My mum got married in 1965 there. I was born at blk 58 in 1967 and then moved to blk 59 till late 1990s. Used to play at the nearby playground and feed the goats in the small farm nxt to the church .Wld go there in the afternoon and waited for the train to pass by and waved at the passengers. We knew our neighbours very well, from the entire block till the few blocks front and back. That's the 'kampung' I know, where there is no racial divide. We took care of one another and our doors are always open to guests
I studied at the Faith Methodist Kindergarten which is near Tanglin Halt when I was small. My parents brought us to the coffee shop in Tanglin Halt for sunday lunch. Oh, there's a wonton noodles store that always have a queue . I shall missthis store!

I’ve been living here since i was born for 14 years and had never known that the owners laksa and the duck stall were siblings 😌 we learn something new everyday huh? 😂
I grow up there i just move out 10 year ago ..tanglin halt very good place and happy place to stay when I was young ..the food there best of the best ..👍👍👍miss this place ..I love tanglin halt ✌️💗
used to stay at stirling road. went to tanglin technical school at tanglin halt. kids from tanglin tech used to love the ice kacang at the hawker centre. all will just be memories soon.......
I studied in the old Tanglin Technical School nearby in the 80s and used to play football at the basketball court there after school... everyday! good times!
Tanglin Tech moved to Clementi and was renamed Tanglin Sec. It subsequently merged with NTSS which moved to Dover campus from Commonwealth MRT in the late 90s.
many people who jumped at different blocks here and there, now and then. Mad n envious people now n then. Luckily moved out there, weird n creepy-crawlies characters moved into neighborhood.
@@louth1770 I did notice it went down some in the last 5 years or so. But I like these older townships with a central point and not a mall as the center point.
Me too I used to live at blk 48 Stirling Road and have been going to the tanglin Halt Market and there is the coffeeshop where this Indian stall selling mee siam super good delicious I never miss every weekend lol. BTW there is television artiste guy host SHARP show living in one of the block he purchased 2 units joined into one
Ruyi vegetarian was also there in 1960s and should be featured. It is one of the most popular stall in Tanglin Halt. Would love to hear their history as well. Used to live in Tanglin Halt in the 1960s and 70s at Block 52, and studied in Tanglin Primary School. My mum used to make me walk to the old market to buy the duck bee hoon, and also further up to buy the veg bee hoon. Both her favourites. I loved the unique carrot cake opposite the duck bee hoon in those days.
Used to stay here too. From 1969.....to ...1982. Tanglin Halt Blk 26. Permaisura pri sch was also there. church with goats near the railway tracks van houten ... setron ...was all there too will miss this place
was there n 1963 till 1976, primary at Tanglin Primary School (T.I.P.S) secondary at Queensway Sec. School (1972 till 1975) was in the school football team that won the National Junior Title, stayed at block 34, 9th floor. alot of fond memories, the former footballer Robert Sims stayed at block 33. Played football beside the flat. Goodbye Tanglin Halt..
Anyone remembers a catonese couple selling beef noodle during the 1970s? They liked to quarrel with each other when business was brisk and usually it was. Wonder if they moved to another location after they renovated the hawker centre? I think the renovation was a bad idea. Another one is the friend carrot cake, with tiny bits of mushroom. Anyone know whether he is still selling?
@@louth1770 The woman was quite short and worked fast, the husband always wearing a white t-shirt, they didnt quarrel loudly but always in a bad mood. Husband was very low profile and quite slow. Wonder what happened to this stall?
I moved to this neighborhood a few years ago. What really strikes me is how it reminds me of my primary school days when I lived in TPY. Friendly faces, kampung feel, slow pace of life. But lots of rats and roaches.
I live in Tiong Bahru for decades but after its upgrade about 20 years ago, I felt it lost a lot of charm and I preferred to actually come to this place and Queenstown area to get a break on weekend. Now even this is going..
is the hawker centre still around or demolished? strangely I felt like I've never been to this hawker centre . seeing this video, the food looks amazingly delicious. and hopefully hope the hawker centre is still around as would love to visit
花饼huey piang in this container when I eat as little kid too.. A place is lively because of it people with different business and bonding relationship and trust builted rooted over time of 30 to 50 years and just take decision maker as outsider without feeling, say must go must go.. 😔 😔 😔 ..
Same goes for margarate drive there used to be those lovely 4 storey flats with shops on the 1st floor. So sad to see both margarate drive and tanglin halt go. I used to live at commonwealth close. Now probably 16th storey left.
Noooo.....I figured with the upgrading, they would keep it...:( My childhood playground and I still go back every now and then for some of the food there.....the bakery that stood the competition of having a next door bakery ...:(
Nothing worth preserving, just move the same batch of retail operators, hawker to newer estates, time to tear down quickly, also older estates like Whampoa, Geylang Bahru, MacPherson, those 40+ years old blocks.
tear down entire town, make way for "what "type" of housing ? who will stay new housing? you know i know everyone know. meanwhile "destroying hawker centre one by one, while encouraging young sinkie to be hawker with latest TP course: Certificate in Hawkerpreneurship. Don be surprise if places like Kim Tian, Buffalo Road, Zion Road nearby having the same fate as Tanglin Halt.
All the old flats in prime central area will eventually get Enbloc, when the land value exceeds the collective value of the old flats significantly that's when Enbloc will happen, history has no value to this govt. Sad to say the new flats will be soulless.
My grandaunt used to stay in Block 33. With Tanglin Halt getting consigned to the history books, it's pointless now for route 61 to ply Commonwealth Drive (South).
