    1. Impulse Buying
    2. Impulse Selling
    3. Jumping into vintage watch collecting from the get go.
    4. Getting caught up in watch “rules”
    5. Buying watches to impress others
    6. Comparing own collection to someone else’s
    7. Confusing price with quality and enjoyment
    8. Confusing lug width with lug to lug.
    9. Thinking 30m watch resistance can actually go 30m deep in water.
    10. Collectors not wearing their watches
    Thank me later

    Good advices. Other recipes for frustration:
    - having to fill all the niches just because you're a "collector". You don't need at least one diver, one chrono, one gmt, one dress, one white dial, one blue dial, one black, etc. Yes, you can totally ignore categories you don't like and won't be wearing.
    - feeling compelled to buy a watch because everyone loves it. If you think the green Alpinist is ugly, don't buy it just cause it has so many fans (so it must be great !)
    - settling for something that resembles the watch you want. It doesn't work, after a short honeymoon you'll begin to look at it and feel more frustrated than satisfied. If you can't buy what you desire, either keep saving for it, or totally forget it and buy something different.
    - thinking of buying the next watch as soon as possible. This way you grow more interested in the watches you still don't own than the ones you already have, and sometimes leads to the classic "quantity over quality" trap.

      Right on! I have a ultra thin dress watch that I never use, because i needed the dress watch. Also, i have a seiko 6309 and never got it, much less the skx. Nowaday, it i had, because with the virus i cannot use vintage watches.

    • @doysler6470
      @doysler6470 4 роки тому +2

      Settling is ok if you're after the design, not the watch itself. I bought myself a Steinhart as a stepping stone and reminder that one day I will get a Rolex GMT Master II Pepsi. After a few months with it, I don't really think I want a Rolex anymore at all. The Steinhart pretty much checks all of the aesthetic wishes that made me love the Rolex Pepsi so much. The Day-date or Daytona though, oof, a whole another story. Last rule, I'm kinda guilty of. I'm happy to say that I am still new to the hobby though, so I have time to correct it.

    Another advice is: Remember why you bought your current watch in the first place, just because you had it for a while doesn’t mean that it doesn’t still tick all the boxes. I’m wearing a watch for six years now and I was getting a bit tired of it, thought about flipping it, I looked around, just to realize keeping it is the best choice.

    I think it's amazing that a mechanical watch can keep almost perfect time and also wind itself. I think about the geniuses that invented all of the internal components of mechanical watches like the one who invented the hair spring and the balance wheell and the math that went into determining the sizes of each and how many coils the hair spring goes around the balance wheel just enough to accurately pace real time as the balance wheel oscillates back and forth. And not only that but all of this genius was manifested on a level that is hard to see.

  • @SevGW
    @SevGW 4 роки тому +3

    Great video! To make it clear for people: 30m water resistance means the watch‘s gaskets and crystal may withstand the pressure that exists 30m under the surface of still water. And with every little thing the pressure multiplies. If you shoot water from your garden hose onto your 30m WR dress watch it will most likely be flooded because this water resistance already is exceeded. If you throw your watch in a pool or swim with it the force of motion alone multiplies the pressure of water on the watch. And water will enter! So be careful! Me personally I only let my dive (not dive style) watches have heavy contact with water! Also: if you open the caseback, change the gaskets, etc the watch will LOSE its RATED water resistance UNLESS it is professionally sealed and pressure tested afterwards!

    • @itachi1742
      @itachi1742 4 роки тому +1

      Just wanted to make a correction regarding opening the caseback. First of all, technically you're actually correct. You will lose the RATED water resistance. However, if the procedure is done PROPERLY, you will still be able to use the watch at its rated water resistance with no issues.

    One mistake I made, was buying watches that didn’t fit my lifestyle. Everyone seems to say you need a dress watch and an “everyday” watch that’s not a diver. Well I never dress up, I’m at an age where everyone I know is married, I work a blue collar job, and I don’t wear super fancy clothes to church. Most “everyday” watches are too nice even on the weekends. I never know what I am going to find myself doing, working on the house, cars, moving furniture, etc. So my collection is comprised of gshocks, field watches, and divers. Think about your life style, and what watches fit that, or else you could end up with a bunch of watches you never wear, just for the sake of having them because everyone else says you’re “supposed” to have it.

