I couldn't have said it better myself! In this video, you touched upon all the reasons why this is one of my fave entries. I just love how pissed off Kane plays Jason, in this one!! Especially when he bursts through the door & hurls future Jason, Ken Kerzinger, into that glass. So badass!! I will go into my grave defending part 8.
My favorite Friday films are the ones that everyone else seems to hate the most, with the exception of Jason goes to hell; that one is rough. I love Jason Takes Manhattan. I think it’s incredible.
I remember the "I ❤ NY!" Jason poster in the video store. I love the absurd amount of teleportations, the Times Square scene, the diner, and the boxing on the roof scenes.
I always thought being stuck on a cruise ship with Jason was far scarier than being in the woods or New York. Plus I always loved the big hulking heavy breathing Jason featured in 7 and 8. As far is the movies go Jason Lives is the best IMO.
The irony is that Kane Hodder is the smallest of all the actors to play Jason. He’s like 5’11. All the others before him were taller hulking stuntmen - 6’2 (Steve Dash) 6’3 (Richard Brooker), and 6’4 (Ted White and CJ Graham).
"Jason Takes Manhattan" was on in the break room at work one day, I think it was around the 4th of July or something. I'm glad someone kept it on, and didn't turn it off. Lots of memorable scenes in this one, and it's just fun!
Its far from awful in every way....I give a shit about how he got from Crystal Lake to the ship...Its always been hilarious to me when people cry about that in a Friday the 13th movie, where a guy who died 4 sequels before this movie was still around killing people.......Its entertaining for what it is.
When I was a kid my friends and I used to adore the Friday 13th films and on our trips to the video store at the weekend for a big pile of horror, there was always and I mean always a Friday 13th in our selection, and we rented part 8 the most often
I’m 35, so when I watched Jason kill that boxer when I was a kid, that taught me a valuable life lesson. That’s to never try to fight Jason, he’ll knock my head off with one punch 🤣🤷🏻♂️
I have always liked this one and never got the hate, I don’t mind that its on a ship. At least its a different setting. And at least he got to NY, they could have left it on a cliffhanger without a followup
@@alienboy1322 Then you clearly don't understand how business actually works......When a movie series starts to have diminishing returns a good business either stops making them, or lowers the budget.....Friday part VII made 19 on 2.5 million, Jason Lives made the same thing, Jason Takes Manhattan already had twice that with a 5 million dollar budget. There is no universe where a smart business would give someone 10 million to make a movie that generally got 2-3 million
The I ❤ NY posters were all over NYC that year. They were on all the bus stops and as soon as they went up, they would get stolen. It was the ultimate hype and the ultimate let down. We wouldn't have been so disappointed if the movie had a different title.
This one is also one of my favs or most watched anyways. Always liked the music in this. The scene when the group of escaped students are in the raft and they are floating in the Pacific and suddenly in the dark of night they see the Stature of Liberty is so epic. The feeling of everything will be ok is near but really they are just starting their next chapter on land. Also big shout out for Vancouver doubling in for New York!!!
Finally... Someone that sees Jason V for what he is. The true form of horror slasher, and not a family circle of chasing and killing. Just a hardcore, dyed in the wool, cast of evil, killer. Jason is my favorite slasher by far.
Jason has a lot of black Sheep. Part 5, Part 7 (Depending on who you ask) Goes to Hell, X, Generally if it's not 1, 2, 4, or 6 people generally think it's shit.
I hated this movie hard when it came out. It's still terrible. Not as good as 5, but maybe better than JGTH, a couple of other black sheep in the franchise.
I am so happy to see this video! I absolutely LOVE Jason Takes Manhattan and I get so tired if seeing it trashed so hard when something like Jason Goes To Hell exists. I swear if they had just named it "Jason Rides a Boat" people wouldn't give it such a hard time but they want to harp on how little time is spent in the city and ignore that it is a really solid Friday film.
No its not, its the most borderline pg13 film in the series. It takes place mostly in Vancouver. Not new York and it completely is the slowest film of the series with one of the longest run times. Jason lives so much better and this pile of crap ruined that momentum.
I always wondered why there isn’t a supernatural slasher apocalyptic movie. One where the slasher/monster destroys pretty much an entire population and there’s little resistance left
Jason Takes Manhattan is my favorite Friday The 13th movie. I think it’s the most creative one. And even though they were only in New York for like 30 minutes it was still so impactful.
