Kargil is our next destination for Volunteering as Teachers in Ladakh. As we were looking for our next destination to volunteer where we can contribute maximum value, we were suggested Kargil and our first reaction was that of skepticism. We thought that given its proximity to the border and war history of the Indo-Pak War of 1999, Kargil would be this remote place with barren peaks, a lot of presence of the Indian Army and barricades etc and maybe some safety concerns due to border tensions too.
We had already lived in Turtuk, a small and beautiful village in Nubra Valley which is also located at the Indo-Pak border and it had turned out to be an absolutely amazing experience given the warm and kind people, lovely kids and the beautiful scenic views of Karakoram Range.
However, all our doubts and apprehensions vanished in our first visit to Kargil where we found to be like any other city in India albeit with its own unique charm. Walking in the lanes of its markets which house some really old shops selling traditional wares can often remind one of the old markets of Karachi, Lahore or Peshawar. Another thing that cemented our decision was our visit to the nearby villages which clearly need a lot of work in terms of upliftment of education.
We packed up from Leh where we were working with Lamdon School and also conducting private tutions in areas of Communication skills, Computer Coding and Maths. While this was quite exciting in itself, what made our entire stay thrilling was spending the Winters in extreme conditions of Ladakh.
Having squeezed our entire household in our beloved Mahindra Thar we started for Kargil on a fine Saturday morning.
Kargil is about 220 KMs away from Leh and the road passes through some scenic places including the Indus Zanskar sangam, Lamayuru Monastery and Moonland and a unique place Ulley which is famous for Snow Leopard sighting.
Another outstanding landmark on the way right before Kargil is Mulbekh which has an ancient statue of Maitreya Buddha called as Chamba statue carved into a rock and is believed to be almost 2000 yrs old!
We have started working with a lot of schools here and are looking forward to an exciting journey ahead.

Kargil is so beautiful!!We were there last month. Just loved the place and the hotel Zozilla residency was a delight! However the road From Kargil to Sonamarg and vice versa took all our enthusiasm away. They should avoid such short announcement road blocks! We were stuck hours on the road both ways. Plus the Zozilla pass is dangerous. Better to travel to Kargil via Leh. Will never recommend the Zozilla pass way To Sonamarg and Srinagar. What a wonderful vlog you both have! And what good work! Reliving my Kargil memories with your vlog! All good wishes!
So sorry to hear about your experience.. indeed the roads at Zozila are very dangerous. Generally, what I have heard from people is that if you are coming from Sonmarg, towards kargil then it is best to cross the pass early morning to avoid traffic as well as road blocks due to construction activity. However, like you mentioned Leh to Kargil route is better, scenic and has a lot of lovely places to see on the way like Lamayuru, moonland etc

How you apply for volunteering teacher
Hey Himanshu. We found our first contact (Sarah in Turtuk) through basic Google search and post that it has just been one person introducing us to another (Universe works in Magical ways! ). You can ping us on contact.theseekingsoul@gmail.com or DM us on Insta and we would be happy to help. There are a bunch of places in Ladakh that need teacher volunteers.
How much is rent in Leh per month?
It depends on the locality etc. We paid 9k a month for a room and attach kitchen

Just start calling the guesthouses on Google maps. That’s how we found our stay option.

Have been to turtuk, from my experience people of turtuk are still pro Pakistan.. it's only for money and livelihood they stay low .. It may not be with everyone out there but most of them we experienced was like I mentioned
