I love how Tim’s Judas’ characteristics are like “unstable.” He’s dressed like a homeless wearing backpack, his voice cracks, he smokes whenever he gets panic by how Jesus or things going around here work, and in this number, unlike the other actors played Judas like Carl or Jerome who just desperately beg to the priests, Tim’s Judas literally strikes Caiaphas and makes him bleed. I love what those things do to Tim’s Judas’ characteristics. I loved it so much. Anyone 2019 here?
He even outdid Murray Head from the original album which is difficult. Before this I felt no one could outdo the original concept album. I felt that Ben Forster was kind of a lackluster Jesus though.
I don't feel as though anyone who's played Jesus has managed to use Ian Gillian from the source material as a template and took it up a notch the way Tim Minchin utilized Murray Head's performance as template and ran with it. I feel like Forster did what most theater performers do when the know they're being filmed and took it down a notch so as not to be labeled an overactor, then overcompensated to the effect of a lackluster performance, or at least I hope that's what happened.
His sob at 4:19 after he kicks away the palette... heartbreaking. He knows what he’s about to do and he sobs knowing there’s nothing else he can do. *chef’s kiss*
it is weird that i like the imperfections in tim's voice and what that brought to judas? i mean his emotional performance was exceptional. and outside of this, his vocal range is actually quite wide
it actually sounds worse because of horrible autotuning of Tim's voice unfortunately. the cracks and emotion would have came across much better without the unessicary auto tuning.
+kathytwloha Emotionally...maybe. Vocally...I disagree. He's good, but his range and technique aren't the best out of the others to have played this role.
kathytwloha yeah nah he's not really a musical theatre singer, he did well if you look at it from that aspect but in comparison to even the og judas he looks .. not great
Ahhh this always makes me cry! Judas has such an amazing voice and the “imperfections” (not really but that’s what some people call it) with his emotions like voice cracks and shortages really help the emotion and his voice is so unique with how it sounds. And omg Judas is my favorite character I cried so much when he died in the live version. Tim Minchin is a very great singer and everything it’s amazing!
I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a fan of this musical but this version was pretty great. The visuals, particularly in this song were really cool and god damn (pun not intended) Tim Minchin is clearly giving this role his all that is undeniable. Props were props are due
Because when Tim was cry/singing he was singing nearly a tone flat, they needed to have it F# but if he sung it too flat it wouldn't sound good at all. At least this follows general musical convention.
+gasmmusic he can hit most of the notes pretty well, the only song he struggled with really it this song. And that's understandable, I mean listen to it. He has to put a lot of emotion into the performance as well as singing it.
I think if they had left his voice as it was for this song it would’ve been fine... it was a highly emotional performance where his character was sobbing the entire time... off-key screaming and sobbing would’ve improved this tenfold 😂
My God, I saw him! He looked three-quarters dead And he was so bad I had to turn my head They beat him so hard That he was bent and lame And I know Who everybody's gonna blame I don't believe he knows I acted for our good I'd save him all the suffering If I could Don't believe, For our good I'd save him, If I could Cut the confessions, Forget the excuses I don't understand Why you're filled with remorse All that you've said Has come true with a vengeance The mob turned against him, You backed the right horse What you have done Will be the saving of Israel You'll be remembered Forever for this And not only that, You've been paid for your efforts Pretty good wages For one little kiss Christ, I know you can't hear me But I only did what you wanted me to Christ, I'd sell out the nation For I have been saddled With the murder of you I have been spattered With innocent blood I shall be dragged Through the slime and the mud I have been spattered With innocent blood I shall be dragged Through the slime and the... Slime and the... Slime and the mud! I don't know how to love him I don't know why he moves me He's a man, He's just a man He is not a king He is just the same As anyone I know He scares me so When he's cold and dead Will he let me be? Does he love... Does he love me, too? Does he care for me? My mind is in darkness now Oh God, I am sick! I've been used And You knew all the time! God, I'll never, ever know Why You chose me For Your crime! Your foul, bloody crime You have murdered me You have murdered me You have murdered me, Murdered me, murdered me, Murdered me, murdered me! Jesus!
Poor old Judas........ So long Judas........ Poor old Judas...... So long Judas....... Poor old Judas........ So long Judas........ Poor old Judas......... So long Judas.........
it's like they used the auto-tune to change his phrasing and tone... Minchin could definitely sing this, I've heard him singing live and he's got the range for it (though I've only found a version of heaven on their minds of him without auto-tune). anyone know where I could find some bootlegs of this tour? cause I really wanna hear this as he actually sung it.
I learned about Jesus Christ Superstar (this version in particular) in 8th Grade, and the moment I heard this song, my heart broke. Judas had been my favorite character throughout the entire musical. When Judas actually killed himself, I broke into tears. In the middle of class. Yes. I cried. So hard. After the musical was over, my lovely teacher had to make sure I was ok because I cried so hard TWICE!!! First when Judas died, then when Judas came back (those were happy tears)
I'm crying here! T.T I can feel all the pain and emotion in my body and it feels like I'm not being able to breath! Please, somebody tell me if you can feel the same as I do!
I saw this while it was recorded and when it was just in Birmingham and everyone was amazing but Tim (Judas) really stood out and so did Alexander (Pilate)
Ok, so I've watched it over and over again and this is what I think. If you notice when the one guy pulls his head back by his hair, Tim keeps the one side of his coat closed. As he is climbing the stairs, you can see the hook pushing through his coat. When he gets to the tree, he pulls what is probably a wire connected to that hook, which is connected to the harness you see him wearing in Superstar. I think when he ties the scarf to the tree, he hooks the wire onto tree. Then the extra tying is just for show.
I actually think that the fact that he doesn't have the best vocal ability gives the whole thing character, and he's by far the best judas because of his theatricality
I think it because they didn't want to risk any accident happening on live television or make things too "scary" or inappropriate There was one production (maybe more, but I only know the one) where Judas' actor actually accidentally hung himself because the stunt went wrong
Anybody notice that in this version he hangs himself with the Jewish prayer shawl that he uses as his scarf? I think it's really symbolic of how everything unraveled for him.
MY GOD. NO, NOT A PUN. I stopped breathing for a good ten seconds after this song/scene. I underestimated Minchin so much, even though I already loved his rendition of Judas! The part at 3:46 until the end fucking broke me. That's all I have to say. All the heaviness of this suicide is in these groans D:
Tim Minchin has the most limited vocal range of any Judas and is by far the weakest member of the class in terms of vocal ability. That being said I enjoyed him more than any other Judas, and he stole the show. Why? Cause the dude knows his character better than anyone else. His emotional performance is so much more important than his vocal performance. Great stuff.
I agree. I like him as Judas, what he lacks in vocals he makes up for in his acting, creating a very different experience to the character which isn't always portrayed.
i have to disagree with your view of his vocal performance (i think it's outstanding), but you couldn't be more right about his acting and how well he portrays the character and his emotions
My God! I saw him, he looked three-quarters dead And he was so bad I had to turn my head You beat him so hard that he was bent and lame And I don't know who everybody's gonna blame I don't believe he knows I acted for our good I'd save him all this suffering if I could Don't believe, our good Save him, if I could Cut the confessions, forget the excuses I don't understand why you're filled with remorse All that you've said has come true with a vengeance The mob turned against him, you backed the right horse Christ! I know you can't heal me But I only did what you wanted me to Christ! I'd sell out the nation For I have been saddled with the murder of you I have been spattered with innocent blood I shall be dragged through the slime and the mud I have been spattered with innocent blood I shall be dragged through the slime and the slime And the slime and the mud I don't know how to love him I don't know why he moves me He's a man, he's just a man He's not a king, he's just the same As anyone I know He scares me so When he's cold and dead, will he let me be? I'll never ever know Why you chose me for your crime Your foul, bloody crime! You have murdered me! You have murdered me! Murdered me, murdered me, murdered me Murdered me, murdered me, murdered me... Poor, old, Judas So long, Judas Poor, old, Judas So long, Judas Poor, old, Judas So long, Judas Poor, old, Judas So long, Judas

