    Nice video of truly unique rail material. The short large cars, with double wide doors in the middle of each car, and the unconventional bogies of single axle wheels under each car, and two on the end ones. These trains are like no other in the hole world.

      The trains were built as prototypes by Siemens, and because of the unique single-axle bogies with hollow axles, Siemens wouldn't give any warranty on the suspension or wheel system. There has however never been any issues with it. Every other axle is powered, making for 6 powered axles (3 in each half) out of 10 on a full length train set. And the cars were made to be half length of the old S-trains in order to more easily go through curves, and to take up less space with bulging sides.

      whole world*, and yes, we have some very unique and “strange” looking trains here in Denmark, but they’re also very flexible in service, the S-trains being probably the widest train in the world, running rubber nosed, walkthrough diesel and electric trains couple together, only in Denmark, and having the largest and fastest outisde S-train network in the world.

    FWIW: The majority of the network the S-trains run on was built between 1847 and 1900. The central Copenhagen section was built on the former fortifications around Copenhagen, thus the three "gate" stations right after central station, which were the locations of the former city gates. Several of the stations were replaced a couple times as it became necessary to increase capacity, and the tracks redone, thus Nørreport is actually one of the oldest stations in the country - it opened in 1888. The lines were originally built for steam trains (fuelled by coal), but the electrification started in the mid-1920s, with the first test runs performed in 1926. The tracks on Nørreport were lowered (dug down) about 20 cm to make room for the overhead wires (you can still see a visible line on the walls where the original trackbed was).
    Line F was the first to open in 1934, with A B C opening shortly after. F incidentally means Frederiksberg, where the line originally terminated. A is for Allerød, B is for Birkerød, C is for Charlottenlund, H is for Hareskov (where the line originally terminated before it was extended to Farum). When the second generation trains arrived in the late 1960s, the service was greatly expanded throughout the 70s and line E (for express) was added to supplement lines A and B. In the late 1970s the 3rd generation S-trains were purchased to expand the service further, and line L (for Lyngby) was added as supplement for line B. The 3rd gen trains ran exclusively on line B and L until all the trains were replaced by 4th gen in 2000-onwards. The lines have been redone several times over the years, which is why the letters no longer have anything to do with their destination. In the 1990s we got line K (for Køge) to supplement line A in rush hour. K later became A+, and line L became B+. H already got a H+ in the 1980s, but all the lines (except for F) also had an X-version (express line) since the 1970s. With the 4th (current) gen trains entering service in 2000, the lines were redone again - the + version of the lines were removed and all lines got 10 minute service (used to be 20), and all X lines except for Bx were dropped. When the F line was extended to Ny Ellebjerg it switched to 5 minute service (but the trains are half as long). The trains have always run from about 5.30 in the morning to midnight, but a few years ago they started to run every half hour all night on nights after Friday and Saturday - this coincided with the termination of night buses in Copenhagen.

      Yeah, it’s my top 3 train sounds, with the øresunds train between denmark and sweden on third place, these s trains at 2nd, and of course, the siemens taurus locos take 1st place, can’t beat that sound.

    Now, you guys might wonder why some trains look very awful in the livery. That's because they give all the S-trains a new livery with red, black and white colours, similar to the DB corporate livery. A new depot is due to open in Hundige this March, where all trains will be painted, but yet no trains are currently fitted with the new livery

      @@ubahni they originally did only one to show off the new colours, but think only one more has been redone to match. At the current rate it will be years before there are enough of them to notice the change

      No it’s not, capacity is at max, speed could be faster, city center tunnel is a huge bottleneck, and frequency is terrible.

    Kind of cool to see the train starting by itself. You always see the train driver standing in the window looking back at the doors when the train starts moving, and nobody is in the drivers seat.

      untill sydney, australia introduced the double decker metro cars, these had the highest theoretical maximum line capacity, due to the system allowing for double train sets.

    Vesterport was the site of the first escalators in Denmark. Note the overhead rail in place of catenary wire. This is to provide resilience.

    Looks like the DSB subway cars do need some refurbishing, doesn't it? Both interior and exterior. Overall, I do like its design.

      yes some of the trains are rather worn out, destination signs on the trains have issues too as many are broken. refurbishment of s-trains along with new liveries are planned

      This is actually exactly what they're about to do. First an exterior refresh which all the trains will go through from now until 2025, and in the near future at a so far undetermined time, the exterior will also get refurbished.

      Yeah, all of DSB’s trains, besides the brand new Vectrons, need refurbishment, but new autonomous S trains are to replace these from 2030-2035. No S trains network in the world with this speed, size, and outdoor amount of tracks has ever been converted to atonomous trains, it will be quite the achievement, and a very ambitious project.

    For a country like Denmark, I’d say the overall railway infrastructure looks very poorly maintained and shabby. The stations look like they have zero maintenance and those absolutely disgusting and ugly graffitis make the trains look even worse!
    (I’m sure some proud Dane will come and disagree with me but I have seen and used it first hand - and feel free to compare your service with countries such as NL or DE and you’ll have your answer)!

      💯. As someone who lives here I am generally displeased with how most elevators stink and are visibly wet and sticky from urine and alcohol. This seems to be a general thing, also in NL and CH, but as opposed to those countries, Copenhagen does not seem to prioritize cleaning. The Vesterport station is loud and noisy due to (presumably) bad track maintenance (I'm happy I don't live next to the tracks), while the underground Nørreport St. is a living, claustrophobic nightmare during rush hour. The Metro stations, contrarily, seem to be very well maintained, generally speaking.

      @@hen-rex agreed that the metro infrastructure is quite well maintained but I guess that's also because its relatively new. Totally agree about the dirty and piss filled lifts. I use the C line and some of the stations in greater cph looks something out of 1970s!

      Yes sir they do. But you need to enter at the front of the train. The conductor will see you, come out and pull out the ramp for you. Then he ask when you want to get off, and when that station comes, he will once again come and pull down the ramp for you to exit on. Just be sure to wait where the front car of the train stops, so the conductor can spot you :D

      The new atonomous S-trains will have level boarding, as has DSB’s current Double decker wagons already, and their new Talgo wagons and Alstom Coradia Stream EMU’s will also have level boarding.

      They are going to repaint the entire fleet soon so they basically stopped maintaining the old livery a few months ago.

      They have 120+ trains to paint, so it takes a while. For now all the trains get stickers and whatever removed when they go into service, and are blasted down to the original paint, and then they're let back out to run until it's their turn to go into the paint shop. They're doing it without interrupting the service, which is why it takes so long.

      When will the US have efficient S train networks? Not ever i think, Brightline focuses on intercity and high speed rail, and Amtrak will struggle to establish new routes anytime soon, but hopefully some day.
