I was reading Mr Maugham's novel (Of human bondage) I took a break and was curious whether I could find anything about him on UA-cam and found this beautifully narrated short story.

Look for the wonderful movie, "TRIO", that Maugham himself made of three of his Short Stories, "Quartet", "The Verger", and I fail to remember the last at this moment. I do remember how deeply they affected me. I just saved it now, which is how I happened upon this gem. I couldn't recommend "Trio" enough if you have any liking for Maugham...❤

What a wonderful.story-teller was S. Maugham! His English is so pure, so perfect, it has a kind of lightness that make it easily understandable for those whose English is a second language. Mine is French. The Maugham's prose reminds me the Oscar Wilde's one. And both men were among the most sophisticated and charming ones that ever lived. One of my favorite Maugham's story is The three fat women of Antibes because human nature is so keenly observed but also observed with sympathy.

FYI, Maugham was born in France, lived there till the age of 10, and also lived the second half of his life on the French Riviera. His English shows the influence of French constructions, particularly in novels set in France such as 'The Moon and Sixpence' and 'The Razor's Edge.'

"A little bit of money" back then must be the equivalent of six figures now.
Try to live eating out, living in hotels and such, even modest ones. You couldn't do it for less than $100 per day. Multiply by 2 or 3 if you include anything fancy and make it $500 if you are a man entertaining a lady. That's 10 to 15 thousand a month and while not enough to qualify as wealthy it's far better than average middle class, 6et the ability to live like that without working...times have indeed changed.

Tom didn't want to enjoy his life, he just didn't want any responsibility and was a careless man
True enjoyment of life is attending to your responsibility and having suitable amount of pleasures and not being transgressive in each

Dear Kane, Could you help me please, what is your opinion about these questions: How Maugham satirizes his works?
What is psychological prose and its characteristic which Maugham imbibes into his works?
    Thank you very much

They are definitely based on his actual experiences as a doctor I believe, usually class mobility seems to be a reoccurring theme. I have only seen the movies, not read his books.

Maybe this just shows how unfair life is. Annoying and immoral as Tom is, we can't deny that in reality a lot of people dont get what they deserve, whether for better or for worse
