About Alcatraz, one guy (can't remember the name) DID escape by swimming all the way to the mainland, but the water was so cold he was hypothermic and passed out on shore where he was easily found and captured.

They say Bumpy Johnson aided in the escape from Alcatraz -It was recorded (I believe by the coastguard) that there was a boat seen anchored in the bay that night, just sitting there for hours with it’s lights off. The story is that they were men sent by Bumpy Johnson, who were sent to wait out in the bay that night, to pick up Frank & his fellow escapees. It wouldn’t have been out of character for Bumpy Johnson to help out a buddy who he had been incarcerated with. Bumpy Johnson was in jail with Frank, but had been released some time before the escape.
Alexander Pierce and his escapees had to resort to cannibalism. only in extremely pure desperation would someone do that. anyway, this series taught me more history than school which is amazing.
another exceptional non violent escape artist is steven jay russell who managed to escape prison on four occasions, he's nickenamed houdini and even has a movie made based on his life (i love you phillip morris)

Great video. Moondine Joe who was Fremantle prison's greatest escapee had some great descendants. Douglas Thomas made several escapes in the late 970s despite having only one leg. Brendan Abbott, The Post Card Bandit. He was taking selfies long before the camera phone. He took them out the front of a police station and then mail the selfie to the police commissioner. He's retired to the old folks' home at Casuarina Correction Centre these days. He had a good run though.
According to a documentary I watched a few years ago a member of the Anglin family supplied a photograph to the FBI that the family recieved in 1992 that supposedly showed the brothers, taken about thirty years after their escape, that forensic analysts confirmed was both the correct age and on film only available before 1995 (the manufacturer went out of business), and facial recognition software gave better than a 95% probability of BOTH the men in the picture being one of the brothers, but analysis of the photo's background, and plants in the picture, concluded it was taken either in southern Brazil or Argentina, and Argentina has no extradition treaties with the USA while Brazil only has a limited treaty.
Can't quite recall which book and/or documentary it was but the things you mention line up with what I remember learning. It's likely due to embarrassment that the F.B.I. insist that they died. After all, multiple people have made the swim from alcatraz to the mainland, just for sh*ts & giggles...
Shiraori was no only a genius escapee, but also a rebel against the harsh Japanese prison conditions. BTW: Seeing the first part of this clip, I have realized it's no wonder that Japanese prison-themed movies from the 1970s and 80s were so focused on brutality, fictionalized as the plots are. Thanks, Simple History.
In 1962 one inmate, John Paul Scott, did successfully escape from Alcatraz by swimming to Fort Point, whereupon he was discovered and captured. He was exhausted and suffering from hypothermia, but survived. Prior to this in 1945 another prisoner, John K. Giles, escaped aboard a ferry while disguised as an Army soldier, but was apprehended at Angel Island.
Another channel, KentoBento made a much more in depth and story driven video about Shiratori, that has many important notes about Shiratori's ingenuity and cunning. Like how while he was digging the tunnel, when the guards were watching he would look upwards, tricking them into thinking he was failing to come up with an escape plan. And about the wire from the bucket being from bathing time and not just some bucket in his cell like this animation shows.
“Tonight is going to be a jailbreak, somewhere in the town! Tonight is going to be a jailbreak, so don’t you be around! Tonight is going to be trouble, I’m going to find myself in! Tonight is going to be trouble, so woman stay with a friend. BREAKOUT!” Thin Lizzy
The original reasons given for the closure of Alcatraz was that in was in poor physical condition, would have cost too much to repair and maintain and that it was not in keeping with modern penal theories. I think it’s most likely that with the escape of Morris and the Anglins, the government had lost its claim to an escape-proof prison and hence the original reason for its existence.
Fun Fact: Moondyne Joe actually was mining and took of his clothes and made it look like he was resting on the pile of rocks and escaped through his own hole that he mined and it was at Fremantle prison in Perth i see his hole all the time
The West Germans escaping was by far the most incredible story. I wish the narrator had mentioned that wall that divided Germany stood until 1989. I was 14 can can remember when the fall was announced on American news. Remember the song 99 Luftballons by Nena? It was about balloons being mistaken for UFOs, the government puts it military on high alert which causes surrounding countries to do the same and war breaks out again, over balloons LOL. This sounds like it could really happen these days.
The last escape with the helicopter always makes me laugh. in interviews with the prison guards, they stated the very first thing that their commander yelled was "LOCK THE GATES" as John Killick flies off in a helicopter from the exercise yard. His girlfriend Lucy also wasn't the pilot, she booked a scenic flight and hijacked it by pulling a gun on the pilot. Honestly one of THEE greatest escapes of all time.
The best prison escape ever made was the Long Kesh in Ireland, 37 IRA prisoners escaped dressed up as prison officers and smuggled in guns. Then simply walked out.