I completely agree with you, Lance. Part 8 is sooo fun. I love the posters for it. Jason gripping the city with one hand and the knife in the other with those awesome colors for ambiance bouncing of him is wonderful. The I ❤ NY poster is nothing short of brilliant. Part 8 holds a special place in my heart. lol It was the first Friday flick I purchased as a kid on VHS with my own money. Regardless of all it's flaws I think it is just as fun as any entry in the series. There's definitely something special about the 80s Paramount run with the first 8 movies in the franchise. The New Line films have their own style and aura that I can appreciate despite the quality of them. No matter what, it's safe to say we all enjoy Jason wreaking havoc in any form or setting. Love the Black Sheep series, Lance! I'd give this 2 thumbs up 👍 if I could. Thanks for the post!
Jason Vorhees is also my all time favorite horror villain. I wonder if we're the same age because I remember the Power Rangers pretty well too and I also thought Jason was cool as a kid. Lol!
Before I had watched the whole series, this was my long standing favorite. It has a bad reputation, but it’s still IMHO a great entry to the series. It bugs me that the childhood Jason’s appearance is never consistent. And the scene where Jason is unmasked at the end is, well just plain bad. I still can say I enjoy this movie.
Great video! funny enough the first Friday the 13th I ever saw was part 8 when I was maybe 2-3 and I also was never scared of Jason and thought he was cool and reminded me of lord Zedd, and when I saw Jason X that further cemented that connection for me lol
Watching this at 3AM as a kid at my buddies house, Julian punching the hell out of Jason only to have his head blasted off is one of those scenes ingrained into my head. It's up there with the sleeping bag kill. Rewatching this a couple years ago, blew my mind to see Kelly Hu. I had a crush on her from the 2000 X-Men movie.
I never really understood why many people don’t like part 8, although I agree with some of the criticisms. I would erase part 9 from our memories and for my part I also find 'space Jason' ridiculous (Jason X), although it’s still better than part 9.
I was 7 years old when I saw Part 2 for the first time on HBO. Scared the hell out of me when Jenny says, "Paul, there's someone in this room." Also, gunnysack Jason is more frightening than Hockey Masked Jason.
Cheap and Greasy is exactly what is needed from time to time. I like that you keep insisting that people arent having fun with movies anymore - so true.
I'm a fan of the franchise, but will fully admit that this entry is crap. The problem with him teleporting is it completely removed the tension, the pacing is really bad, the ending makes no sense and he looks more comical that scary with his mask off.
We are all inclined to our own opinions but Jason takes Vancouver fucking sucks. This movie has nothing good to offer save for ol boy getting falcon punched. This is no black sheep this is rock bottom Friday.
It's astonishingly bad, the only notable thing about it is that it had very young Kelly Hu who grew to become much bigger name in Hollywood only couple of years later. Also I prefer to call this movie "Jason takes the boat" but to each his own I guess. At least they didn't send him to space. Right?
There's really no such thing as a good Friday the 13th movie, but most of them have a certain kind of guilty pleasure charm to them. Jason takes a boat ride is definitely one of them.
No there is definitely such a thing as a good Friday the 13th movie........Movies don't have to be fucking Shakespeare or Johnny Got His Gun to be good, a movie can without a doubt just be good and entertaining
I totally agree that Jason was a cool badass monster who killed anyone in his way in so many cool ways but he was never scary to me. Freddy Krueger on the other hand gave me nightmares! Still to this day at 33 years old I'll occasionally have a Freddy nightmare!
I have to give you credit Lance, you always defend the " shit shows" and usually, I don't know how you do it. But this one, I have to back you on. I liked this film and Jason is also my favorite. Kudos! Dan
This was awesome. It's been a while since I seen Manhattan. Great video I'll watch it this weekend. Love the Chicago tie ins. I rate this vid 4 red 6 pointed stars!
Happy somebody said it. I always loved this movie. Never understood the hate. I don’t wanna hear about it barely being in NY. Stop crying 😭 Still a fire movie IMO 🔥🔥🔥
My only gripe with this entry was I disliked the lead actress. But then I disliked most of them except for the ones from Parts 1,2,and 6.Kelly Hu should've been the lead as I felt she was a better actress.
Say what you want to say about Jason X but at least most of that took place in outer space unlike this movie when you have less than five minutes in Manhattan actually. So the name of this movie should be Jason Takes The Love Boat. Although when I first saw this movie when it first came out when I was in high school. I did think Kelly Hu was cute.
