Brentford still had hope that they could pinch a Europa Conference spot and came into the game in fine form, so this - on the back of a tiring midweek test at Brighton - was never going to be easy for the Premier League champions.
And so it proved.
In a game of few chances, Cole Palmer could have put City ahead early on and, after the home side scored the opening goal five minutes from time, Palmer had two bites at goal from close range without joy.
