One other thing on my MK3 Golf 1996, someone removed the metal mounting point for the center resonator on my car and replaced it for some reason with just one metal mounting point for one exhaust hanger. so funny! We did a Timing Chain on a 2007 passat 3.6L VR6 Quattro. Customer didn't understand the complexity, and I explained it like this. Imagine a 200 piece puzzle, but not an ordinary puzzle. Its a puzzle with just wild flowers with many different colors making it difficult. But then add the complexity of having to remove the trans, which adds another 200 piece puzzle, but then add quattro which adds another 200 piece puzzle. But the intake has to come off which adds another 200 piece puzzle, but to get the intake off you have to remove the front of the car which adds another 200 piece puzzle. Great minds think alike! Excellent idea with the puzzle!

    Dear Thomas,
    Your channel has been a regular visit for me, the other day I wondered how you seemed to drop off the landscape. How are you?
    This week I saw a 2007 VW FSI 2.0T Passat that chokes and dies when the oil fill cap is removed, it's very dramatic. It's not running lean, my Autel 906BT shows fuel trim is OK, and there is no hissing around the big plastic round PCV valve cap. I've found conflicting reports on the 'net, with some saying that this is a normal finding in this vehicle, and others saying that at idle the valve should choke down a little to reduce flow during high vacuum, like old school PCV valves do. The more I learn about these PCV modules and vacuum pumps in turbo engines, the more I realize how complex they are, especially with a turbo where intake pressures swing widely. In your experience, is a huge vac leak when the oil cap is removed a sign that the PCV valve is sticking open, soon to cause seal leaks and other secondary issues? Or, should I just wait and react when fuel trims send a warning signal?

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Рік тому

      Doing fine thanks... busy replying to comments and watching other youtubers (I seem to spot you in the comment sections no matter where I go). Most recently... Automotive Diagnostics & Programming (VW TSBs & Odis).
      If fuel trims are within spec, I would not worry about how it behaves when the cap is removed. PCV was designed to function with the oil filler cap in place. For the pcv to work correctly, it needs to sense pressure pulses from blowby & vacuum from the intake. Under extended boost conditions, pcv is vented in front of the turbo... so that pressure does not build up in the crankcase. A faulty pcv / too much vacuum will make it very difficult to remove the filler cap while the engine is running.

Spark plugs look black and with some oil residue. You think it can be valve seals? Or should I try an actual new turbo? Bad oil piston rings?
    I also ran the car with the car with the turbo charge pipe disconnect (to make it N/A) and it still blows smoke.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Рік тому +1

      Was the problem there before you changed the yurbo? If no, then it could be the turbo.
      Check the pcv system / oil separator... make sure it is the newest revision. Does the smoke smell of fuel, oil or coolant? If you don't know, try to smell it somehow. Check the turbo outlet for excessive oil

      Yes, white switch with yellow wire is for the warning buzzer. The switch is normally open and closes when pressure is present. Where as the blue switch closes when no pressure is present and opens when pressure is present.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  Рік тому

      I would have someone do a full system scan of all the modules to see if there are any helpful codes. Radiator fans running fast / loud is usually due to communication faults between modules or ac pressure that is too high. Using a capable scan tool, one can activate all those components via the appropriate module, to see if the module has control of those components. Otherwise, a good wiring diagram and a test light should be helpful.

I measured fuel pressure of the return line since there’s no schrader valve on the rail and it seems a little high when vehicle was off and running. I will back probe all the important bits when I get free time. Thanks again and looking forward to whatever is next with the channel!

    Hi Thomas.
    I have a question / story for you. I can't solve this and it's my daily driver.
    I will attempt to keep it short and technical.
    LAMBDA V = 1.48 at idle
    Low pressure fuel pump load = 35%
    HPFP at idle = 4.6 bar (matches EMC)
    HPFP at WOT = 156 bar (matches EMC)
    Pending Code = P0178 - Rich off idle
    07 GLi - 2.0L BPY FSI - original engine ran well prior to exploding (money shift). I swapped in a used engine after a true run through. ALL maintenance items: chains, belts, seals, gaskets and or leaks fixed / changed prior to swap.
    Removed pan (to check internals) and found bad balance shaft assembly and replaced that and new pickup too.
    At the same time, I removed the balance shaft connections properly to delete the rotating mass.
    First start up after swap, the car had a perfect idle, sounded like no other FSI I have ever heard. So incredibly quiet, no dieseling just a smooth hum and a slight tick from seemingly one injector.
    Few gentle trips around town. I noticed it had ZERO go off idle. Checked codes and had none.
    At that time, I looked at the LTFT and it was at -24.90% so I reset the fuel trims.
    The moment I did that, the car came alive again. It had full blown boost with injector whine and traction control flashing. It was like the previous engine on hyperdrive - for about 5 minutes. Then flat again as the LTFT gets back down to -25% prior to setting the code.
    My STFT (idle) is perfect at -0.8 - 1%.
    while at low RPM cruise (40 in 5th gear at 2Kish RPM with 30% engine load) Lambda is bounding all over the place from -10 -> 18 and back all over the place.
    While getting to a standard cruise (70 ish MPH in 6th at 2.7K ish RPM) the lambda is still bounding at cruise and you can feel a surge pulsing non stop (if you are REALLY intune with the cars expected behavior.) that passengers can't detect.

      Not sure, sorry. Smell the engine oil... in case the HPFP is leaking fuel into the crankcase. If power returns after clearing codes, then my guess is that something is making the ecm think that the engine is running rich (when it is not).

    • @gamersroost
      @gamersroost Рік тому

      Thanks for the reply as always @@EXOVCDS !
      I checked the oil. It's super clean for an FSI. Maybe because I just cleaned everything when I had it apart. Anyhow, I am going to replace the injectors. I added Lucas fuel conditioner and the trims cleaned up a LOT. I am not wasting more time on it. I suppose I am simply going to pull the intake, clean the valves and runners, replace the injectors and be done. 223K miles :--0

      I unplugged it several times in my testing, however i never cleared the trims after doing that. That was the key.

      I am however confused, since I tested the MAF resistance with both scan tool and DVOM. I also cleaned it and tested the pins for proper resistance. I don't know why but I also don't care. I learned something today. Thanks man.

      @@gamersroost keep in mind that if there is a boost leak... the engine will run rich due to lack of air. When the maf is disconnected, the ecm defaults to presets. Fix the boost leak and then attach the maf again, to see if things still go rich.

      Does your old maf have 5 pins also? What year ALH? If the harness only has 4 pins, don't worry about the extra pin... as long as your old maf also has 5. If your old maf only has 4 pins, then the maf is wrong. P0101 can be set because of air leaks after the maf, boost leaks, broken intercooler core, carbon in the intake, the egr or restricted air filter. You'll have to do some investigating.

      Disconnect both battery cables from the battery. Clean the throttle body using a rag and some brake parts cleaner, MAF cleaner or gasoline. Touch the two batter cables / clamps together for 5 to 10 seconds. Reconnect the cables to the battery. Start the engine. Let the engine idle for 10 minutes. Drive the car at various rpm, come to a stop and let idle for 5 minutes. Turn engine off. Wait 2 minutes and start engine.

      @@James-fl2ug throttle adaptation will only cure an idle issue... low or too high idle.
      If the car does not want to move or the rpm do not go past 4000 if you quickly step onvthe gas pedal... then the cable is probably not adjusted correctly, causing the throttle to not open fully. Have someone step on the gas pedal fully (engine off) and check how far the throttle opens. Using a scan too (key ON engine off), check that throttle position is 0% when gas pedal is not touched and 100% when pressed all the way.
