The Three Domain System, developed by Carl Woese in 1990, is a system for classifying biological organisms based on differences in 16S ribosomal RNA(rRNA) structure.
Previously the 2 kingdom, 3 kingdom and 5 Kingdom classification system classify organisms based on common physical characteristics. But in this three domain system the classification is done with genetic analysis, which is more specific.
Why Three Domain System
Carl Woese proposed that a group of prokaryotic microorganisms called archaebacteria should be separated from other monerans.
Therefore, they decided to split kingdom monera into two separate kingdoms: - Eubacteria - Archaebacteria
Under this 3 domain system, organisms are classified into three domains and six kingdoms.
