Sometimes I compromise between the two by making a quick drum track with a tambourine only hitting on the 4 and 8 (or just the 8) so I can still be natural but return it back to sort of back in time.
Something I've always done, regardless of the DAW I'm using. I find click tracks and metronomes to be nothing but an unwanted distraction. It's as bad as having someone talking to me while I'm playing/recording.
Pete Johns Yep, me, too. In fact, I would simply use a drum track, to begin with, and have the click track and metronome turned off, if possible. I have noticed, though, that with it enabled, it will only count in 4 bars and then stop, while the drummer goes on. But, then I run into that silly looping problem, also.
Pete Johns Hmmm....I don't know, Pete. I'm beginning to think Auria Pro might be the thing to use, now. I shouldn't have to be spending time and energy making up for a DAW's weirdness instead of making music.
Interesting. When I play acoustic to virtual drummer my songs usually do feel to mechanical. I experiment with using light or heavy swing on the virtual drummer and that sometimes helps.
Yes, good point! A little swing can help it sound more natural. I’m usually a fan of the grid but really wanted to try to make this have as much feeling as possible, and just couldn’t get it with a click.
I am desperate to learn how to do this, but you didn’t get around to talking about the additional tracks Can you tell me something about how to add an extra track in ribatto ?
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for the reply Pete I think this is the term for free time in classical music In any case as I am myself working on a process of composition without using the grid or metronome, I would love to hear your thoughts on how you would have added extra tracks to a freely recorded passage I am working this out in garage band with a lot of cutting and moving notes to line up with the first track I think that the grid takes away so much of the life of a piece of music
Can you take the metronome out of a recorded track in Garageband? I used the metronome to lay down the beginning guitar track and it really stands out in that track, how do I delete the metronome out of that track?
Nope, rubato means “stolen” So technically you still have actual time, but a note can “steal” time from the next so technically you go faster and then slower The proper term for no tempo is AD LIBITUM
Thanks so much for this video, I learned how to improve the sound of my guitar while recording. :) I do have a question: how can I use a metronome while recording, but don't want the clicking sound to appear in the actual recording. How can I time myself better so I wouldn't have to do much editing in Garageband afterwards? Many thanks, and keep up the great work! Cheers, Arthur
Hey Arthur. So, if you use headphones you should be able to avoid most of the audio bleed including metronome. ua-cam.com/video/EcI1tPC4P34/v-deo.html&feature=shares
I'm having the worst time trying to learn to play Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" on the piano along with the metronome. The syncopation in my left hand ALWAYS causes me to rush the tempo. The right hand is straight 8th notes, so it isn't difficult at all. You can change the tempo in GarageBand (It think) and Logic Pro X on a Mac, so you can speed up and slow down to your heart's content. I'm always worried about my timing being too perfect on my recordings, so your experiment is definitely a great idea.
Haha! I tried learning that about 20 years ago and remember giving up in frustration. 😄 It sounds like it should be so easy to play.... until you try to play it!!
@@PeteJohnsMusic I'm also learning it using octaves in my left hand, which makes it more difficult to find my place on the keyboard. I'm not going to give up, though. At least for now.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Almost clean and at tempo on the verses. Last night I started the chorus and the turnaround. The chorus switches the 8th notes to the left hand and half notes in the right.
Hello, I’m sorry this is quite off topic but you know how if you place a midi file in garage band, you can change the instrument? Well is it possible to change the instrument from the midi file to a sound from the sampler? Or could I use a .wav or .mp3 file for the instrument?
Hey there. So, not directly in GarageBand to my knowledge. You can ya he instruments for a MIDI track, but I don’t think you can use a sample to replace the instrument?
Very helpful! Been trying to figure this out for a while as we have a few songs that gradually slow down over the course of several measures and then eventually pick back up again. In some cases, would you record the song in several pieces so you're on the grid for the 'simple' parts but come off for those sections in which the tempo is changing? Thank you!
If you were recording this as a singer playing a guitar, would you record this with the guitar and vocal with their own tracks...2 tracks at once. Or record it like you just did. I see someone using this recording technique to just play the song till you get it right. Recording a practice session. Sometimes you nail it.
I am literally tossing this exact question up right now. We will both find out tomorrow. I think I might need to end up getting a second mic involved and recording both at once, just to get the right feel. What do you think?
@@PeteJohnsMusic I would have come at it with the acoustic/electric plugged in on one channel and the vocal on another through the UR12. Two tracks at once. I don't know if that's the better way. It sounded good with just the one track the way you did it. More flexibility with the 2 tracks but a different sound. I just thought when the video started oh, he'll do it this way but then you did it that way. You can get there different ways. I loved watching you move through your recording process. I'm hooking up a mouse. But another question: You've piqued my interest...best way to just have an open-ended practice session or trying to nail a good take given multiple chances at it...just letting the recording run.
Yeah.... like that option? And might try it today when I record actually. With no bar markers to worry about you can pretty much just “roll tape” and then find the best take afterwards? 🤔
I am subscribed and love your channel. I’ve been stumbling with this one... So I should be able to play and record multiple tracks without the metronome adding my own instruments vocals at various speeds and it should come out as in sync as close as I can make it Thanks again Pete...

Hey Pete, the video is leading people to think that boosting the sound in your DAW will not boost the noise, but it will. This is very well explained here: ua-cam.com/video/beXVfl1TSD0/v-deo.html What is important is work on your signal to noise ratio, not on limiting the usage of your gain. For me also what made a huge difference is switching to an interface that was producing very little noise on its own.
