- George Duke, Jazz Icon, versatile musician past away at age 67. He was one of my favorites on the keyboards. He released his last work entitled Dream Weaver earlier this year. Great music as is all of George Dukes work. Peace 2 All
And we may not forget the legendary bass player Louis Johnson. He unfortunately is no longer among us. RIP Louis, too.
reminds me of bros johnsons stomp similar, wot a gud bunch of musicians not just keys like 2days artists preprogrammed synths, as gud as sum of 2days tunes are this is orig classic dance, oh i want my teen youth backkk, luv u mr duke, ps u shuda been made a king not a duke, u was a king rest
That video should be kept safely in a museum 👍
All Star band,RIP Robert Brookins,Louis and George 🙏🏽
An unbelievable talent.
funk-o-meter shows 110 % 👍
Paul Jackson sound on the guitar is always clean. This guy took the rhythmic guitar to another level in the 1980s.
Yep!! See this: ua-cam.com/video/2g37NtzmTsY/v-deo.html
We
Couldn’t agree more. He has the perfect balance of moving the beat forward, keeping tight with the bass, and throws in tasteful licks when appropriate.
Man, that was easy money for him with MJ and other Quincy productions. When you're that good, it comes easy.
I saw the clavitar clip on a meme page.
I am now accidentally a George Duke fan. This man and band are just outrageous. I’m ashamed I haven’t heard of him before.
Check out the stuff he did with Frank Zappa on albums like The Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka, One Size Fits All, and Over-Nite Sensation. Just two absolutely titanic virtuosi with completely different musical backgrounds coming together and making absolute magic happen. Seriously how they're not mentioned alongside Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Jaco Pastorius, and the other legends of jazz fusion will forever elude me.
@@tjenadonn6158 wow thanks! I certainly will! Hopefully I’ll remember to let you know what I thought :)
@@tjenadonn6158 I haven’t forgotten!! Life has been strange lately. I’m listening to him with Zappa as we speak. Genius so far.
If you're into Fusion, you have to check out his stuff from the 70's. Mr. McFreeze, Vulcan Mind Probe, or really anything off his Solo Keyboard Album is great stuff. And dig into his MPS era stuff. The title track off "Faces In Reflection" is one of my favorites. There are several other albums that are great from that time frame.
As Tjena Donn indicated, his stuff with Zappa is legendary. Look for live versions of Big Swifty with him on it. His soloing is phenomenal! That and the Live at the Roxy stuff is must see George.
@@tjenadonn6158 Absolutely right. George was possibly the most versatile, imaginative and almost certainly FUN of all of them. The others you mention are probably considered more "serious" artists, but George could be as serious as any of them!
This is a live in Japan. I went to see the concert because I was attracted to the combination of Louis Johnson and George Duke.
But Paul Jackson and Steve Ferrone! I didn't understand at that time. I want to go back to those days.
I laughed when I first saw that clavinet with a tremolo arm.
The back vocals wonderful
Their voices were beautiful. Later on in the show they did "Shine" so good that I just can't go back to the album version.

He was a keyboardist of a generation that has and has not of yet reached his level of expertise on these instruments some of which he designed himself former child prodigy Master-Mr. George Duke. May he all ways be remembered in Life & the history of music.

The key getting stuck at 5:48 sucks....but he pressed on through! True professional.
Life of a clavinet!!!!! It always happens on a clavinet, well a maintain one will do that less but yes he keeps moving forward and still kills it! Go George!!!
He played it off so well that I didn't even notice it got stuck

It’s the ROLL CALL FAH MEEEE!!! Showcasing the musicians!!! EPIC!
The way he's so present with the crowd is wild, I love that this version is scaled back from the studio version so they can just play for the room. You can just focus on the quality of the songwriting and the dude's chops
Geez, it's not scaled back by much! You'd think this is lip-synced but no - just total pros in every chair.
George Duke lives in his music!
The MASTER OF FUNK!! Miss him tremendously.
My favorite song, especially the chorus part, is the best
An underrated genius Artist in the POP world (well renowned in the Jazz/soul/funk community though ) !
RIP George Duke
Louis the KING of bass
Can you imagine that Frank Zappa had to almost force George to start singing when he was in Zappa's band?
ive so many mems of hearing this geezers voice on my fm radio, greg edwards lyseum in the strand radio shows i used to listen 2, gud times, if it wasnt 4 greg iwudnt know a lot of late 70s early 80s dance bands, tony blackbum & robbie vincent & mr frog (froggyy too)

One of the best music created in the world! He is - yes, absolute icon! Pity he past away only 67. The world lost his future music! Thank you!
It is said that he was saddened by the passing of his wife a year earlier.
Seeing the joy from this man while performing is inspiring. Oh and the rest of the band is great, too!
4:16 is a magic moment
This is amazing sounding for a live recording, sounds like a slick studio production.
Pro tools sucks but it Will for synthesizers sample and sound design
analog rules ! complete analog chain and laserdisc from this era had analog audio track !
The musicians and singers are all VERY seasoned and respected studio musicians. A lot of that quality comes directly from a tight band with great chemistry.
George Duke for president... in Heaven!
This is a crazy band, filled with top-tier studio musicians, the best of their time!! And they play accordingly too, that's some of the tightest live music I've heard.
This is so super-insane good there are no real words for it.

Women were so beautiful back then...I never had the chance to live this era ,first hand, but I'd gladly take the risk and go there If I could. At thirty one years old, I'm so fed up of this so called ''Modern era''.
Makes me smile every time I hear it !

Who's listening on 2019?
why do you ask?
Some stupid questions must be taken as unnecessary - and sorry- but have to assume that they were asked by ignorant people ...
Nulle comme question !
Me,now in 2020 and forever !
2021 and I am :)
According to Wikipedia, "...It was at the young age of 4 that Duke first became interested in the piano. His mother took him to see Duke Ellington in concert and subsequently told him about this experience. "I don't remember it too well," says George, "but my mother told me I went crazy. I ran around saying 'Get me a piano, get me a piano!'"
There is a video where George Duke (RIP) talks about the influence Frank Zappa (RIP) had on him. Duke said something like, "When I first joined the band, I wanted to play my heart out but Frank told me to be happy playing the melody of the song, like everyone else in the band, most of the time. I only wanted to play on an 88-key electric piano but Frank encouraged me to play synthesizer. He also encouraged me to sing back up vocals but I didn't want to be a singer"
I wouldn't know who George Duke was if I were not a fan of "Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention" (AKA The Mothers) George Duke is not Luciano Pavarotti but it's awesome to hear him sing the lead vocals on a song he wrote! Frank Zappa didn't sing like Pavarotti either.
It’s me again / I’m going to get Roderick for my next words I partied during late 70s early 80s to your music George Duke your words won’t you try right to the end can’t let go / to boot you take over in every aspect including your raw god given vocals to humanity… ok!!! Okay in this video you out did all your peers the Marv , Philip b , James ing, Diana , Luther v , etc !!! You get the picture because of moments felt
