ETSY SHOP RESERVE | What is it, why it's happened, and how you can fix/prevent it happening.

I'm seeing SO many people complaining of Etsy placing a reserve or hold on their account, so today I wanted to break down WHY this might have happened to you, and how you can (mostly) prevent it happening in future.
This is a new policy that was released in 2021, and lots of people seem to be struggling with it lately.

I totally understand them protecting them selfs and their brand but this is my money that they are making even more money for themselves just by holding it for a list of reasons that are mostly “we do what we want”. The more I get into Etsy the more I’m thinking about just selling on my own website
Etsy is bogus.. we had a customer that opened a case with a question how can i clean my bag.. Etsy steps into the case and refund the person.. why? Just why? Etsy never reviewed it.. just acts on your behalf and charge the card when they feel needed.. while the policy says, we will reach out to buyer.. never happed.. they refunded and the next day i received the mail.. case closed for them..

@@oikit They're review system is now worse than Aliexpress offer their sellers. Its all focused on the buyer. They don't care but why should they.
I've been on Etsy for five years now and Im almost a star seller. Im a five star shop, 100% message response rate, 4.8 to 4.9 average rating, and 90% on time shipping. With that said, they put a reserve on my account the other day for no reason... Im not a new seller, I don't get a large influx of orders. I had zero sales yesterday and a grand total of 11 sales for the week. I also ship with tracking! So Im literally seething right now with anger.
I'm a relatively new seller. I just sold 2 high-priced paintings and they put a hold on me now after the second sale. I provided tracking numbers. I'm pissed!
Just happened to me. I’ve followed all their rules but one item started selling well and then I get punished. I’ll be making my own website seeing I’m the one bringing sales to my Etsy shop. Done with them already.
I know same here! I’ve only been on Etsy for a week and can’t access my own money.
I may as well do the same!
All the policies you're reading are not really why they're holding our money , there's something else going on
Hello Jess, thanks so much for making this video. My Etsy shop has been placed on reserve over the last month and the only thing that I can come up with as to why is that my sales have increase quite a bit over the last couple of months after moving in a new direction as I have been on Etsy since 2011 plus the fact that majority of these sales are coming from overseas and most of the time I cannot offer free postage for the items posted. I have never had a bad review and items are posted within the time frame that I specify. I understand why Etsy have done this but at the same time it is very annoying when the more sales you make the bigger the reserve becomes which means that I am not receiving the money earn to be able to put back into my business. I have sent acouple of messages asking questions to Etsy but unfortunetly each time I receive the same generic letter back.
So frustrating!
Etsy is holding money from sellers because they are having money problems. Did they ever release you money.
in the last 6 months 2 reserves have been placed with NO explanation. They refuse to tell you why they are keeping your money. I've been a seller for almost 10 years and have never had so many problems. It's infuriating. Maybe they're getting tired of small businesses and just want to focus on mass produced Chinese knockoff market?
My tiny little shop has been open since 2019. Not once has this happened and now all of sudden I have 75% of all of my orders in reserve. A minimum over $300! And not one person from Etsy will tell me why. The criteria listed does not apply to my shop. None. All of my orders that are made and mailed - label is bought from Etsy with tracking. Not one email about infringement or Yada Yada. So? Over $300 minimum. Not a deposit since 3/11! They're keeping my money
They don't even have the courtesy to tell you why. No respect for dedicated sellers. It's ridiculous. It's happened twice to me in 5 months. I'm starting to tell clients to work with me directly. It's most likely just some AI algorithm. Good luck to you..
I have had a reserve on my shop cannot find out why they wont tell me why, after many emails they are intransigent. I dont fit into any of the reasons you mention. What is so annoying is that theyve taken their fees and i have free shipping so im still having to pay that!! I only get one order a month and just got an order but found out they were keeping the money. Im really upset and feel like closing my shop. I make dolls house miniatures
I am actually considering after 2022 Christmas I’m going to move my account and shop to my own website I’m not spending a year on reserve
Why would you lump all resellers in the "dodgy resellers" group? Some are working their asses off, finding valuable vintage items, without any intention of scamming anyone.
They are vintage sellers - an allowed category. Resellers in the handmade category are not allowed.
I think resellers should also have a place on Etsy, Etsy wouldnt have been so big if it was not for the resellers.. they bring in more money than handy crafters.. that i am sure of. Now an Etsy store that sells 1000 items a day, do not tell me they still all handmake it.. they automated the process.. how is this store called that sells this puptags.. one of Etsy's biggest sellers !!! I see a lot of automation there😅😅
they don't tell you WHY you have a reserve and don't tell you how to fix it. They also say they CAN'T remove the reserve. no one has the authority to remove them.
I am selling on Etsy for ~4years, with ~700 sales. I always ship my orders on time and I always provide tracking number with all information in English (but European tracking number)
I do not think it is the right way how Etsy treats their sellers. I always treated my customers with care and I always left my buyers with pleasant shopping experience even if it made loss for my business.
I will stop selling on Etsy if they will not remove my shop from reserve.
I opened my shop in mid-April. All of my listings are for items that I have personally made. State that in every listing whether it be my own words in a title or description or when setting up the listing.
I got my first sale in early May then 2 more a couple weeks later. It wasn't until almost mid-June when I got a couple more sales. A week later I got a sale 3 days in a row. Right after that, I got the notice of the reserves.
I have fulfilled and shipped every order on time and with tracking and I have not had any customer complaints or returns. I can only guess that my sudden "jump" in sales is what triggered it. Two days after getting the reserve notice, I got another sale and then the next day I got 2 sales in one day (the first time for me). I can only assume that Etsy will continue to see that my sales are increasing sharply, given the recent activity.
I will keep doing what I've been doing, i.e. fulfilling orders on time and shipping with tracking, and see if Etsy removes the reserves at some point or if it will be something I have to deal with permanently. Kind of a drag but I'm not relying on my Etsy income so whatever amount I get each week is a bonus. At the same time, it is a bit annoying.
On Etsy since 2007
They have access to my bank account if they need to fund a refund.
My account was put on reserve today hours after I refunded a customer who bought something by mistake

