Luck! It turns out I was lucky with our rehydrating. We don't usually rehydrate our apple slices, we just eat them dry. Love them! After getting your question, I did a little test with 2 slices of the freeze dried apples. (I'll post a photo on the channel Community page) I took two small bowls of water and put a slice of apple in each. In one bowl I added some citric acid and ascorbic acid and the other is just plain water. Surprise! The slice that's in just plan water started to turned brown in just seconds. (Okay the seconds may have been more than 60, but it was quick.) I had thought that the fact that I had dipped them in citric acid and ascorbic acid water before freeze drying would have been enough. It's not. Well, it turns out that the Spiced Apple Cider mix I used for rehydrating the apples for this video has sodium citrite and ascorbic acid in it.
@@SchoolReports Thank you for the tip on using the Spiced Apple Cider mix. I wanted to make an Apple Crisp dessert with the freeze-dried apples. I don't mind some as a snack but I really prefer being able to use stuff in recipes too.
Interesting! I’ll know to peel next time I FD apples. A lot of my friends don’t care for the peels even crunchy 🤷♀️
That is brilliant thanks for sharing , i don't think I've seen the apple cider powder here in Australia ill have to google around
Loox great
Try using tapioca it will make it thick.
How do you keep them from turning brown when you rehydrate them?
Luck!

@@Barbarabenhill We would definitely peel the apples that we're going to rehydrate. The ones for snacking on are fine with the peel on.
The rehydrated and then you put silicone packets or anything else that absorbs moisture into your bags with the foods you are trying to preserve?
Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking.
