Worst part is, the rechargables have a better connection to the controller. The standard AA sleeves put strain on the bottom part of the battery bay, cracking the plastic over heavy use and worsening the connection to AA batteries. However, since the rechargable packs get a connection via the back, it's a much sturdier connection, even with the cracked plastic

Thanks for this old video. Gave me the will to open a battery pack. I tried the "fix" on some on my batteries and it worked (shorted pins 1 and 5, then 2 and 6 to reset the circuit) and then applied 9 volts to pin 2 and 5 for about 5 seconds. They "revived" and normally charged. But one pack didn't so I cracked it open (carefully so I can reuse it if needed) and find out that the spot welding between batteries failed and one was not making contact (I must've dropped it or something). Fixed that and it worked again. White rechargeable batteries (no brand). It was an INSTEN kit that got from Amazon (one charging station for batteries only with 2x 2400 mAh battery packs. I was gonna throw it away but seen your video made me rethink it and I'm glad I did :)

How do you open the battery pack? Considering opening and replacing the batteries since I already have 3 of these things that don't work.

Thank you very much! I will buy a generic kit for 8$ and put good AA recharcheable batteries on it (they come with 300mah or less).

Man, the one thing I'd hoped you'd actually show me is why the heck these things have six terminals when the controller has 4. In short, the wiring ... Pull those batteries out and explore that. I have a broke one and may be doing that instead. Call me curious but that is what I want to know, what the wiring is. That there are two standard NiMH batteries in there was fully expected and zero surprise. It is the charge convenience with kids I want - they just plug the controllers into the standard cable near the Xbox when not in use.

Trickle charging them brings them back to life. The problem is using the right one to not blow the fuse in the circuit board. The batties are salvageable from those packs. Use them as regular rechargeables for my wii motion controller and GC Wavebird.

There was probably nothing wrong with your battery pack. I had two that were "dead". I however bought a couple of Wildfire Evo controllers (useless shits) a few years back. After the Evo controllers stopped working correctly I used the USB slow charging port in those controllers to charge my dead batteries as a LOL. Come to find out it not only charged them but they were able to maintain a charge as well. There's something wrong with these Nyko battery systems that causes them to misidentify that the batteries are still functional.
The MS rechargable cords aren't reliable because they break and short out too easily. Datel may have gotten lucky and stumbled on a fix by accident. In hindsight I probably should've broken one of the controllers down and made it into a makeshift charger instead of throwing them both out.

jeez no wonder i have to cycle this shitty battery pack every time i use my xbox....
literally have to completely charge and empty it to get a half decent runtime. on the other hand my rechargable AA batteries are a bit bigger and a pain to get in and out of the original shell. also they dont fit in my remotes which pisses me off :/