Do they shut off your ads when they do this? I've been selling on Etsy for 16 years. I got put on reserve yesterday and today I checked my ads and they show no stats- no views, no clicks. 🤔🤔🤔
I just reopened my shop after a few years when I finally had enough stuff to make stuff. I got the email after two sales from friends who wanted to support my starting business. I don’t “need” the money as I already have a job and I’m just doing this for extra cash and to make something I love, but this is ridiculous.
I just had a reserve placed on my 4 year old store. No disputes, no refunds, no massive increase in sales. The only problem may be that I post with Royal Mail, not Etsy labels. 3 days in i have added all tracking numbers for US sales, no lifting as yet...
I use Royal Mail as well, there's absolutely nothing to be gained for British sellers by using Etsy labels as Royal Mail not only collect your packages for free but also offer a label printing service, also for free. I've just had a payment reserve placed on my 10 year old shop, for etsy to require that we use tracked shipping, which as you know is £5 or more extra than standard, to access our funds is outrageous. Tracked shipping, at least with RM, wasn't even available during the height of the pandemic. I even had to reduce the physical size of the products I sell so they can be sent as large letters because the US postal service doubled the cost of sending small parcels! It's a complete con & done for no other reason than greed.
@@dobr4481 Funny as a UK seller on Etsy for 6 years today i also got the reserve set on the account. Kinda annoying as Etsy is trying to control / make extra cash flow they can use for their own agenda on those 45 days hold.
The same has happened to me I've just messaged earlier this video comment. Royal mail strikes and the problems earlier this year with overseas postage added to it. I unfortunately got sucked into free postage, which I tried to change but can't so I'm still having to pay that. I'm upset and stressed and want to close my shop but what are the alternatives? I've done dolls house fairs but they were hard work and few sales. Oh dear!!
I decided to shut down my shop today - I’m not ok with this.
I am on Etsy for 4 years, I have ~700 sales.
I will also close my shop if Etsy will not remove my shop from reserve program.