@@krisorgan I appreciate Jason X for just saying "Oh you are still squabbling on the Freddy vs Jason movie? Well fuck it were going to do the dumbest thing possible, we're going to space".
Kane Hodder says that one of the most fun parts of his tenure as Jason were the scenes in Times Square. He says that spectators were lined up and down the block watching the filming and he didn't want to take off the mask to destroy their illusion of Jason. He said that every once in awhile he'd turn his head and look at them and watch them all go crazy. According to an interview in Fangoria Magazine (August 1989), Kane Hodder vomited on cue in the final scene after drinking several pitchers of water. This was not a special effect. Despite the nature of the film and adverse filming conditions, Kane Hodder provided several moments of levity which were appreciated by the cast. Following several death scenes, for example, once director Rob Hedden called "cut," Hodder would do a brief disco dance in full Jason costume and make-up making the cast laugh. Rob Hedden originally wrote more of the movie to be set in New York. He had written scenes at Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. But despite the fact that this film had the highest budget of a Friday the 13th movie at the time ($5 million), Paramount told him that there wasn't enough money to film so many scenes in New York, so he was forced to rewrite the film and spend more time on the cruise ship; at around 1h 28 mins) In the diner the man Jason throws into the mirror is Ken Kirzinger who would go on to play Jason in Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Kirzinger also doubles as Jason in a few brief shots in this film. At 100 minutes this is the longest running time of the Friday The 13th films. Many of the actors pointed out to themselves a plot hole earlier in the filming of the movie: they wondered how the ship got out of Crystal Lake and into the Atlantic Ocean. Since most of them were just happy to be in a film they didn't bring it up to the producers or director. Actor Vincent Craig Dupree was quoted in an interview about the plot hole saying "this damn boat could have come from the Sahara Desert and gotten into the Atlantic". "I don't care, I'm not gonna challenge the concept". After this film's disappointing results at the box-office, Paramount decided to sell the rights to the Jason Voorhees character (though not the Friday the 13th film series) to New Line Cinema. This makes "Jason Takes Manhattan" the last feature produced by Paramount until the 2009 remake Friday the 13th (2009), which was possible because they still had the rights to the first eight movies. New Line released only three other sequels (Jason Goes to Hell (1993), Jason X (2001) and Freddy vs. Jason (2003)) in between. at around 55 mins) In the scene where Jason reaches through the porthole and grabs Rennie, Jensen Daggett was reportedly really terrified. Her face was just inches from a large and very sharp piece of glass that had become stuck in the window frame and the actor who played Jason was (unknowingly) pulling her toward it. In the original script, when Jason makes it to the dock, a dog starts barking at him and he kicked it. Kane Hodder, who was playing Jason, felt that kicking the dog was going too far so the scene was dropped. Due to negative feedback from fans and director Rob Hedden himself, as the film wasn't what he wanted it to be, he has repeatedly apologized to any fans who were disappointed by the film, such as in the Blu-ray and DVD audio commentary, and has since disowned the film. The next films (produced by another studio) also conveniently ignore the events of this movie. Of the female leads (all the girls are supposed to be graduated from high school), only Jensen Daggett was one of the few actresses who was actually a teenager and was 19 years old at the time of shooting. During production many of the cast and crew began calling the movie "Jason Takes Vancouver." This is because Vancouver doubled for New York in various scenes due to budgetary reasons, as Paramount refused to budget the extensive filming locations in New York. Except for two days of filming in Times Square, all of the scenes in the docks, sewer, alleys, and the diner were filmed in Vancouver. The original posters for the film featured Jason ripping through an "I Love NY" poster. In the first poster Jason is holding a bloody knife which was cleaned in a second poster for fear that the blood was too graphic. Both posters were dropped following a complaint from the New York Tourism Committee. The only Friday the 13th film to have a blooper reel on DVD and Blu-Ray. at around 1h 24 mins) In the subway, when Jason is chasing Rennie and Sean, Sean pulls the emergency brake to knock Jason back. On the poster to right of Sean sprawled in graffiti are the words "Jason Lives," which is the subtitle of the sixth 'Friday the 13th' film: Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) In keeping with series tradition, a David Bowie song, "Ashes to Ashes", was used as the movie's fake title. This working title was used while filming in New York City to avoid fan interruptions, and was also used in the script to prevent