    Summer of 1981. I was 11 years old and my mom wouldn't let me watch it. So I told her I wanted to see another movie that was playing at the same time. She dropped me off for the mantinee. I paid for Superman 2 and walked into Heavy Metal. I was blown away and the only kid in my neighborhood who got to see it!!

      My dad had a moment of badass and rented it. He asked me what was the worst movie I'd seen, I told him my first anime was Akira. So, we watched it together. I was 9.

    This song sounds like The Eagles because Don Felder was in the band, and is still a great guitarist and songwriter.
    The digital recording style and instruments are a musical time capsule for 1980-81. The recording techniques and guitar sounds are right out of " Life in the Fast Lane " as well as other Eagle stuff from that era. It sounds like cocaine, expensive fast cars, bright lights, "overindulging", and girls. Then throw in the cartoon movie.
    It's brilliant and a great tune.
    I was blown away in the theater when it came out and as a young musician/guitarist and was sure it was The Eagles.
    " Takin' a Ride " kicks your butt as the term " Heavy Metal " was becoming a part of pop culture, art, music, and journalist themes.
    " Heavy Metal " magazine became a movie.The " Hair Head " bands followed and still do. The song list itself reflects the year. Now the term is a genre.
    Long live the movie " Heavy Metal ".

      Yes, there were technological limitations. It also depends on how long the musicians can play for. It kills me that the Beatles played "Helter Skelter" for 20 minutes and cut it down to just about three minutes for the album track. Nothing beats George screaming "I got blisters on my fingers!"

    Never forget rotoscope animation. Truly ahead of it’s time, and ultimately, sadly, shunned by the major film making community. You’ll never see another film like this, or the ‘78 Lord of the Rings. It’s all done digitally now, and while it looks nice enough, it loses all of its style in the computer.

    The B-17 sequence has such a memorable opening. The smooth rotoscope animation of the bomber, this music, the gunners pounding away on their ANM2 machine guns. It might be the shortest and least elaborate scene in the whole movie, but it has such impact. I want to be there.

      +PSIcoh Point?... Piracy ruined it, the internet ruins everything.. Many born in the mid 80's and up decided it would be awesome to download music around '93-'95 when the internet really got started, so the monetary value of promoting music videos went away as soon as the monetary value of albums went away.. The only way MTV could have made any continuous profits was by airing bullshit shows that only those with an IQ of under 90 would have the patience to watch.. Not only has your generation been helping out, mine was the middle man (born in '96) and those before me (Started the destruction and caused most of the damage) Not only do we have to go on youtube to watch music videos and have to rely on pandora to listen to any potential solid bands, like we were able to on MTV, we have to order solid albums online because nobody buys them anymore, we also pay a buttload of money to go to concerts because there are no albums to promote/purchase, you could go see bands like metallica and pantera etc for dirt cheap because they would go out and buy albums.. Now you'd be paying $50+ not including drinks and merchandise you'd like to purchase..

    • @sergeantbigmac
      @sergeantbigmac 10 років тому +13

      jdfields711 Well bombing runs happened on both fronts. There was almost always a bombing by air before troops landed on an island in the PTO, not to mention the firebombing campaign of Tokyo that killed many more people than either of the A-bombs. But thats all beside the point because that sequence was trippy as fuck.

    This song is honestly really good. I never heard of heavy metal until south park, but its a pretty cool movie actually.
