Chris Meyer is such an awesome teacher, I’m sure this book will be super useful even for those who have been using modular for years. I can’t wait to crack this open! Thanks for the great interview Ben! 👍

@@DivKid indeed from this Ben to you Divkid Ben, I am looking forward to using the book for building my first setup into the modular world. I am just using the free VCV Rack as I learn before spending any money.

I absolutely love the idea of bringing back symbols to the Modular Ecosystem. Making them available as a Font would be Extremely useful for what i'm planning on doing, but if lots of other Manufacturers take it on board, it could very well become a universal language for Synthesis. Exciting stuff!

    • @DivKid

Yeah could be an amazing thing for us all.

Absolutely. I'm just listening through this one again, some great insights here. Looking forward to getting the book.
Being able to clearly identify what some of these complex modules have behind the panel is something that interests me greatly as a Eurorack/SynthDIY builder. I always find myself imagining/guessing what circuits or ICs were used, and how. So, the Symbol Language being adopted by manufacturers i think would not only help SynthDIYers like myself, but also the general Modular user, who might not realize that their 'Maths' (for example) is actually made up of several distinct Functions/Circuits, wired or "Patched" in a particular order. Win Win for everybody.

This book has been a great help in my new adventures into modular! When I'm not doing lunchtime modular music at work, I'm trying to learn what the hell I'm actually doing.

Also might be worth mentioning in the book where modular meet ups are around the world as VICMOD in Melbourne Australia has been going for 14 years monthly and we also perform live as Vicmod Ensemble and have our record label Vicmod Records :-)

Great to hear of a 14 year strong evening in Aus. I heard of one in Germany running for 12 years. Great to see/hear.

This looks like great fun. :-) I learned modular concepts from Rolands 100m Patch/Synthesis manuals.Alas... they were lost via college. and though I still don't have a hardware modular (yet - LOL!), I have employed many of the concepts over decades since, to good effect (I hope). Thanks for this. -ant

Hi Ant, I love reading those old synth manuals after finding many of them on the internet. I always enjoyed things like the Model D manual that might outline a flute or trumpet sound. As they're nothing like those instruments but just suggesting that tone with the synth can lead to interesting sounds. Give VCV Rack a go (free software) if you're wanting to try out some modular based things easily.

my question: is it better to buy a system like Erica Synths Techno System or Make Noise Cartesian that comes with the case/power and modules or build from scratch as a beginner?

Rather then developing some sort of application, it would be much easier to develop a symbol library for an existing diagram application.

That's great! I only asked because sites like Redbubble have been selling counterfeits for quite a while. But, it sounds like it was probably the Silver Sprocket pop-up, direct from the source!

I need to get the Modular Podcast thing sorted out first. As these aren't regular I don't intend to do them as podcasts. However you're welcome to the audio if you wish.
