Albania is a small yet beautiful country located in southeastern Europe, bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, North Macedonia to the east, Greece to the south and the Adriatic and Ionian seas to the west and southwest, respectively. Its rich history and geography have contributed to the country's unique culture and diverse landscape.
Albania's geography is characterized by a range of natural features, including rugged mountains, fertile valleys, and beautiful coastlines. The Albanian Alps are the highest mountain range in the country, with peaks reaching up to 2,700 meters. The country also has several national parks, including the Theth National Park, which is home to some of the country's most spectacular scenery.
The country's coastline is also a major draw for visitors, with stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. The Albanian Riviera, in particular, is a popular destination for tourists, with its picturesque fishing villages and secluded coves. The country's major rivers include the Drin, the Mat, and the Shkumbin, all of which flow into the Adriatic or the Ionian Sea.
Albania's history dates back thousands of years, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic era. The Illyrians were the earliest known inhabitants of the region, and they were later conquered by the Greeks, the Romans, and the Byzantines. In the 15th century, Albania was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and remained under Ottoman rule for over four centuries.
During this time, Albania was divided into several provinces, each with its own local ruler. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a nationalist movement emerged in Albania, with the goal of establishing an independent Albanian state. In 1912, Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire, and a monarchy was established under the rule of Prince Wilhelm of Wied.
The country's monarchy was short-lived, however, and in 1924, a republican government was established under the leadership of Ahmet Zogu. Zogu later proclaimed himself king, and under his rule, Albania saw significant economic and social progress. However, his regime was also marked by authoritarianism and political repression.
In 1939, Albania was invaded by Italy, and King Zogu was forced into exile. Italy established a puppet government in Albania, which remained in power until the end of World War II. After the war, Albania became a communist state under the rule of Enver Hoxha, who remained in power until his death in 1985.