    • @scottd7615
      @scottd7615 4 роки тому +1

      Justin Puckett yes. I never owned a dress watch. Gshocks, sports watches, dive watches only. Besides, a decent dive watch makes a great dress watch.

    • @martintanz9098
      @martintanz9098 4 роки тому +2

      You are onto something. One man's every day watch is another's dress watch. In the end, most people barely notice, even if you wear something like a G shock with a suit.
      That said, I like watches a little more on the dressy side as I tend to take my watch off at the gym, or when doing odd jobs around the house.

    I pawned my Omega Seamaster 300 quartz Goldeneye watch when I was down on my luck. I got $400 for it and even paid the first repayment of $100, but was late with the payment the next month. The shop manager wanted the watch for her boyfriend so being late, she “took” it. So I got $300 for my $5000 Bond watch!! Every single day I miss it 😢

    Great channel man! Impulse buying is translated for the musician as GAS lol. Yea I’m new to this myself. However, I’ve been doing a lot of research. It’s helping me to take a step back & think about what I’m looking for in a watch or 2 or 3 lol. Buying a Apple Watch actually started me into wanting a more practical & meaningful time piece. I’ve only own this watch for 3 months & just ready to sell. It stands out the most as a really good fitness/health tracker, but I don’t care too much as I’m stuck in the house more so now caring for my grandpa. Anyway, I did preorder my first watch & it’s the Hamilton PSR stainless steel.

    I think it's worth it to get the japanese version over an international version. It's not always better, I'll admit, sometimes they are built exactly the same. But it's always given me a certain peace of mind to know I've got something that was made in Japan for the japanese market. I'd pay extra for that because I enjoy the watch more that way.

      I’m 22 and I thought my 18 year old brother was wasting his money collecting coins and watches. But I got into talking about his collection with him and he taught me what an auto and quartz watch is. I was blown away with how cool his seiko presage is, his victorinox, his phoibus and the old quartz Hamilton he got from our great uncle! If it weren’t for my younger brother I don’t know if I’d ever have the same passion I have for watches that I do now. It’s crazy how much my brother knows about watches for being 18! Some great points, and the video as a whole was put together nicely. The only o/comment I would make relates to your last point...
    Some people actually get thrilled to just have a "collection" with no real intent on wearing them in a rotation...they like looking at them...they like just knowing they've got several & they're comforted with the thought that they're stored in some sort of a display case on top of their dresser. Then some people I'm sure, just have 'em and like bragging..."Well I've got 25 watches & none of them cost me less than $200" or some nonsense like that.

    The most fun watches I’ve owned: 1- Casio duro (owned 5 years spent 40 bucks) on its second battery and has a chunk of the crystal missing but it’s the first serious watch I’ve owned that got me into the watch world/collecting! 2- Casio g shock dw5600. I wear this to work everyday. So simple yet so practical. Easy to look at. Takes a huge beating but it’s indestructible! Best 40-45 dollar watch! People that won’t own or talk down to quartz watches haven’t experienced the benefits of one. Dead accuracy (better than autos) Durability, ease of maintenance (you can change the battery!) I prefer quartz over automatic for their “grab and go” ease of use. I own a few autos but it’s honestly a pain to adjust the day date and time on a few of the autos I own. It’s ok to like quartz, quartz watches are part of the horological world too and should be appreciated!!

      'Can't argue with your choices, I think everyone needs to wear what brings them joy, and is reliable. I have a modest collection of a dozen watches, about 50/50 between quartz and mechanical, and the irony of this whole thing is that my 2nd most accurate watch (used to be my most accurate until I got one w/ multiband 6) is a Daiso Rosso Bianco basic watch for 500 yen (less than $5 usd). Inside is a Seiko quartz movement, and it remains the least expensive and most useful souvenir from my trip to Japan. I honestly thought about buying a box of them online and giving them to people for birthdays and holidays and stuff. So yeah, you never know where you're going to find that surprise watch.

    1. I'm glad fellow T3 bots told me not to impulse sell my Seiko Sarb 065 and I live by my own rules. I get called out all the time because all my straps are on reverse sides on my watch, because I'm a lefty who wears a watch on my left hand, and it's just easier for me to take them on and off.

