SINGAPORE: Chinatown | Arab Quarter | Little India | Tasting Durian for the First Time

  • In this video of Living the Jo life, we visit three different cultural parts of Singapore: Chinatown, the Arab Quarter and Little India. We start in Chinatown, where we visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, and explore the street markets, shopping streets, and unique architecture. We also try out durian for the first time. Next, we discover the Arab Quarter with its combination of Arab influence and colorful streets with bars and restaurants. The amazing gold-domed Sultan Mosque definitely stands out among the bright colored building facades. We finish off in Little India, which is another colorful neighborhood of Singapore, with fruit markets, lots of jewelry shops selling gold, gold and more gold, and the Tekka Center, which has a wet market, food stalls and an upstairs area selling colorful textiles and garments such as dresses and sarees.

Guys, simplistically speaking (because its more complex than this) ,there are two broad aromatic groups in Durians, the esters (nice smelling) and the amines (not nice smelling). People who like durians have both sets of olfactory sensor genes, thus smelling the complete "picture". People lacking the appropriate ester receptors only perceive the amine groups hence they can only describe the stinky side. This broad concept applies to most stinky foods as well incl certain cheeses, putrified meats etc. Your hubby sounds Scandinavian, whom generally tolerate stronger smelling foods culturally as their population is thought to have a higher prevalence of the appropriate receptors amongst the Caucasian gene set. Hence, his perception may be quite different from the two ladies.

best way to eat durian is to forget about a fruit that is sweet or juicy, because if you expect it to be that way, it would obviously taste very different. Think of it as eating thick creamy custard from a fruit instead. With different varieties of durian giving different custardy flavor profiles. Some can be simple and sweet, come bitter sweet. some alcoholic bitter as well....
There is a reason why many of us like it.

Hi Singaporean here. There are different grades in Durian quality. If someone doesn't like it, I am inclined to believe they must have brought the inferior ones which are cheaper. Singapore is Mustafa as much as it is Marina Bay Sands, and Singaporeans genuinely embrace a diversty of cultures as one can see from your fantastic video. In most countries, for minorities to be accepted as a true equal, one often has to assimilate into the mainstream culture. In Singapore, it seems that they take it one level higher--the Indians and Malays have the space to celebrate their culture and religion. What a confident, peaceful country and people!

Durian actually comprises of different intense flavour - the good and the bad. For those durian lovers, their taste buds are able to suppress the bad tasting part of the durian flesh, leaving the most intense aromatic flavour of the fruit to savour.
If you taste the fruit a few times over the course of a week, you will slowly be accustom to it and a whole new world will open up to you. Durian is the king of fruits for this reason.
Do make sure you get the good durian and not the cheap ones. Makes a world of difference.
For durian lover like myself, I can create a situation where I taste the worse of the durian so much so I want to vomit. How to do that? You simply eat the best durian and when you eat the lousy cheap durian, the goodness of the good durian will cover the goodness of the cheap durian leaving the nastiness for you to taste.

You can watch UA-cam for durian reaction and you will find a few where the foreigner gradually loves the fruit after several tries on different occasions.

Durian is known as the King of fruits n mangosteen as the Queen. It’s like majority of Asian that doesn’t like blue cheese.
Fyi the weather in Sgp is tropical (hot n humid) whereas in Saudi Arabia it’s hot n dry weather. Just drink lots of water or fruit juices n njoy. 😂

It's definitely an acquired taste! It was fun to try. Actually where we live along the Red Sea, it is very humid particularly in August. The difference is that no one goes out in the day in Saudi.
