BFS-Auto: High Speed Book Scanner at over 250 pages/min

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 16 лис 2012
  • BFS-Auto can achieve high-speed and high-definition book digitization at over 250 pages/min using the original media format. This performance is realized by three key points: high-speed fully-automated page flipping, real-time 3D recognition of the flipped pages, and high-accuracy restoration to a flat document image. This system is toward the practical use in 2013.

as someone who scans lots of books, i like the concept of smartphone book scanning, and if you keep on experimenting with this with a wide array of book types you will have the typical page shapes data that will allow you to make this happen - within a couple years - as a cheap app.

@classic max i have no idea how people caring about 0-100 causing more accidents is relevant to this, considering that the point of my comment was to highlight how far engine technology (really, just technology in general) has progressed. Today's "boring" cars have engines with the same amount of power that would've been considered obscene 20-30 years ago.

This opens more doors than it closes. I'm thinking of low SES community college students. I have found that a laptop and some PDFs or online readers is way cheaper than traditional textbooks. As well, is lots of older stuff not yet online. I think we are smart enough to figure out the copyright/intellectual property issues.

This is obviously not designed for scanning vintage books in delicate conditions. Those copies still have to be scaned by hand with the grestest of cares in order to both preserve the book and ensure a top quality digitalization.
This particular machine is meant for quick digitalization of modern books. It aims for practicality, economy and time saving. Not for preservation or top quality.

This will be a wet dream for archivists. The page flipping is the most impressive, but I have no idea how it works (I didn't see how on the website, either). I imagine it works by air currents literally blowing the page to turn it, and possibly another puff of air to make it settle flat. The pages are probably exposed to the air current by a high-precision page sensor that moves down the stack one page at a time. The technologies are all in place, so it's nice to see them used in this way.

Love the demo, but I have tons of old and brittle books, that won't go as smoothly as this specially prepared book. Some times pages are so brittle they will break; after scanning a few books, the whole device will be covered by paper dust, and other books have been wet (o horror), with pages sticking together. So great for new books, but for antique books, you'll need a manual mode, so you can carefully take your time to turn the pages.