Sometimes it is utterly sad that old estate utimately fate is demolishing, where in reality, there are senior living here over their lifetimes and get so rooted here like many other old estate, needing asking them to move..I am worried in some belief if old people move to another new place, how long will they live. There is some taboo on this. Actually old estate of hdb are build of better quality or brick and bigger size than now that why they can last longer and look firmer than new flat, only needing upgrading through painting or refurbishment only. Sometimes do not understand the root rationale of demolishing..these places so nostalgia in their own way with senior doing business so long.. Always sacrifice old senior rooted home for young development and ask them to move at this old age.. I feel sad for them honestly... Now only in memory for next generation..
How long has the building been around? Look im a Singaporean but not all things i know i barely travel to tanglin. I lived jurong all my life and yes i have been to other places in singapore once in awhile but i dont know how long has the building has been around, so if somebody can tell me how long it has been the building been around?
We can start a movement to preserve such places. The small enclave of Seletar Village was destroyed years back. I urge Dr Leslie Tay to start the movement n I will jump in. Many good historical sites are being taken down. The nice five story building at the junction of Yio Chu Kang n Seletar road was demolished too. Lots of area will go if we do not raise concerns. Yes we need new developments which can incorporate with the old, a good example is Bugis Junction where the new buildings were built over the old shop houses. Albert street for example.
They tear down the flat never mind, but the surrounding shops and market shouldn't tear down. Cos not like any of the new HDB development have sufficient amenities or know how to design. I'm sure the people who bought the BTO don't want to go hungry like those in Punggol and Sengkang. We want more markets and town centres. And even you can build the hardware, you can replace the software?
I shifted frm Tanglin Halt to Pasir Ris whn SERS started like 3 years ago. Lived ther fr 18 years. Its jst nt the same. Will definitely miss the kampong spirit ther.. the vendors/marketers are really the ones tht make living ther so desirable. We see n chatting thm evryday..Nt enough $$ no problem..jst take 1st pay later 😅 .. n free vegs n fishes smtimes.. 10 or 20 cents worth of curry or pandan leaves, it's ok.. no charge.. We certainly wont b able to experience living like tht again. Btw..I hate the Pasir Ris market..its horrible. It's so small n crowded, jst a row of shop houses with a narrow 5' walkway. I dread going marketing ther. Tanglin Halt market is alot spacious n airy. Bye bye Tanglin Halt. Will visit u fr 1 last time soon. 😥😪😢😭
Agreed. The modern hawker centres can't compare to the old ones. The old hawker centres have tastier and cheaper food, whereas the food in new hawker centres are all the same inferior taste and more expensive. People living in new towns will understand, the food suck so bad until you've to travel to mature towns for a proper meal.
Ther is no such thing as walk down memory lane in Singapore. Evrything gt torn down. Frm kampong n thn flat still hv to move. I'm frm blk 66 Tanglin Halt. So so sad to see its finally gonna b taken down. Seen quite a few local shops close down whn ShengSiong started operating. Then, it ws already killing small time shopkeepers n marketeers. I felt sorry fr thm..n I'l definitely buy frm thm instead of ShengSiong. As such, we build strong bonds, local vendors n me. Whn I shifted to Costa Ris after the en-bloc, u cant get tht same feeling in the new location. Thers no veg seller tht will throw in few bunches of vegs in yr basket fr free..or throw in 1 or 2 fishes extra..brush off 10 or 20 cents worth of curry leaves, or few pandan leaves. All tht is gone.. the hairdressers, the alteration shop, tht bakery tht bake fresh bread. I love the French bread. I use to order like 20pcs whenever I go to melaka as my aunties love it too. My God, too many fond memories, I'm crying. I still go to my letterbox to chk my mails n I'l go up to my unit jst to take a look. Nobody lives ther since I moved. N I'l walk around the neighbourhood, chat a little with whoever shopkeepers thts still ther. My next marketing will b at Tanglin Halt market soon b4 its bye bye for good. 😪
For the sake of progress if it truly is the old must go. Nothing in this world last forever. An era of basic needs, friendship & relationship comes to an end.
Wait a minute Leslie, your wife sent you out to get her some peanut pancakes. You had your share but didn't pick up any for her and the stall was closing up for the day! I noticed that you were touring around the area withOUT a take away bag in your hand.
i've notice a few times that english subtittle for a few youtube documentary videos has been spelt or written wrongly.hope that whoever the person who writes the subtittle rectify the issues cause this could confuse young learning kids.
I’m Singapore’s largest video game collector. You will be amazed by my collection the moment you step into my house! Truly, there’s A LOT to talk bout myself n’ gaming. In a nutshell, I’m going to move from Tanglin Halt to my new ‘Sky Palace’ in just a few months time. It’s a pity CNA failed to feature me. :pp
In Singapore the official textbook and work language for Chinese is mandarin (aka putonghua or zhongwen depending on other countries) Hokkien, Cantonese, teochew, hakka are the main dialects spoken in Singapore. But sadly they are not picked up by many younger generations now so it's not surprising someone from the dialect does not speak it now.
The one who do the subtitles were so funny...Tangling Halt can become Tangling Hot. .can the person who do the subtitles...please listen carefully...and spell properly..same with other titles on most videos ..misspelt the words..
of course build condo here, than gov can earn $$$$$ by the sales of land.gov only interested in $$$$$ they see people as $$$$ to pay their fat pay check.Future development don`t be surprised majority will be forginers renting the condo that surely will be built here.
They should have kept Forfar House as a heritage building. It was the first high rise in the suburb, IIRC. The 7-storey flats at Dakota Cres have gone the way of the dodo. Now Tanglin Halt is getting levelled. Sad end.

