The base taught me that most huge bosses in a huge arena that cover large distances or hit from miles away are much more enjoyable to fight in range, than melee. But not max range cause they outrange most of what you have that's fast enough, rather the sweet spot being mid-range (kinda like with Astel). Far enough to see what's happening and not screw up your camera, and from their "get off me" move most seem to have now, lol, yet close enough to still be able to keep pressure on them. If I were to use a mostly melee build I'd prolly still keep handy a bunch of pots & throwing daggers just to keep poking them in the air if I can, or a bow/crossbow for swapping with some rott/poison ammo or something, hehe, cause that poison seemed to be putting in some work( that regular one or some advanced poison from the DLC btw?)
In doing so, I feel like you, the player, gains agency again over the fight. No longer must you just attack only when the boss decides to be generous & stay close enough, so it kinda evens out the playing field in that sense.

Yes I agree, great point. Playing as 100% melee has definitely given me some challenges both in the base game and in the DLC. The big bosses, with big arenas, usually make me run more than fight lol. Especially when I play without a summon to share the aggro with.
The poison is a regular poison infusion from the base game.
The poison damage in itself is not great, but it will easily apply on enemies and lasts very long. So because of my talisman, I will have a damage buff for the majority of the fight! ;)
