Hey RA! Have you had a chance to come down to Casa Grande and take video of any of the rigs down here?

Not sure what city you’re in but Mesa no longer excepts about 90% of what’s going into that truck. They told me I had to wash out my containers, they were no longer except the packaging from frozen food even if it was washed out. All they basically want is cardboard, and clean plastic containers and I guess aluminum cans. I my opinion recycling is a complete waste of money.

    From the city

RE: Mesa’s Recycling Program Status & Update on Recycle Collection Routes
City of Mesa staff continues to work on identifying both short- and long-term solutions to restore Mesa’s Blue Barrel Recycling Program. We continue to use our sole materials recovery facility (MRF) vendor and have been delivering the maximum amount of material to them based on their capacity limits. A sincere thank you goes out to our residents for their ongoing patience and assistance in ensuring that only accepted items are placed in their recycle barrels.
The Republic Services MRF at the Salt River Landfill remains offline but they have indicated that they will be reconstructing their facility and should be operational by Summer 2023. The City of Mesa has an active contract to deliver recyclable material to them and when their facility reopens, we will resume transporting material to that location. In addition, we will also be issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for our recyclable material. The goal is to have an active contract and delivery location for all accepted items by January 1, 2023.
Regarding long-term solutions, we continue to explore constructing and operating a city owned MRF. Preliminary findings from an independent feasibility study indicate that the facility would not be sustainable without establishing a regional partnership with other municipalities to increase material volume. Therefore, we will be meeting with surrounding cities to discuss potential partnership opportunities.
Update on blue and green barrel collection routes
Operations staff continues to recruit and interview interested applicants to fill vacant solid waste operator positions. However, until we are fully staffed, periodic challenges will remain in ensuring that all daily collection routes are covered, especially when combined with unexpected illness-related absences.
To minimize service disruptions, we are maximizing the use of our available resources, including:
    • Assigning foremen, who normally manage crews, to operate collection vehicles to service open routes
    • Assigning administrative office staff to manage crews
How does this impact blue recycle and green yard waste collection routes?
On days that we do not have sufficient staff available, it will be necessary to combine one or more blue recycle and green yard waste collection routes for that specific day. This means that the same truck will service both the blue and green barrel and it will be necessary to landfill the material. Despite this, residents are asked to continue to only place accepted items in the appropriate barrel as the City’s general business practice is to send as much material as possible to the appropriate recycle and green waste vendors. Therefore, we must adhere to vendor requirements to avoid any financial penalties due to contamination.
