"Watch hours of 240p videos explaining how to do manual targeting in another language" - You're so real for this. I have spent a nearly equal amount of time watching tutorials with bad mic quality as what I have in game.
One issue I have with the game is that the enemy escorts know that you are the only submarine out there. When attacking convoys, ALL the escorts se to gang up on your U-Boat, which would never happen in the real war because it would leave the convoy vulnerable to other potential U-Boats in the area.
There is a little cheat written into the code that accounts for this. When you score a hit or if your torpedo is spotted, the AI reverse engineers the torpedo course to account for your location. It is not completely flawless, but it is accurate enough. The player can take advantage of this by firing shots and evading immediately, knowing the AI will only backtrack the torpedo's course and bang away with active sonar. If you are close enough to the convoy target ships, you can do what Erich Topp did and wear one of the untargeted ships as a hat to protect yourself from the escorts. If you are close enough to a sinking ship, the noise of the collapsing bulkheads can mask you, too.
The new UBOAT game on steam introduces other AI uboats. Nothing as thrilling as lining up an attack on a convoy and all of a sudden all the escorts break off to attack the other uboat(s). Watching that and I'm like JACKPOT BABY. Totally changes the tone of the game, feels much more 'alive' than SH.
I remember the time I managed to sneak up on a British convoy off the coast of Scotland. I got into position and waited, remembering the tutorials and guides. I was in a Type 2 (can't remember which exact model) so I only had 3 fish ready to go. I fired the torpedoes, and watched as they missed, I went and checked my crew management, I forgot to assign any crew to the bow torpedoes. Immediately the convoy escorts zeroed in on my sub and began dropping depth charges, cue me choosing evasive maneuvers and silent running. After 2 hours, the corvettes decided they were done. I limped back to my home port of Kiel. God I love this game.
@@Anzei_Kazumi agreed good sir, I personally enjoy the narrow escapes from the depth charges by just yanking the rudder left or right. I love the cat and mouse aspect of the sh3. Its late here but I might just fire the game back up.
You sir have made my day brighter! Ah, yes I remember playing Silent Hunter III for the first time, many a depth charge struck my boat in the early patrols as I made the mistake of playing my first round in 1944 and was finally sunk by a British Sunderland flying boat when I foolishly thought it was a good idea to try a duel it with my flak guns....Ah, memories. Trying to find a way to get Silent Hunter 1 to see where this legendary game series started.
Man, God speed to ya, never played Silent Hunter 1 but I have been utterly obliterated by a Sunderland when I left port in 1944 for the first time. I'm happy that you enjoyed the video, hopefully I can get scrounge up some money to buy Uboat and review that next.
@@F.R.E.D.D2986 I've actually played U-Boat and it was pretty fun. Even installed a few mods to increase the learning curve lmao. Would have made a video on it but it runs like ass when I try to record it.

I fucking love this game and this video reminded me why. 3:39 Dat is true tho. They have enough depth charges to not just blow Japan up but enough depth charges to break the fockin' nation in half. It makes Nagisaki and Hiroshima look like Hello Kitty
That game is the biggest tease and denial sm experience ive ever been through. And im quite the pervert. The CTDs are endless and constant. But only once you fufilled all the tutorials flawlessly and gone through those dead end pre war patrols for several hours.
Hmm I've rarely had CTDs, have ya gotten the Steam version? If so might I suggest not doing so and availing yourself of alternative means on getting the game? Steam version is fugged.
This has encouraged me to play the game again First time I tried I was 13 I didn't even know wtf was Manuel targeting all I know was I watched das boot

Ngl, I’m a newcomer but I’m happy to see this games community is still alive Also, there’s a reason why the directors cut of Das boot is 12 hours long…or was it 8? Honestly, you need to put your heart and soul into the submarine games, as of late, I’ve been falling in love with that VR submarine game
I'm a big fan of Simulation games in general. There's something satisfying about learning how the game works and seeing all your practice pay off. A good game will always have a good community no matter the age. Just look at Morrowind! -Anzei
