My great uncle was in Vietnam. He was a soldier, and apparently the enemy soldiers had given a grenade to a very young girl and she was running to his troop with it. He had to make a choice, his men, or the child. He shot her dead. He came home and often would wake up screaming. It really fucked him up decades after it happened. Shits fucked
I had a buddy in high school that came to America from Vietnam in the early 90s. He told me that the viet cong would go get his dad (maybe 9 or 10) and anyone else in the village who could hold a weapon when an American patrol was nearby. They then tied all the armed kids to tall trees, and would come cut them down at the end of the engagements.
Kids getting mined is nothing new. Vietnam was horrible about shit like that. Read a story about a mom handing one of her kids off to a soldier. He blew up. Mom takes off running and gets lit up by an entire platoon of M16's and M60s. Literally cut in half. She had another kid with her tho....they didn't get close enough to find out if he was mined too.....

I don’t know why, but just seeing the title of this reminded me of a story my friend told me. His brother’s friend medic in the military. He often saw many corpses and for the most part, it didn’t really affect him. But the day he saw a dead dog, it gave him PTSD. My guess is it was the thought that an animal was trained from birth to fight lost its life over something it can’t even fathom. Same with kids, they are forced to fight even if they don’t know what they’re fighting for.
I can handle humans dying horribly, but an animal dying? Leaves a hole in my heart, it’s so depressing to think about and keeps me up at night sometimes, I own a dog and get worried all the time. And nice Titanfall 2 picture.

My aunt was a language teacher for the canadian military and was often sent to the lands they recently "conquered" to open schools for children. She thought them french and english to help them comunicate with the surounding soldiers. Often members of the community would become like assistant teachers. Well one time there was a female assistant teacher that was married and had two kids. Both kids were students at the school and at the time there was still a resistance going on. Their mother was very nervous and visably distressed. My aunt had the soldiers that were protecting the school search the mother and they found out she was rigged with explosives. They took off the vest she was wearing and threw it out the window. They then found the husband outside the school with a detinator and stopped him (idk if they killed him or not). Appearently, we was ready to use is wife to blow up the whole school with his children in it.
@Deniz Metinoğlu T. Believe me, she knows how amazing she is (is super confident about it). The only things that suprised her was that the man was willing to kill his own kids who were taking the class in order to kill one canadian officer (my aunt) who didn't even know how to fight (I'm not kidding she was under guard most of the time but they stayed outside of the school itself to not scare the children). She later learned that some of the men in that community considered their women and children like objects. Luckly the mother and her kids were able to get away from him.
@Deniz Metinoğlu T. I'm not sure where it happened but it was common there for women and children to be treated like tools. In fact my aunt's team often had to pay particular attention to women and children because they were often used as weapons in some way (suicide bomber, throwing grenades, etc.) but usually not actually holding a gun. That was the "men's job". Luckly, this was the only incident she had a that school.
I think the most disturbing part about this is that people would use kids as weapons killing the kids in the process. Edit: Can you guys stop having a racism war in my comment?
What bothered me, was the story about the 8 year old running with a grenade with the father watching from afar. Why would you use your kid like that. Just do it yourself you fucking pussy. Shit breaks my heart.

Child soldiers. A staple of proxy wars. The worst part is not those who die, is those who survive. I met a dozen of them in an internment center in Colombia, and they were just like the surviving kids used by the drug cartels and other criminal organisations I met from El Salvador or Panama taken by child protection services by the embassy. Not a soldier but: I was an aid-worker for the Red Cross during the late 90's-early 00's in the DRC during the second Congo war and we used to come across a lot of child soldiers when we were giving out aid. However, these children weren't being press-ganged into military service per-sec but rather the men of the village had gone off to fight in the war and died so their sons had took up arms to protect their village and their female relatives that were left behind. The military used to provide convoy protection for charity vehicles and they said: "We can fight the war or protect villages but we can't do both so these boys being able to protect their villages from militias who are able out-flank us is the only way we can fight this war unfortunately" It was kind of fucked up that these poor boys (and sometimes girls) were walking around with automatic rifles and shotguns like it was completely normal which it was for them because they'd never known anything else :(

