure! I'd think very seriously about replacing the shackles on the anchor with ones that you can put a seizing wire on the pin. When I saw what you have going there it gave it gave me the chills. Loving the drone shots! You have beautiful boat.
Thanks Scott! Glad you’re enjoying the journey so far and I’m excited to start sailing and filming again in January!
I’m planning on changing the anchor chain set up when I get back out to the boat as it’s obviously not ideal at the moment 😅
Brilliant video, that work thing really is a bore! Shame it will get in the way of us watching you on You Tube. Made John and I laugh at this one xx
Glad you guys enjoyed this one, It was perhaps a little more sailing technical than I wanted it to be 😅 But lots of adventures to come in 2023!
See you in January!
The job calling - I know that feeling so well...! ☹😭
It never gets easier does it?! Knowing that 2023 Adventures are just around the corner certainly helps though!
you can use a thin string on the head of the chekel it will prevent it from coming loose, fishermen use it for their tackle. thanks for good videos. day sailers from Denmark
Thanks for the tip Kurt! I’ll try it when I get back to Safar! Glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Another great video, thanks for sharing it with us! Enjoyed seeing the setup & problem solving. Those shackles working lloose is a bit of a wake-up call!! Good spot!
Drone shots are getting really smooth and interesting.
Look forward to seeing you back in early in the new year
Thanks Guy! I was very surprised to see the shackle loose myself and I'll certainly be checking it regularly now! Glad you enjoyed the drone shots! I feel like I'm getting the hang of it now! It was hard to trim so much of it out of the video 😅
Another great video and thanks for posting but dont know what I am going to watch now on a Sunday and you now have two followers on fb. Hopefully you have a good few months back in reality and look forward to your return to Safar. 😀
Thanks Alan! Apologies for interrupting the Sunday routine 😅 But I'll make sure the 2023 adventures are better than ever! I've managed to save some unseen footage and have a boat tour video which I'll release to keep the channel ticking while I'm away!
Captain Morgan !!
Thanks for yet another great video. I really appreciate when you describe your hardware setup and methods. That’s how we learn from each other’s 🤓⚓️👍🏼
Glad you found some value in this one! I'm trying to find a good balance between sharing information and ensuring that it's easy and enjoyable to watch 😅
Beautiful boat, indeed… absolutely gorgeous.
You're right...that is what it is all about. Magical !! Again a great episode, thanks. Look forward to catching up again in the new year.
Thanks for all your support Paul! very much appreciated.
Great episode mate , bummer about the work interruption to your sailing, have been enjoying your videos look forward to next time Safar sails cheers from Australia.
Thanks John! Hopefully some big adventures to come! Really enjoying putting the videos together so hopefully I'll be able to keep you entertained throughout 2023!
Well you really cracked the drone shots, beautiful boat and well edited. Most impressed by the way you manage to video so much of the action on board. I need to get some more camera mounts so that I can attempt to keep up with you. A very enjoyable video. I loved the commercial text additions, one gave me a big laugh, I guess you know which one 😀 Are you going to keep up with us once you're back in the U.k.? If you're ever up in Derbyshire, it would be great to meet up. Take care .. Dave
Thanks Dave! If I'm honest, I just use one clamp mount with my GoPro, so I'm regularly wondering around the decks placing it in a new spot! but at least I'm keeping my steps up while at sea! Glad you enjoyed the text editions, thought I'd try to lighten the mood on what seemed like a more technical episode. I have some bonus footage to release next month and I'll certainly let you know if I'm in your area! Looking forward to following your adventures, Morgan
Hello from Los Angeles!!
Great videos and awesome spinnaker drone shots.
I am thinking of adding a spinnaker type sail to my boat but was not sure how to attach it to the bow, so thanks for showing us your setup!
By the way I noticed that you had an anchor swivel attached to your chain which was a couple of feet before the actual anchor. You may think of attaching it directly to your anchor and then you would eliminate your shackle loosening problem.
