to make the train wider, so you can sit 3 people (close together) on each side of the centre aisle. Came in handy with the Covid because you can have two people on the same seat and still have plenty of space between them

They are also from 1996. They will probably be replaced by new driverless rolling stock around 2025.

@@Togangehver14dag That's a bit optimistic. The new CBTC system won't be completed until 2022 at the earliest. When you then add the order process, delivery time, and the vast reorganization of the infrastructure that's required, you won't see a driverless S-Train until at least 2030, and for the whole system to go driverless even longer. Plus the fact that the current Litra SA/SE will never run driverless, and 50 of the 136 SA/SE Trains are only about 14 years old. And they have a projected life of 30 years.

@@Crueligan ‘Ringbanen’ The circle Line will be the pilot project for driverless S-trains. But it may come sooner than later. The amount you can save by taking driver cost out of the equation could shortend the lifespan of the existing stocks. But given the history of infrastructure fuckery when it comes to Danish rail infrastructure programs betting on status que is a safer bet. Sadly

@@martinjuulandersen9694 I know all about the proposed plans, since I’m a engine driver with DSB. The thing that will determine the time period is the restructuring of the infrastructure, and when the next generation of trains will be delivered. The current trains will never run automatically, and since the process of ordering, building and replacing the entire fleet of trains usually takes 8-10 years, and that process haven’t even started yet, it will be some time before all the lines will be run automatically. Perhaps the F-Line will be automated in perhaps 2026-27, at the earliest.

All the stations have to be rebuilt with screen doors like on the Metro before they can convert to driverless (thanks to experiences with the safety systems and its problems on the Metro), and rebuilding all 90+ stations will take over 10 years if past renovations are anything to go by. Although 5th gen is intended to be able to run fully automated, they definitely won't be automated right away. With the current status of things and all the other new trains we're still waiting on, don't expect to see new s-trains till 2030 or later. The current 4th gen are in the process of being renovated, which will take them to 2027 or later, and they are generally in good condition and run reliably enough that they're not in immediate need of replacement.