    • @mikek6313
      @mikek6313 4 роки тому

      Yep and far as reversing straps, it's a Right-handed world and we lefties just adapt. It's just different than a right wearing a watch on Left hand because our Right hand is non-dominante... and don't even get me started on Scissors that's a whole other issue. LOL

    • @3rdstone1
      @3rdstone1 4 роки тому

      Actually even if you're right handed, wearing the strap on reverse sides could be more practical as it's less chance the "little tip" of the strap get caught in stuff when you move the hand. I have a Seiko SNXS73 for which i bought a little better bracelet than the original typical mediocre Seiko 5 standards. It still didn't fit perfectly as I wanted on my quite small wrist, so I reversed it. Now the clasp sits better under neath my wrist. Have to get used to that everything is kinda backwards, but still better.
      People calling out a lefty for reversing a strap are actually not using their brains properly IMHO..

    I laughed my ass off at the pause before “never buy an Invicta.” That was my gateway watch, no idea it was a homage, wanted an automatic and it was 50$. Learned a lot from that watch, took it apart, put it back together, found out what I liked and didn’t like in a piece. I’m sure lots of people have gateway watches that are mvmt or Daniel Wellington now. Everyone starts somewhere. Still have two around somewhere, good movements and you don’t have to worry about them when you mow the lawn.

    My no.1 rule is never spend more than £300 on a timepiece, because then you won't be tempted to flip it because it's an asset, and you'll feel happier wearing it every day. I have about 20 watches and a bunch of pocket watches that I love. I'll never own a Rolex (hate 'em) or a Patek (love 'em) but I really don't care.

    I find some irony in my own life through this video. You say don't buy an Invicta watch and several years ago when I decided I wanted a more "adult" watch that was the first thing I did because "Hey, this is on amazon and that's a decent price."
    Then once I got it in the mail and tried to fit it to my wrist I managed to "break" it, I don't remember how, but I never touched it after that.
    As far as the water resistance for watches goes, other than some digital models are there any watches that you would say are truly water resistant? Like in a shower, pool, kayaking?
    One final thing, I'm glad I found this video and you make the 10 mistakes to avoid so practical. I've made these mistakes in other hobbies as well. Sometimes I still kick myself over a rifle I bought and sold on impulse once I realized it wasn't the exact model I wanted.

    Yep, I should wear a dunce cap with your Mistake #3 written on it. For my second enthusiast purchase, I paid over $3k for an "unworn" (questionable) mid nineties Zenith El Primero Academy with full calendar and chrono. It is a very impressive watch. I figured that it would need a service. I did not figure that it would need to go to Zenith in Switzerland at a cost of nearly $1k. Also, I bought it knowing that the language of the week and month is Italian. How is that for impulsive? If I ever get it back from Switzerland, I can then decide if I will keep it.

    Thanks for an informative guide. I have an issue to resolve personally and your view could help. Only Rolex and Patek hold their price. Other expensive watches usd 25,000 upwards don’t. This is a deterrent in so far as I am concerned. Love the VC chrono 3rd generation (gold case)but the immediate depreciation is killing. Pre owned is not appealing. Sort of dampened and narrowed the joy and field of watches.

    All good points, especially the buying watches to impress others. Unless somebody is a watch geek, they aren't likely to even notice. I'll add one that goes along with don't buy watches you're afraid to wear; don't buy watches as investments. Seriously, most going to cost you some amount if you sell them eventually. There are a few that would have made very good investments, but that's always in hindsight. If you hit the lotto in that regard, good for you, but it's hard to predict what will be popular 5-10 years from now.

    I love #7. My favorite and most worn in my 32 watch collection is some of my most inexpensive watches. My top favorite are a Vostok Komandirski 24hr with 200 meter water resistant. Its white dial and bezel. I am wearing my Pagani Hulk that has a Seiko movement that's 5 seconds fast a day and I like the 44mm size better than the Rolex 40mm and side by side, they are the same look and I have $10-17k more in my bank account. I also love my Quartz movement Jack Mason Aviation Pursuit with really great lumen and it lists for less than $200 and less than $400 if you want an automatic movement. It's a Texas based company and great service. So you are correct in saying I don't have to spend thousands to enjoy watches.
