BMW F30 330i [Test Drive] - Fan Car Genting Hillclimb | YS Khong Driving

- We get to test the F30 330i, the last of the 3 Series that appeared just for a very short stint before BMW Malaysia started introducing the 330e.
The owner, Joon, has done some customisation on the tyres, and fitted a set of upgraded brakes.
We take it up for a shakedown. Tyres were brand new and hadn't been scrubbed in, so it was a bit skitterish, but overall it fared well. Very well, in fact.

Yes, it took a lot more effort to get the best out of this car. Anybody can drive a fast car.
F30 330i is a rare breed in Malaysia as it was only sold for 1 year in 2016, BMW decided to discontinue it as 330e sales are better than 330i. It's a pity, I would take the 330i over 330e.. the new B48 engine which is much better than the previous 328i N20 engine..

Uncle, 6 minutes from highway exit to the roundabout. I think you need to pasang heart rate monitor on your passenger. He looked anxious at times. Anyway thanks for the good demo of the 3 series’ abilities.

Wow this is incredible run. I watch a lot of YS genting run from Saga, Myvi, Mazda 3 to Supra, C43 AMG, Golf GTI, G20 330i, Civic Type R.
And i can say this is the fastest run of all bcos of empty road due to MCO. F30 is incredibly balance in its handling unlike a more nimble n over steerish G20. Yet F30 just turn and doesnt understeer with that wide tyres n 19" rim.
This run was done before MCO, but there were less people going up.
Wow, that means by MCO, its even more empty now.

Uncle have so much predictive driving. Sometimes we actually can read the behavior of others like the Kenari but Uncle knew you were a bit too fast approaching it and manage it well. Usually many drivers just drive fast approaching cars ahead and expect cars ahead will notice them. This drive ia really fast and less traffic day.
Yes, one must always be careful. That is how you remain safe. If you watch all of our videos, we always look at the vehicle in front, and slow down. Sometimes you may not notice it, but we do .

Are these adaptive or passive dampers ? I found adaptives on a m135i poor, lacks adequate rebound control. Very neutral handling car on fast sweepers, but hard to pin the front down on tight bends. Spongey brakes seem to be a norm, but will work just fine. Nice review Ysk !

This F30 330i really handles very similarly to the new Mazda 3. Or the other way around.
Always wanted to own this f30 328i version. It's price now is more less like a brand new base civic 1.8 only. Is it practical to own and drive this car around without going 'bankruptcy'? Some folks in bwm group say the drivetrain failure itself could cost abt 10k to replace.
Good idea.
For the 328i (N20 engine) have a tech check the Timing Chain guides. They're plastic that tend to fail and can cause the chain to 'jump'. See whether the car followed its Tecnical Service Bulletin (TSB) etc.. For the 330i (B48 engine) alle ist gut. N20 has a weak bottom end so buy an um-modded unit. If you can stretch...get a 330i with the B48.
As for driving you bankrupt..secret of driving ANY continental car is to never defer on maintenance. Theu're all machines. Just that Euro high performance cars tend to have fine tolerances. Keep on top of things and yer good.

I think the Jaguar is very exotic, but the BMW is more familiar territory. The sheer population will mean easier parts availability.

Of course - you only need to slow down enough to determine if it is safe to proceed, then you proceed - back to full throttle. QED. Once the danger is past, no need to continue being slow, right?
Looks like the transmission is acting a little bit weird in manual mode. The most prominent one is uncle flick up it went back down again.

What contribute / factors in causing fire in the engine bay ? Perhaps coolant leak, below recommended engine oil specification / oil level?
Faulty wiring, causing sparking, leaking fuel or oil, causing unintended igniting.

Hi uncle! great drive as always. How is this car driving experience compared to your Golf R MK7?
It felt very good. Hard to really compare as both are very different in behaviour, but both are as fun to drive in their own ways. The Golf has more power and grip because of AWD, and both cars are the same weight. The R brakes are also 4 pot front and 2 pot rear.

@@rexyong-3939 the vanos system failed when i was going at 200 km/h, causing the dislocation of the timing chain and cam, end up replacing the whole engine. now there's some problem with the torque converter fml

Brader, there is already a lot of information online about inching up, but we will study and consider. It is just information on what options are open to you, that is all. Any competent tyre seller can give you the same information. Very cut and dry information.

I have a Perodua Axia SE 2017. I plan to upsize my rims to 15". Could you please advice how I should approach rim and tyre sizing ? Car is still stock at the moment.
When inching up, make sure you do not change the rolling circumference too much as that would affect the overall gearing and speedometer reading, plus the acceleration. Up to 3 percent or so would be acceptable. Generally you have to reduce the aspect ratio as you go up. Also check the offset. The new rims should have the same offset so that it does not foul anything.
Good tyre shops should know about inching up, because nowadays many ppl do it.

Stock Axia wheels & tyres are 175/65r14. A suggested upsize will be 15" with 185/55r15, that shouldn't upset the gearing & Speedo reading as they have similar dimensions & rev/km.

Joon Suan did you have to put some kind of like brake patch or lapping to get it evenly brake in before proper grip is achieved ? I did upgrade mine to orange BBK and it still have the hissing sound at lower speed ...328i msport

I'm no expert, but iv a 320d m sport and in sport it feels like a pair of hands takes over the steering wheel to the point we're if you try and kick the back end out on the corners it controls the car in way that u feel danger is close. I don't know what it is but sport + is were its at 👍🏻
Sport mode allows a bit of play in rhe traction control system to give you a bit of tail out.

The car was just asking to be driven hard, and the road was relatively clear, the weather was excellent, but as you can see, I was careful as well. All in a day's work.
@@YSKhongDriving maybe the tyres improved the handling a lot, Uncle Khong? My 330i in standard form with 225 front and 255 rear (wide enough already) has a really happy and bouncy tail...so easily affected by mid corner bumps. And during the rain the tail just wants to spin itself into an oversteer.

We have to be alert at all times. I saw that coming, and consciously lifted off. To be fair we were coming up quite fast. In cases like this, one must be careful.

For an auto it doesn't make sense. You can feel the braking and acc from the sound and visual.