Lots of area will go if we do not raise concerns. Yes we need new developments which can incorporate with the old, a good example is Bugis Junction where the new buildings were built over the old shop houses.
Albert street for example.
Seletar estate demolished and everyone resettled in Fernvale.
that auntie, i met her several times.
Eaxctly! Modernize the houses but leave the heart of Tanglin Halt intact.
@@mariamaria7796 apparently they hawker center they going replace it with a tiny 40 stall Hawker centre at the Margaret Drive

look forward to renewal...it is not a bad thing
For the sake of progress if it truly is the old must go. Nothing in this world last forever. An era of basic needs, friendship & relationship comes to an end.
Grew up there...still go back to eat monthly
Have they moved out?
Usually the museum there is no one there
Better life is based on some losses
Can I still go there now?
Yes but everything will dissapear end March
how come the host not wearing mask??
I remember my aunty who used to stay at blk. 13. Used to go there when I was 15 yeare old. Now I am a old lady.

My secondary school was there:. Tanling Technical School
Is the school still there? I used to live at the 16 storey, blk 81 😊
Wow! The sch no longer exist.
Everything is impermanence. We should not attached to people, places, possessions and ideas.
Yup,,n die fast less pain too

Very wise view.batch by batch,we will be gone .🙂
I’m Singapore’s largest video game collector. You will be amazed by my collection the moment you step into my house! Truly, there’s A LOT to talk bout myself n’ gaming. In a nutshell, I’m going to move from Tanglin Halt to my new ‘Sky Palace’ in just a few months time. It’s a pity CNA failed to feature me. :pp
I have a question. When the people speak Chinese is it Mandarin? Hokien? Cantonese?
mandarin
In Singapore the official textbook and work language for Chinese is mandarin (aka putonghua or zhongwen depending on other countries)
Hokkien, Cantonese, teochew, hakka are the main dialects spoken in Singapore. But sadly they are not picked up by many younger generations now so it's not surprising someone from the dialect does not speak it now.
some older hawker still speak dialect to old customers.
The one who do the subtitles were so funny...Tangling Halt can become Tangling Hot. .can the person who do the subtitles...please listen carefully...and spell properly..same with other titles on most videos ..misspelt the words..
Commonwealth driver never forget...
Shouldn’t they wear masks? Ridiculous walking around without masks while the residents are wearing them.
Give a break please about masks.
My question is, why is the Dr and some other people featured, can walk around and talk close to each other without wearing the mask?! Hmmmm....
Give it a break.

of course build condo here, than gov can earn $$$$$ by the sales of land.gov only interested in $$$$$ they see people as $$$$ to pay their fat pay check.Future development don`t be surprised majority will be forginers renting the condo that surely will be built here.
dr wife very nice
The place/flats look really outdated and old. Time for a refresh of the estate. It is not national monument or heritage please.
They should have kept Forfar House as a heritage building. It was the first high rise in the suburb, IIRC.
The 7-storey flats at Dakota Cres have gone the way of the dodo. Now Tanglin Halt is getting levelled. Sad end.
Another mistake by Singapore. Those items cannot be got back.Plus the kampung spirit will be lost.No need to redevelop.
11:20 cb u singaporean dont potato man
No need to wear masks while filming? :p
Please lah. Don't overreact.
I think some scenes are before the pandemic
