I have traveled all over the US by myself. My number one rule is don't be the only one in a park or a parking lot and always go with your gut. Sometimes rest areas are more safe. Again... same rule, never park there by yourself. If there are semi trucks and other vehicles you will be a lot safer. Even in an RV with 2 other girls, we pulled into a rest area and it was totally dark, and guess what? WE LEFT.

I have a large class A RV. We have motion sensor lights outside and also security cameras. I can see everything around us. I have a dog, two guns, a stun gun and pepper spray. One night we were parked in a store parking lot and some teenagers decided to pound on one of the sides. I turned on the outdoor lights, opened a window shade, pointed my shotgun at them and asked who wanted to be the first to go to hell. They got very scared, ran to their cars and left very quickly. We then drove to the next town and stayed at a campground. That was the only time we had any problems.

I think to be safe you should go to a registered & proper camping site or if you are in a natural spot outside then go & park with few other campers parked in the area .Remember there is safety in numbers.....

INSTEAD FOCUS AND BE READY..BECAUSE CRIMINALS DOESNT GIVES YOU SECOND CHANCE...BETTER LOCKED YOUR VAN AND OBSERVED IT CAREFULLY OR BETTER INSTALL MINI CCTC360😊 CAMERA SO THAT EVEN YOU WERE IN BED YOU COULD SEE THE ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE..FOR YOUR SAFETY..

My Wife and I almost had the same thing happen to us, a couple that were high on drugs with a young child were causing a racket with super loud music and swearing their heads off, so I went over to them to tell them to turn the music down and all hell broke loose. Police came and we ended up moving to another place away from those clowns. The police were really nice towards us and ended up arresting the other two. Felt really bad for the young child, those type of people should never have kids. But my wife and I still camp with the RV and it's all been good since. Be safe out there.

I was a 911 dispatcher for 5 years. There are a lot of very unstable people out there you guys. Please have protection like a firearm with you at all times & know how to use it correctly. I took many calls that in our rural area if some of these people had not had a firearm they would have been dead by the time my deputy reached their home. It is unfortunate but it is the world we live in. Please consider it if at all possible. So glad you are safe & hopefully take steps to be even safer in the event this occurs again.

They can't have a firearm with them because they are in Europe and not citizens of the handful of countries that allow (heavily regulated) gun ownership. They are vastly safer because of the blanket EU-wide laws restricting guns. I can give you stats if you like. In the US your fear-mongering might be a little more true because of how many people have guns and could harm them with those guns. However, it's still fear-mongering.
Contrary to the narrative you want to push, you are very safe in rural areas because there are so few people. Plenty of people go an entire lifetime in a rural area without anything ever happening. We hear about the rarest and worst cases. You in particular hear about the worst things that happen because you are a 911 operator. I'm sorry for that and I hope that you get help for what a job like that can do to you.
Please remember you are hearing the worst 1% and not the fine and happy 99%. The world we are living in is not unfortunate. The world is safer now than it's ever been and will continue only to get safer. You can look up the stats on that. The FACTS. Granted, covid set us back a bit. The internet and 24/7 news shows the worst of the worst and makes us feel like we are more unsafe than ever but that's simply just not true. Take care.

@@DeeMontezx1 You did read that was two months ago, yeah? With the most recent US elections, we will see a spike in not being so safe, sadly. A spike that will last a long time because of unwanted children.
In a world full of humans we will always have setbacks to safety but that doesn't change what I typed unless the election causes world war. You can look the stats up yourself.
Despite your ignorant assumptions I've had an abnormal amount of tragedy in my life. I'm just not naive enough to assume that means the WORLD is getting oh-so unsafe. You may be the one who should learn to see outside your own bubble and try to use critical thinking.✌

These types of things do happen. And I'm very sorry that it did happen. We're in the US and we have had encountered with idiots before but think of it like this. Don't be discouraged, if you had a vacation home and someone tried to break in, or did break in, you might be scared to ever sleep there again. However, if you have an RV or Van (caravan) then you just move on, that is the beauty of it. Safe travels and keep your chin up!

I am from the western USA, I camp all the time now that I am retired, but never without adequate means of self-protection. I have a 24/7 security system with me most of the time, his name is Zule. His growl is so scary it made a drunk guy pee himself one night, when he stumbled into our camp by mistake. Zule also has a bite and is very effective against anything from a bear to a drunk.
Unfortunately, in today's world there are predators out there that I deem too dangerous for Zule to take on alone. Therefore, I carry a double stack 9mm on me at all times, whether Zule is with me or not. I have an adequate armory, so each camping trip I assess the situation and take the variety of weapons that seems appropriate. Quite often my camping trips involve recreational shooting, especially when I know there are no other humans within ten miles and I am not disturbing anyone.

Combined with allowing people in that does not have the same respect or values, you get the loss of liberty and freedom and safety people in your country once had.

When I lived in my Jeep in SoCA last year, people knew it bec all of my windows were 100% covered up.
I left the front side windows uncovered and I put up a black curtain between the front and back seat, so it hung above my hips when I sat or slept. I put my 2 layers of 3 inch foam down in the passenger floorboard, so I perfectly reclined everso against the center seats, and with all my pillows it was a perfect place to sit and still be hidden, bec I was so low that people didn't realize I was inside..day or night. My blanket was black, so my legs were hidden. I was able to park in any Rich neighborhood that I wanted, so the nightly hunt for a place to park was over and I was never harassed again or constantly listen to every car that parked near by.
~Cooking and cleanup took 2hrs plus a Lots of space, so I embrace OMAD, 1 new restaurant everyday!
~Living in a department now has been nice but a huge part of me really wants to travel.
