Hmmm...I know this is a bit wacky, but it'd be a cool project to get this working in a regular dmg shell, with a working power-switch and backlight. I can already imagine that'd be a great deal of work, but it'd be awesome to see!
The D pad stands out to me. Back story: Nintendo patented their design of the D pad, which gave them a huge leverage on the early console market by allowing them to have a directional control that didn't actually suck. The secret is the pivot ball that's on the bottom of the D pad, and allows the pad to be decisively moved in any direction with minimal risk of false input because the mechanism serves to both press and release the button. Like you said, it's an alarm clock, but nevertheless te D pad is missing that feature which is a shame. The patent expired in 2005, and it's a licensed product, so there's really no legal reason why they couldn't include it. Maybe they decided against it because the rubber membrane would need a hole in the middle which would make it potentially a couple of cents more expensive.
I'd be tempted to mod it the other way around, and put the clock parts into an actual (repro) DMG shell! And a decent light. Please, someone, give it a decent light...
So glad you opened this guy up. Interesting to see just how much they built this down to a price. I wonder if anyone has ever made an alarm clock gameboy reprocart and then just left their gameboy on ac adapter as a legit gameboy alarm clock!
I need scissors... grabs scissors... opens new pair of scissors... looks legit.
Ssh his parents dont allow him to have scissors.

When you said it has mario sounds for the alarm, I was actually hoping you would set it to have the alarm go off so we could hear it :-(
Sorry dude!
it just plays the first level theme of super mario land

I wish they still made these as it would fit perfectly on my game boy shelf.
I wanted to hear the alarm :(
Honestly I think it'd be fun to mod it into an actual Original Gameboy Shell or even a cool transparent shell. It'd be a fun project
That is a good idea!
Nothing beats the official N64 shower radio alarm clock
That sounds interesting!

Well... I do. Every single day before going to school. My phone is always turned off at night.