auditioning actors from knowing and revealing what film they were making. In the fake-titled script, Jason was renamed Ethan. (at around 1h 10 mins) Vincent Craig Dupree actually cut his hand in the phone booth when Jason shatters the glass around him. Peggy Hedden, the New York waitress, is the sister of the film's director Rob Hedden. Feature film debut of actress Kelly Hu, who plays Eva. She is the first Asian character in the series. During the opening credits featuring New York City's Time Square a huge Batman (1989) poster is clearly visible. Filming of these scenes took place during the promotional campaign of Tim Burton's first Batman film, starring Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton. The cruise ship is named Lazarus, which is the name of a biblical character who was brought back from the dead, just like Jason comes back from the dead. The studio was looking for a Canadian actor to play Jason for the role. Ken Kirzinger was considered to play Jason. Kane Hodder was determined to convince Paramount to hire him again but to his surprise, they felt he wouldn't be interested to reprise his role. Ken would instead play Kane's stunt double in the movie and eventually would replace Kane in Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Canadian makeup artist Bill Terezakis also worked on both movies as well. Many fans disliked Jason's unmasking in this as it was deemed unconvincing and unintimidating. One of only three Friday the 13th movies not to be scored by Harry Manfredini. Both the debut theatrical feature film directed by Rob Hedden as well as being Hedden's first produced cinema movie screenplay. The dog Toby is named after a dog the director once had. Rennie's dog Toby is a Border Collie Scott Reeves is another soap star in a Friday The 13th film (Y&R) and is married in real life to fellow soap star Melissa Reeves (Jennifer Horton on DAYS) who for many years before meeting Scott, dated Tom Fridley (Cort in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)). The flaregun Charles uses is a Webley & Scott No. 1 Mk. III. The disco club scene where Eva is killed by Jason on the cruise ship was a leftover scene from the original script, where this scene would take place in a glitzy New York Nightclub instead. The film and its characters don't reach New York until the last half hour into the runtime. (at around 48 mins) This is the first movie in the series where Jason kills one of his victims by strangulation. Body count: 20. Jim Miller, Suzi Donaldson, JJ Barrett, Boxing Guy, Tamara Mason, First Officer, Admiral Robertson, Ship Crew Member, Wayne Webber, Eva Watanabe, Miles Wolfe, Deck Hand, Holmes, JoJo, Julius Gaw, Police Officer, Colleen Van Duesen, Charles McCullough, Bartender and Sewer Worker oh, and the whole graduating class, too. The prologue of the film foreshadows all the places that Jason will chase the teenagers: downtown with the gang members, the diner, the alley with the drug addicts, and the subway.
This is like my 3rd fave in the franchise. It was so goofy its godly. Plus that metropolis song is killer! Still doesn't make sense how he got the boat onto the actual seas, from Crystal lake...but I digress
I'm 46 years old. Alyssa Milano was my first love, but Amy Jo Johnson was absolutely my 2nd❤ I was 4 years old when my older sister introduced me to horror, with the first 3 HalloweeN & Friday The 13th films on HBO in '82. Kinda desensitized me to horror.
It's not my favorite Friday, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it. Hell, for all 1980's Jason movies. Sure, I wish the film had more NY in it, but other than that I never got the hate for it. Part VIII surely is a lot better than the New Line movies that came after it.
My only problem with part 8 is the ending. Should have had the sewage just flush jason out to sea and have the final girl go home which sets up part 9 Homecoming!!
The end was my only issue with the film. Having Renny seeing Jason as a little boy instead of showing the result of his toxic waste bath was a letdown. Also, The huge continuity error of the other graduates vanishing after the beginning of the film.
The Darkest Side of Night is the greatest good bye song to the 80s along with Jason Takes Manhattan being the last good bye to no intentional campiness of the slasher genre.
Friday the 13th VIII is a double feature: Jason’s Nautical Carnage is a mediocre flick with subpar kills. Jason Takes Manhattan is what I was expecting and it’s a lot fun.

It is a bad movie, but it is fun. Its as close to as zero as you can get in terms of quality, but I can still have fun with it.
This is one of the best videos y’all have ever done
80's baby here. Oddly, this is one of the few F13 movies I remember from back in the day.
It also had that amazing ending credits song too!
My only gripe with this entry was I disliked the lead actress. But then I disliked most of them except for the ones from Parts 1,2,and 6.Kelly Hu should've been the lead as I felt she was a better actress.
Saw this at the theater on opening day.
Part 8 was the first f13 movie I ever saw and still love it to this day. Flaws and all
This guy gets it. Great vid. Supernatural Jason is the best one.
