Diana Damrau - Casta Diva, Ah! Bello, a me ritorna

Wow, so many negative comments here. I’ve heard lots of Casta Divas on UA-cam and personally don’t mind this. There are some lovely parts and one must give her credit for tackling such a demanding aria. As for the hand movements I am quite prepared to entertain the notion that Miss Damrau is merely expressing or acting out what she is feeling inside. It is after all a prayer to the Goddess of the Moon which is not exactly your everyday, mundane happening. Maybe some of the folk on here are lacking a bit of imagination? I am quite happy to believe that Diana is totally entranced in this prayer. I have faith in her a singing actress too because her Queen of The Night arias from the Covent Garden Production are 2 of the best acted arias I have ever seen. Bravo Diana!!!

I think folks are being a bit harsh. She is in tune, vocal quality is generally very good, top is solid, diction is good. A big, dramatic voice that can handle the fireworks is ideal, but clearly the public enjoyed what she delivered. I agree the acting is not subtle, but I think the physicality is her way of trying to stay flexible, and that probably helps her. Very few could touch Callas in her prime. We just have to leave her in a class by herself and take everyone else on their own terms.

She brings back memories of Renata Scotto's Norma, which was equally inappropriate for her voice. I loath her acting, which is all over-the-top indication. What the hell is she doing with her hands. This is not the bird chorus from Lucia's Mad Scene.

@@artdanks4846her acting is always so histrionic it becomes laughable in most roles. This is a sublime priestess, not an angry bitch like Queen of the Night. And her vocal is on pitch but too bright for Italian roles which require a voice with a balance in dark and bright qualities.

Hand movements is not necessary. Its all about the voice in this aria. She tends to overplay from time to time. Voice is good. Not a Maria Callas or a Mimi Coertse, but well done.

Para abordar Norma la cantante debe ser Todo Terreno, es decir, ser casi soprano absoluta, cantantes que se pueden contar con los dedos de una mano y que en la actualidad no hay. Este rol tiene pasajes ligeros de coloratura pero muy demandantes, pasajes dramáticos para una voz muy potente, capacidad respiratoria casi sobrenatural. Diana, no tiene todo eso. No es un papel para su voz.

Many people think her hand acting ruin her voice but in fact, Damrau uses her hands to support her singing... And no one need to be like Callas. Callas is not a sacrosanct soprano. There are konigin der nacht, constanze, GERMAN violetta, GERMAN lucia, ect. in Damrau's Norma.

Very slow tempos, no breath support, aspirated-H all over, the vowels are all gone, messy fioritura....rearranged words (ahh si...), and the cabaletta is a total mess, I have no idea ho conducted this, but didn't do a very good job. And the acting...there's much more gestures than correct notes.

That performance is truly horrible!!!! She doesn't have the appropriate vocal skills for belcanto nor does she have the right voice for Norma. It's so sad to see how bad opera singing has become. Bellini is spinning in his grave!!!

I don't get it either. I know no one is Callas, but at least they can learn to inhabit the technique. But I guess it's too difficult. I am currently learning Norma part, I am a spinto-dramatic soprano and I am learning the role from Callas' recordings

Let's leave the fact of what Diana is, for now, and what she did with her voice.
The saddest part of the whole matter is that it is a small unimportant uninteresting soubrette voice, that is only capable of being 2 soprano in a choir. And yet, miraculously, she somehow succeeded on an international level and there are still people who actually go and pay for a ticket to watch her.
This is the saddest part, supporting bad singers.

Hola desde MADRID yo a esta cantante siempre le vi eso un problema escénico que rompe totalmente cuando canta no puedo describir exactamente que hace porque hace tantas cosas que ella arruina totalmente lo más importante cantar toda esa gesticulación y todo ese movimiento ensucia y arruina lo que todo público de la ópera viene ha difrutar la voz el sonido y los pasajes musicales que en este caso aquí quedan poco escuchable esta obra requiere de mucho sonido bien colocado y emitido que en mi modesta opinión no lo están y para finalizar como digo siempre hay que saber lo que tú voz debe y puede cantar y aquí no estamos criticando solo damos nuestra opinión ante un vídeo que está expuesto en este canal donde cada quien dice lo que cree de lo que ha visto un saludo a todos y aquí queda demostrado que un grupo de admiradores de una de las más grandes disciplinas artísticas no estamos equivocados al señalar los errores de esta Cantante mis saludos a todos

Absolutely horrible! Never in a million years should Damrau have been allowed to sing (i.e. destroy) this aria! Even when she was at her best (which even then wasn't that great), her voice just simply has never been the right type to sing Norma!

What's with all these Ney Sayers ? I love Callas's version of course but I love Diana's as much. Opera is an art form of singing
while acting and for that I can really see her on the actual stage
production doing this role and being the person she should be.
You shouldn't be closing your eyes when you WATCH Opera.

Non e' voce per Norma e Bellini in genere. Una prova fallita purtroppo in partenza come pure e' la sua Violetta. In ogni caso il canto "alla tedesca" poco si sposa con il Melodramma romantico italiano. Spero non canti tutto il ruolo...ma non credo.
