One of the best Hack and Slashes ever made. Remarkably ball busting, but rarely unfair... on repeat playthroughs where you should understand the cues for when a ninja will throw exploding kunais and how to guard them. Aside from that, it's really well designed. I bought the game on Xbox One in High School and I love it. The only problems I have are 1. Some of the bosses are annoying due to having to fight common enemies along side them, especially on higher difficulties. 2. Lack of lock-on which, spoiler for every other game, never gets introduced for some baffling reason. 3. The clone fights that are exclusive to higher difficulties. I normally love rival fights in these kinds of games, but they really only work when there's some sort of gimmick in the gameplay that you exploit to fight them, which Ninja Gaiden doesn't have anything along those lines. For Devil May Cry, you can do a little taunt which will boost your style and refill a bit of your devil trigger gauge, and Vergil is only vulnerable when he does his taunts so it's a beautifully hectic case of waiting for him to taunt. Bayonetta has Witch Time which itself makes every fight unique. Ninja Gaiden only has standard mechanics that work phenomenally well, but are a pain in the ass to go against with a very smart AI. Still one of my favorite games of all time though. Strongly recommend it.
clones were easy to deal if you spammed combos that stunned them, the easiest weapon to deal with them was your katana, once you knew how they worked you could fight them with all weapons
Ninja Gaiden was the game where I learned to get over myself for the love of the combat mechanics, and also where I discovered speedrunning (this and chaos theory)
Nice review. I'd add that learning to counter-attack the enemies will help quite a bit and you can rotate the camera in NGB so you don't have to rely on the trigger to re-center. Once you get the hang of it, it's not that bad. That's a big upgrade from NG04. I've been playing this game since 2005 and it's just awesome. I highly recommend it to all. Learn more than just wall attacks, flying swallows, and farming for essence as there's so much more to the game. I also recommend playing with the kill counter on as you'll always know when you killed someone and how many enemies to go in a Fiend Challenge. Mission Mode can be tough and challenging but very rewarding once everything has been beaten on Master Ninja. Have fun playing!!
OMG! YESSSSSSS!!!! This is my fave NG and I wish they would of made the second and third in this way. I do absolutely agree with the bow and it’s one of the few things that IMO Sigma got right
This review was a beautiful nostalgia trip for me. Bought it on launch for my og xbox. I find the game was difficult for the first 2 levels, especially that horseback mid-boss on level 2. But once you can upgrade your moves, it progressively gets easier. The dragon sword's air dash-strike is one of those moves that really improve your game. It gives you the ability to perform quick strikes while staying mobile, and more likely to dodge incoming hits from surrounding enemies. After I had unlocked that move, my confidence grew and so did my skills. I felt like I was dying a lot less. And yes those ghost fish are assholes. I rolled my eyes immediately when I saw them in this video!
This timing is wild, I just bought the Ninja Gaiden collection on the PS Store recently, and it’s still really fun!!! favorite weapon has to be Dragon’s Claw & Tiger’s Fang 🐉🔥
clicking in the right stick switches between 1st and 3rd person camera control. also kinda fun but you can use shurikens to attack cancel, and freeform custom combos this way
Really fun game. I first started with the second one not knowing what it was. I was 10 at the time. I came back and played it and man is the game hella chaotic on any difficulty past mentor. But man was it fun, and so were the weapons we were given to play around with.
About those ghost fish, don't use the flail or lunar on them. The most effective weapon is the dragon sword. Jump back and forth and do jump attacks repeatedly until they're all gone. You may get hit once or twice, but it will save you elixirs.
When it was released it was ahead of it's time! Complex beautiful difficult asf! But at the same time it set many standards in what a hack and slash game should be! On Xbox showed what the machine could do! The second one came somehow... unpolished due to internal conflicts! If a NG2 BLACK was published things would be very different.... anyway great design great games!!! Oh....there was a NG3?????
The thing that pisses me off is that when you find a dragon sword replica for your sword collection, it never has the place in the hilt for the eye of the dragon. A paisley stone with a light in it. What is so hard about that?
About those little hellicopters you have to use the WINDMILL SHURIKEN on them while the ghost fishes are easily defeated using the vigoorian flail but start attacking by jumping because they can't bite you in mid air and do the on landing technique after the jump but only press the waek attack button repeatedly. About the annoying cameras team ninja somewhat did that on purpose. You can press the camera button to re-focus the camera in the middle but the most important thing I have noticed after years of playing the game and what the player really needs to learn is to "listen" to sounds and voices etc enemies creates and "learn" to "react" to them even if they're "off cam" or you can't see them. The problematic camera also seems to add some more challenge and some kind of visual intensity to the game as it automatically zooms in and out while focusing on ryu performing an UT or a Ninpo.
Some tips for very annoying enemies: You can completely negate the ghost fish and make them a yellow essence farming tool by pressing jump with directional then X (with dragon sword). Ryu will do a jumping spinning whirlwind slash. Do this backwards and forwards to farm yellow essence. You can move mobile around the map with this move as well especially for ghost fish areas. Also press jump on the spot and use windmill shuriken for those flying laser drones, they'll keep coming you just have to keep jumping windmill shuriken when they're in the projectile range.
nope, nunchakus and the nunchakus with blades(forgot the name btw) were the best weapon agaisnt them, you just did the combo where you just stood in place and whirlwind them around you while the combo lasted, that way they would never damage you and worked everytime
@@ajr5678 you never get hit the trick I suggested and you can quickly move around the map with it as well. Where as with the vigoorian flail, you are basically stuck in the same spot when performing the combo. There is a way you can move around but it's not as quick as the directional jumping X of the dragon sword which is like I said is not only invincible but you also can get to where you want to be much quicker.
Use your windmill shuriken against the laser drones. If not use your amor Piercing arrows. Use your flail nunchucks and spin it for the fish . Also use the ninponthat surrounds you.
You enter first person mode and look the direction you want to jump. But the camera isn't that much of an issue just control it with the right stick.......😅
The game was only challenging till you learn the mechanics. In which once I did, all I had to do was run up walls and slash down 90% of the time to kill things.
Best hack and slash ever made and it's not close. The worst enemy in the game is the camera you're not wrong there but for all the problems the camera and movement gave me it never stopped me. After playing the game over the past year through every difficulty and all the missions it's something you get used to and learn to predict enemy movement and attack patterns. I know it was probably not the intention of the bad camera but still. Also did you know you can Wind Sprint off ANY enemy in the game? Makes the Vigoorian Solider guys a breeze as I noticed in the footage they were messing you up bad. You have to jump off their heads to make the process go smoothly but most people don't even consider it. It's a very OP move when you get down to it.
Playing through the Sigma version on hard recently I came away hating the bosses. It's almost impossible to get a feel for when the boss is vulnerable because they can block or dodge your attacks whenever they feel like it. Bosses even cancel the start up of their attacks in order to dodge sometimes or worst of all, blocking while doing nothing and punishing Ryu for daring to strike them. Between the camera, two additional goons and RNG boss invulnerability I really felt the second half of the game kind of fell apart. The combat is good and up there with the best of the genre but the bosses are among the worst I feel.