Has anyone been able to get a reserve off for having an influx of orders from craft fairs? I used the Square In Person feature, made a ton of sales, and now have a reserve.

They are going to keep 75% of your money and make interest on it for 45 days. There should be a class action lawsuit against them. They reserved my account twice in 5 months...they refuse to explain why.
It is not normal. Ebay does not impose a long wait for your income. It is really bad that etsy does. I'm sorry. Ebay just wants to get rid of small traders trying to get bigger.

That makes no sense. Any potential 'dodgy seller' would have gone through the basic KYC process with ETSY.
ID, bank account, address verification etc.
If anyone was going to 'runoff' with the monies made from any sales and not deliver the actual products...well I don't think they would get very far after leaving all their personal details behind?!

Etsy takes a long to pay sellers and they keep removing products from my shop. I stopped selling on Etsy and I am financially better off

I have no idea why I’m watching this, as I don’t sell on Etsy- but is this a newer policy? New as in after July of 2021? I had an item that was a hot seller and I got so many orders that etsy wouldn’t let me sell anymore and put my shop on vacation mode. Once they did that I never went back- I almost would’ve rather had a hold on my account than not being able to take new orders.
Yes, it came into affect in mid-2021, I believe.

I have issue Etsy put my shop on reserve. I sell just in Etsy and because of my handmade jewelry and accessories customer reach out to me that she couldn't buy my items wholesale that I offer. Because she want to buy more than 15 items the amount was more than 180€ $ and because of that I was put on reserve. The Etsy support just answer on my question that they don't have anything with that and can't remove or fix it. Long story short... It will just stay like this and so yes they are using our money this 45 days. I work on my own website because I can't grow on Etsy as I want. I will keep Etsy but they don't listen to the individual sellers as in my case and it's not easy for startup company. Any suggestions maybe?
focus on developing your website. I am going to be doing the same. Etsy used to be a better company and you could actually speak to representatives when you were having issues. Now it's 100% corporate and they do not care about small businesses.

That's bull , they will take the money from your bank . That would almost never happen ,but they're doing it now to accounts in GREAT standing
Etsy is holding funds because they are having money problems. Tons of sellers are having this trouble. Not because things are late.
How do you know if your account is in reserve, I got an order but the funds are not available in my account.
You’ll get an email saying your payment account is in reserve. If you are new to selling on Etsy, for the first 90 days, the funds become available 3 days after the sale!

@@LinTree25 I have absolutely no clue! I’m in the same situation! I was told by support that the funds may be released once the orders ship with tracking. It’s been 2 weeks and that is true for me so far. For the orders in reserve, the funds have been released about a day after the order ships. Regardless, I switched to Shopify!

That’s very weird because I have been on reserve for 7 months as a new seller that started on April. I have never had access to my funds as they say I made an influx of sales. If I was gonna runaway I would have done by now. I have emailed, called to no avail the reserve will not moved. I have tracking and orders in time yet no one removes it. The 90 day thing is a guise because mine has been 150 days. It does not just disappear after 3 months like they quote

Yup. Handmade vs resellers. Etsy has to deal with it or they will lose the core
Etsy already has for so long no more control about resellers, 85% are selling commerciall goodies..
But when they're forcing people to ship faster they're literally trying to turn into Amazon 🤷

Etsy tells you can release it with adding a valid tracking, valid tracking mean working together with shipping providers findable on aftership.. and than the item still need to be in transit..
Unless you are based in the UK and they say that Royal Mail is on their list of carriers and in the same email say they cannot track the items and there is no viable alternative for small packages. They contradict everything they say and many people on reserve don't get the money after providing suitable tracking as well.

So raise your prices up by the amount that they take for each order. Example off sight ads is 15%, raise your prices by 15%