All the best Richard
Hi Richard, Thanks for the tip on the chain, Safar came with the swivel strop and I've just maintained it! But I'll give removing it a go next time I'm onboard. I really like my current spinnaker set up. If you need any more information or pictures of my bowsprit do let me know and I can send them through.
Harken Reflex Furler will make hoisting and retrieving the Spinnaker or other sails a breeze. Yuit can use it on many sails.
Very good 👍
Shame we have an imposed break, but enjoying your channel and good luck with the lift out etc.
Appreciate that Richard! 2023 Adventures are just around the corner!
Another great video. I hope you get back soon.
Appreciate that!! Hopefully some big 2023 Adventures just around the corner!
Oh mate! I feel your End of Season pain 😢. Anyway another really enjoyable and informative video - nice one and Thanks👏👏👏Let us know how you find your winter layup yard choice👋
It definitely felt like a betrayal to Safar when she came out of the water yesterday and I said my goodbyes to her for a couple months. I have some bonus footage of the haul out which hopefully I'll release next month to keep the channel remembered 😅 What are you plans with Mandala? She looks incredible!!
@@sailingsafar Hi and Thankyou! Leaving the boat is hard work and sad at the same time isn’t it? We have to take our sailing hit in one lump the way our work is, so it’s a long winter wait 😳 it does mean that the dream is always there in the back of your mind and keeps us going through the Uk winter 👍😎.We are keeping Mandala in N Germany for now. We went up the east coast of Sweden a bit last summer and loved it. Looking forward to exploring the west coast and Norway with luck next time. Safe return to work and looking forward to your videos next stint.
Your joy of sailing is so infectious and obvious - real feel good stuff 👏👏👏👏thanks
I've seen captain's,stewardesses and deck hands making videos about yacht life will you be doing the same thing? Hope you will, Awesome video 👍🏿👍🏿
Unfortunately there are some very strict NDA's in place 🥲 But I have some unseen footage and a boat tour which I'm hoping will keep the channel curent for a couple of months!
Enjoying and learning from your solo passages under sail. Suggest when you are entering marinas, do not speed up the film, allow viewers to see the approach to the marina and then the actual docking process and sort of general atmosphere of each place.
Really pleased you’re enjoying the videos, I’ll add some docking into one of the next videos and perhaps do little montage of what I do and why, I generally speed it up because the episode length would be too long 😅
Great drone shots! What drone do you have and how do you recover when singlehanded? Does it have legs? I’ve got a DJI mini 3 but I’m not sure how easy it will be to recover safely!
Hi Derek, Glad you enjoyed the drone shots! It was certainly my highlight of the video! I use a DJI Mavic Pro, which I think is the next size up from the mini. So when the swell is low, recovery is fairly easy, I normally bring the drone in parallel to Safar and match the boat speed, then I slowly crab the drone in amidships on the windward side and then as soon as it's in reach I scoop up the drone with one hand from underneath by grabbing the body and then flip it upside down, which automatically kills the motors. Doing it in large swell is significantly harder 😅
Thank you for sharing. I am not familiar with the phrase 'flying under colours'. What do you actually mean by saying it in your context?.
To be honest, it doesn’t really have a purpose thinking about it 🤔 When I started sailing in the North of England, it was a very slang term: White sails being your Main, Jib, Genoa etc and your colour sails were your spinnakers.
I guess “flying under a colours” was basically me just saying “sailing with the spinnaker” but jazzing it up a little 😬
@@sailingsafar O ok. I was thinking too much into British traditions. Colours refer to flags or pennants. Returning to port with 'flying colours' signify victorious return. I have no clue of 'flying under colours', though it did crossed my mind that you might have meant sailing with much reduced sail area as 'under colours', i.e. under or not full sails.
Nice job! now get back to work😂 and earn some pennies for a code sail👍
Use 5 mm sheets.😃