I have a friend who was in the Royal army, he loved the job. Ever since he got discharged he's been open with most his experiences. One night he got drunk, said how much he loved us but that love and laughter quickly changed and he started crying. He broke down screaming how he was a murderer, that he shot a kid at basically point blank range. I don't know the scenario because we tried to calm him down and the story just turned to mummbles and sobs. He was honourably discharged after being injured in a raid, not for the kid situation (in case some people were wondering)

I was an aid-worker for the Red Cross during the late 90's-early 00's in the DRC during the second Congo war and we used to come across a lot of child soldiers when we were giving out aid.
However, these children weren't being press-ganged into military service per-sec but rather the men of the village had gone off to fight in the war and died so their sons had took up arms to protect their village and their female relatives that were left behind.
The military used to provide convoy protection for charity vehicles and they said:
"We can fight the war or protect villages but we can't do both so these boys being able to protect their villages from militias who are able out-flank us is the only way we can fight this war unfortunately"

But if an organization coerces the citizens into using themselves and children as bait or soldiers you can't really apply the law. I'm sure it only works if done under governmental order.

This is part of the reason why I hope the draft never comes back for the US military. You send off units, some of whom are barely old enough to vote, and not old enough to legally drink, possibly to maim and kill other humans half their age. Nobody wins in war except those who profit from it
edit: I know the whole us v. them argument holds water here, and I do understand some things are inevitable. But those soldiers who are able to take the life of a kid unfortunate enough to be subjected to likely lifelong radicalization and not be haunted afterwards...that says a lot more than I would like for it to
Anthony Freeman honestly I want to join the us military but I don’t know if I’d be able to do this. I’m trying to mentally prepare myself even though I know it probably won’t be enough.
Raymond Durr the simple fact that you see that and are willing to prepare for the mental state says that you will be the kind of man we need in the military.
There was actually a study done for enlistment rates of new recruits (could be old news, don’t quote me) that said with this war in the Middle East, there were so many army enlists, that if a Third World War were to take place, they would not need to draft in the first place.
I'm sure the draft will never affect us unless a country attacks our homeland.
Chef Vortivask if I remember correctly, that statistic came out at the end of the Obama era (2014-ish).
Due to the current warhawk stance America has been taking however, enlistment rates are way down. Something about spending two decades in a sandbox with guerillas has disheartened enlistees.
If any soldiers are reading this, thanks for your service and I hope you find peace with what you've gone through, you don't deserve to be haunted by your past, but I am sure you probably are. Please be okay and seek help if you need it. You dont need to be alone in your struggles if you have any.

i got one,
my grandfather was in vietnam (marine), and when he and a small platoon were advancing to east vietnam, they came across a small village. there was 1 single road, about 30 feet wide, and there were several abandoned market carts on the sides. they were walking, bunched up on the right side, clearing houses (all abandoned), and all of a sudden, a kid come out from behind a cart on the left side. he had an AK 47, and my grandpa was the first to open fire, and the only one to open fire. he fired a burst of bullets, 2 hitting the kids torso, and the next hitting his neck, but the scary things was that the kid didnt die instantlt, and as they moved towards the kid, he was coughing up bloood crying. my grandpa has serious PTSD from nam, and he would tell my mother stories when he was drunk on whiskey. she never wanted to hear the stories, but my grandpa got so emotional if she left. he just wanted someone to talk to (mom was 11 when he told these stories)

i remember going in Iraq with my friends/comrades pretty often when we were like all just 19. two of us joined the army and it was all really good (trust me, in some point it's a beautiful experience). then we had to check in uh little villages if everything was sort of all right. it turns out that in one of these little houses, in one of the many little villages, a kid was literally forced to kidnap people from the neighborhood villages and kill them while his whole family was downstairs being held as hostages. while breaking in, we saw them filming this kid with a mile-away-looking expression beheading a poor dude. when the trio of jihadists (turned out that they were from the jihad), somehow scared of us, screamed at the kid to kill us with a service gun he had in his pocket. the worst of things was the kid being shot multiple times in the chest and just trying to scream. exactly one year later i had to leave because I almost got ptsd for a moment.
