This blows right by the Granada series with Jeremy Brett & David Burke/Edward Hardwick, consider by many Holmes fans one of the best portrayals as well as failing to mention that Brett also played Watson in the Los Angeles production of The Crucifer of Blood with Charlton Heston's Holmes, briefly seen @39:09.
Also in The Sopranos. When I see a chess set in the movies or tv, I always look at how the board is setup. Usually it’s wrong. One exception is in Humphrey Bogart movies. But then he was known to be an avid chess player.
Just yesterday I saw the second episode of the 1965 (Douglas Wilmer) series. "the illustrious client" It featured Peter Wyngarde as a Baron. Nearly at the end of the episode there was a scene with Watson and Peter together (porselain) I am absolutely sure that the great Jeremy Brett has seen that scene too. The way Peter moved and acted when he started to examine the porselain was, to me, a typical Brett move/style. It amazed me. I like the 1965 series but Holmes played by Douglas Wilmer has too many comedian facial expressions. Jeremy Brett, to me, is the best Holmes ever. He was briliant, amazing. He also played Holmes just before the Brett series. Thanks!
I suppose, the one of the best Sherlock Holms still is russian actor Vasily Livanov and Mr Salomin as dr Vatson, they both are great, unfortunately I couldn't find these films translated to English only in a Russian language. .. :(
It's makes for a bit of ironic history that the majority of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories were published after Doyle had killed the detective. My favorite Holmes actor will always be Basil Rathbone; he so encapsulated the part both in looks and manner. The only problem with the Rathbone films is Nigel Bruce's Watson, where he is made into such an incompetent fool and oaf, done so, I guess, to provide comic relief though the movie makers didn't have to go that far! But then it was standard Hollywood tradition that you could only have one unadulterated hero per film, a practice that extended into the days of the original Star Trek. Sure, Leonard Nimoy's Spock was heroic but not to the ridiculous heights put into play for Shatner's Kirk. Jeremy Brett's characterization of Holmes is probably my second favorite. But while this BBC's version of Watson isn't embarrassing, Brett's Holmes is too many times made to go against the aforementioned Hollywood ideal cliche of the "no-fault hero". Brett's Holmes is not enough of a "hero", in my opinion; the character's eccentricities and foibles border on the "what's the point?"
I'm certainly glad there's someone out there who enjoys Basil Rathbone as Holmes. He does have the look and manner of Conan Doyle's famous creation. I enjoy Nigel Bruce's performance as Watson even though in the films he's portrays the character as a bumbling, almost comic character but I don't mind too much because their on-screen chemistry is terrific plus the fact in real life they were great friends. I have also listen to them on the radio series called The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was this show that helped enhance my interest in Holmes, Rathbone and Bruce, classic radio, and even more importantly my interest in the mystery genre. Rathbone will always be my personal favorite actor to play Holmes. Bruce added a sense of warmth and kindness to his role. From what I understand in real life he had a great sense of humor and one of the great character actors of all time. Both of them brought class to the movies in a time when films had plots, characters, and convincing performances. Not like the films of today that focus too much on violence and sex. Jeremy Brett did a dry and convincing job as Holmes on TV. I don't care too much for the new British TV series Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and even more so the recent CBS TV series Elementary with Johnny Lee Miller. I've seen the two movies with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law and they are good to watch.
cj holmes I admit I have a prejudice against Benedict Cumberbatch; in my opinion, neither Sherlock Holmes or Dr. Watson were supposed to look like props for teenage magazine covers... in other words, young and good-looking. While Cumberbatch has a rich speaking voice, I still think he is wrong for the role and I just can't bring myself to watch his series. Of course, this has been the trend in the mass media for decades now... can you imagine a Basil Rathbone or even Humphrey Bogart trying to make it in movies or television today?
There can only be one Captain of the Enterprise: William Shatner. There can only be one Sherlock Holmes: Jeremy Brett. If you disagree I feel sorry for you, I really do.
Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett are the two greatest Sherlock Holmes actors ever. Their talent had no limit and they had those perfect face cuts and jaw lines.
Roshan George John Guilgud was better than either of them.
@@jimlaguardia8185 I like Arthur Wontner and Ronald Howard's portrayals myself. :D And, of course, the Frogwares video games.
Although he only played him once, Rupert Everett was perfect as Holmes

This doc. was produced in 1985 and so it’s reference point ends there when it comes to Sherlock Holmes and the actors that portrayed him..
it amazes me how often, in movies, a chess board is setup wrong!
Including in The Shawshank Redemption.

There are too few comments on this video.
Ronald Howard was pretty close to perfect, and he also had the best Watson.
