    Dolphins are one of the smartest animal species on Earth. In fact, their encephalization quotient (their brain size compared to the average for their body size) is second only to humans. But exactly how smart are they? Lori Marino details some incredible facts about dolphins.

      They also have "spindle neurons", which are specialised for the processing of emotion and social abilities. What is even more interesting is that they have three times as many of these neurons as humans do, even when accounting for the fact their brains are larger than ours. We can infer that their cognitive abilities for emotion may even surpass ours.

Just knowing that means that Dolphins could be signigicantly smarter than us, but we would have no way of knowing. Open your mind a bit homie.

      I think dolphins are probably more consistently intelligent than humans. Dolphins do not have geniuses, but they do not have idiots either.
      My theory is that humans only have geniuses because we have hands and thumbs, and have mastered tool use, and thus can study things more thoroughly. We also have idiots whom have piggybacked on those geniuses. Dolphins do not have idiots, because they could not survive, and were possibly outcasted before they reached maturity.

      Seems more likely that because the maximum intelligence of a dolphin is (as said above) about that of a three-year-old, there is much less of a range in intelligence. Not to mention the importance teaching plays in human intelligence, essentially expanding the range multifold.

    fun fact:
    alongside humans, dolphins are one of the few species that will kill for fun
    there have been accounts of porpoise carcasses having signs of dolphin aggression, these porpoises were killed by dolphins, they werent killed for meat since dolphins dont eat them, they werent killed for territorial reasons since dolphins would often follow porpoises way outside of their territory, and they didnt kill them out of competition either, since they dont hunt the same prey
    the conclusion is that dolphins think murder is fucking hilarious

They almost show the same callousness that most humans do. And will gladly kill things for such astounding reasons as, they want to know what a creature looks like on the inside. @@imaginarychip4916 First of all, I have to say that my comment was focused on the use of dolphins in captive situations, as in my reference to the Whale Sanctuary Project, led by Dr. Lori Marino. And like her, I mainly speak from a North American context, where mainly sharks eat dolphins - unlike humans.
      You might address your concerns by contacting Only One on the internet. This is a reputable organization led by very famous people. It's not a secretive conspiracy making claims without evidence. I support their campaigns about driftnets, and the ocean agenda petition.
      My question to you is, WHICH humans, and why? Can you be more specific? I don't know which country you're in, or what you call "rich."
      Globally, most people contribute to dolphin death - either as bycatch or by habitat destruction - by eating fish, much of which is imported from poorer countries. Should we suspend all fishing? Maybe we should! What do you think?
      Some poor fishermen hate dolphins because dolphins eat fish and prevent them from earning a better living. And dolphins are easy to kill.
      The solutions are not so easy to agree upon, because different humans are affected in different ways.
      Oh and by the way, whale meat and fish products have often been included in dog food. I wonder whether dolphin meat is.
      So...I need you to provide more information before I can support your comment, which does not really fit with the research I read.

    Just finished my part time job at a place that literally took care of injured dolphin. It's turned out that dolphins are extremely sensitive creatures. They were able to tell people apart and bond differently with everyone. They could chose who are their favorites and who they just don't like. They smart enough to test boundaries with new people to get to know them better, by splashing water at them and sometimes giving playful bites. But be careful when they showed some defensive attitude. Sure they could bond with people, but like I said, they are sensitive, so some errors people make can make them slightly angry and decided to simply ignore people or in some more serious case head-butting people...

All of these animals understand when they are going to die and feel an extreme amount of dread, fear and terror before it happens. • @davidgreen5994
      @davidgreen5994 7 років тому +12

      +Isidora Flores Is easy to say, but hard to do it. Nature doesn't work that why. The code remains the same: ''The survial of the fittest.'' The fatc that we can apreciate and protect species that are particulary inteligent is just an act of empathy and merchy, nothing more. We can stop eating those species simply because there are others we can eat. And we need to eat animals. Not only for our survial, but for keeping the balance in mother nature. Humans are the main predators in the food chain. If we would stop eating other species, that would turn the natural balance upside down... many of those would breed without control, they would get very numerous and that would damage or even destroy the nature. But before that it would make life extremly difficult and make many humans and animals starve to death. There are only two ways in which we can see most of the animals: food or natural enemies...
      Why do so many humans forget that just as any other animals, we are part of the nature too.