Jason x was absolute garbage, as was Jason takes Manhattan but, if I had to pick one it would be jtm.
@@krisorgan I appreciate Jason X for just saying "Oh you are still squabbling on the Freddy vs Jason movie? Well fuck it were going to do the dumbest thing possible, we're going to space".
I enjoy Jason X. I've never liked Takes Manhattan at all.
I don't often agree with the entire internet, but if I ever did, I would like Ed Harris to speak for us.
Kimberly was def a part of me discovering teenage feelings
Part 8 is my second favorite in the series behind part 2.
Thank you for this
0:58 nailed it bro lol I was in love with Amy jo Johnson as a kid, I still remember her real name that’s how serious it was lol
Came here for the Jason content, stayed because he recognized my first crush as well.
Rob Hedden originally wrote more of the movie to be set in New York. He had written scenes at Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. But despite the fact that this film had the highest budget of a Friday the 13th movie at the time ($5 million), Paramount told him that there wasn't enough money to film so many scenes in New York, so he was forced to rewrite the film and spend more time on the cruise ship;
at around 1h 28 mins) In the diner the man Jason throws into the mirror is Ken Kirzinger who would go on to play Jason in Freddy vs.
On the poster to right of Sean sprawled in graffiti are the words "Jason Lives," which is the subtitle of the sixth 'Friday the 13th' film: Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
In keeping with series tradition, a David Bowie song, "Ashes to Ashes", was used as the movie's fake title.
Rennie's dog Toby is a Border Collie
Scott Reeves is another soap star in a Friday The 13th film (Y&R) and is married in real life to fellow soap star Melissa Reeves (Jennifer Horton on DAYS) who for many years before meeting Scott, dated Tom Fridley (Cort in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)).
Thanks for copying that from IMDB
This is like my 3rd fave in the franchise. It was so goofy its godly. Plus that metropolis song is killer! Still doesn't make sense how he got the boat onto the actual seas, from Crystal lake...but I digress
Oh man.... Kimberly. 😂
This was my entry Friday film. It's a pretty good movie to start from when you're young, it's got all the cliches you don't know yet!
I'm 46 years old. Alyssa Milano was my first love, but Amy Jo Johnson was absolutely my 2nd❤
I was 4 years old when my older sister introduced me to horror, with the first 3 HalloweeN & Friday The 13th films on HBO in '82. Kinda desensitized me to horror.
I love Jason Takes Manhattan. My only issue with it is the lack of ..... well.... Jason in.... Manhattan.....
In Jason we trust! (*Not you reboot Jason)
It's not my favorite Friday, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it. Hell, for all 1980's Jason movies. Sure, I wish the film had more NY in it, but other than that I never got the hate for it. Part VIII surely is a lot better than the New Line movies that came after it.
This is as bad as part 5, Jason X Nightmare part 2& 5&6, Halloween 5/6, 8 and all Hellraiser movies outside of 1-4
...I love Highland 2. I get it.
My only problem with part 8 is the ending. Should have had the sewage just flush jason out to sea and have the final girl go home which sets up part 9 Homecoming!!
This was my first Horror movie and I watched it brand new as a young kid. It scared the ever living crap out of me.
I’m with you on that! Loved this movie. I rewatch this more than any!
The end was my only issue with the film. Having Renny seeing Jason as a little boy instead of showing the result of his toxic waste bath was a letdown. Also, The huge continuity error of the other graduates vanishing after the beginning of the film.
I also love this movie. The kills were too censored, and the ending could've been better, but overall, a solid entry
This one is my favorites cuz it has the best chase scenes and felt the most 80s to me
I'm with ya, this is my favorite one as well
The Darkest Side of Night is the greatest good bye song to the 80s along with Jason Takes Manhattan being the last good bye to no intentional campiness of the slasher genre.
i was 3 when i started watching Evil Dead II, Friday the 13th, Childs Play, Hellrasier, Nightmare on elm street
thanx mama
Friday the 13th VIII is a double feature:
Jason’s Nautical Carnage is a mediocre flick with subpar kills.
Jason Takes Manhattan is what I was expecting and it’s a lot fun.
glad i'm not the only one that likes this movie lol. i always had fun with this one. plus i love doing voiceovers for jason when im watching by myself lol.
Jason Goes to Hell and the 2009 Remake both made me love Part 8 more
I like this movie too. I know I shouldn't but I always loved it as a kid.
I thought I was the only Person Alive who Thought LORD ZED reminded me of Jason