    Something to keep in mind with our understanding of animal intelligence is that the way in which animals express or make evident their intelligence we as humans can not perceive without the aid of technology. Dolphins and their communication through sonar is one such example. Without technological aid, we humans would not be able to know these wonderful creatures are interacting with and communicating with complex language, with language being one of the defining characteristics of human intelligence, this is a massive piece of evidence that humans are nearly on par with human intelligence. Another such example is Elephants and their ability to communicate by making vibrations in the ground that other elephants then perceive with their feet. Elephants are another example of an extremely intelligent, social, empathetic animal who's capacity for intelligence we as humans were physically incapable of perceiving. The point in saying all this is that it is with almost 100% certainty that all these animals have additional behaviors and expressions proving their intelligence as similar and even equivalent to our own, but in ways current technology can not yet ascertain. Animals are far more conscious and intelligent than our species ever has acknowledged before, and i hope to see the day where mammals are given similar rights that humans have.

When traveling on the ocean & we get caught in a storm they call on them to lead them to a nearest island for shelter & wait out the storm. Each families has a particular sea animal they can communicate with like turtles, rays, whales & sharks just to name a few. Unfortunately more & more of us today like myself have dropped our island life in search for the “American dream” & i believe its killing us. Many of us move out of the islands & end up coming back in a coffin because of broken hearts, homesick & the cold weather in which we are not used to.

    We humans have such a great ego. We say an animal is intelligent by comparing it to us putting our way to be on top of the other's.

      that's because we're the only animals that use reason and logic to solve simple equation. you don't see an elephant studying in the field of astronomy do you?

      +Bill Nye the Science Guy how do you know that? you dont think to some other animals we look stupid? killing each other, destroying our own habitat and food supply. We are weak, with poor eye sight, slow swimmers, we cant fly.
      What would aliens capable of faster than light travel, think of us? you think we are better because we can make shiny phones that we love partially because they are shiny? Because we like wearing shiny rocks that we spends hundreds on? We like pretty lights like a moth to a flame?

      Bill Nye the Science Guy Try to solve puzzels like a raven or memorize like an elephant or even try to unlock doors like orangutans, you wouldnt be able and these are any elephant, orangutan or raven that you pick. On the other hand pick any human from a crownd and ask him/her elementary school questions and be amazed with his knowlegde....

      +Stupidity Exodus no I think we're better because, again, we are the only animals that use reason and logic to solve simple equation. Animals can't comprehend the thought of other animals being stupid. if we aren't better than other animals how come we're at the top of the food chain and we can cage animals in zoos. we can't swim well, fly, or run fast but we can develop machines and equipment to let us do so, unlike any other animal. so again, humans populate New York, not elephants

      @billnyethescienceguy3451 7 років тому +39

      +Pablo Limo ok but ask that Raven, elephant, or orangutan the same elementary school question and be amazed at how they don't even know that youre speaking to them. I'm pretty sure you can train a human how to pick a lock and solve a puzzle too. some people are just born with better memories than others

    I worked at Marineland where they have a few dolphins, and i remember them watching me and my friends during orientation(I worked in the restaurant and had no aquatic training Knowledge). I remember using basic body language to communicate with them and I actually ended up getting the dolphins to splash my friends and got everyone soaked! Very smart creatures!

    It'd be nice to find a documentary that takes multiple dimensions into account like:
    1) Does the animal pass the mirror test
    2) Encephalization quotiont
    3) Do they mourn their dead?
    4) Societal structure (sociable or solo player, if sociable is it a regular hierarchy?)
    and use those to categorize animals and find similarities/patterns in general - we have so much to learn from animals and bake that knowledge into our tech.