Anyone 2019 here?
Tims designs are genuis!
2020!
2021!
He even outdid Murray Head from the original album which is difficult. Before this I felt no one could outdo the original concept album. I felt that Ben Forster was kind of a lackluster Jesus though.

Tim Minchin as Judas is phenomenal casting.
I love how in this version, Judas socks Caiaphas right in the face to the point of bleeding and Caiaphas doesn't even bat an eye when he gets back up
His sob at 4:19 after he kicks away the palette... heartbreaking. He knows what he’s about to do and he sobs knowing there’s nothing else he can do. *chef’s kiss*
I know.. it’s sad!
it is weird that i like the imperfections in tim's voice and what that brought to judas? i mean his emotional performance was exceptional. and outside of this, his vocal range is actually quite wide

Tim Minchin IS the best Judas both vocally and emotionally.
He's probably not even top of the list of people who can sing it night in and night out.
+kathytwloha Emotionally...maybe. Vocally...I disagree. He's good, but his range and technique aren't the best out of the others to have played this role.
kathytwloha yeah nah he's not really a musical theatre singer, he did well if you look at it from that aspect but in comparison to even the og judas he looks .. not great
i playe this role on stage a few years ago....maybe you could check it out ... leave a comment and let meknow how I did?
kathytwloha
Very Very top
Even if his voice isn't perfectly suited for musical theatre, the emotion in his voice is fucking heart-wrenching and he plays Judas so damn well
I prefer this. It has way more weight because it is so raw. I find the polished versions boring.
They did mess him over for this recording, they auto tuned him without warning
Ahhh this always makes me cry! Judas has such an amazing voice and the “imperfections” (not really but that’s what some people call it) with his emotions like voice cracks and shortages really help the emotion and his voice is so unique with how it sounds. And omg Judas is my favorite character I cried so much when he died in the live version. Tim Minchin is a very great singer and everything it’s amazing!
thank you!, I agree so much!!
crikey kiosk Finally!!! Someone who appreciates Judas as much as me!!
The emotion he shows as Judas is amazing! I just bought the DVD and This part I cry every time. Tim is the man!
I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a fan of this musical but this version was pretty great. The visuals, particularly in this song were really cool and god damn (pun not intended) Tim Minchin is clearly giving this role his all that is undeniable. Props were props are due
i agree
Why did they put AutoTune on the soloists? It's painfully evident.
Because when Tim was cry/singing he was singing nearly a tone flat, they needed to have it F# but if he sung it too flat it wouldn't sound good at all. At least this follows general musical convention.
Thomas Gray I wish they hired someone who could actually sing the role. What were Danny Zolli, Drew Sarich or Tony Vincent doing at this time?
Because ALW is an idiot
+gasmmusic he can hit most of the notes pretty well, the only song he struggled with really it this song. And that's understandable, I mean listen to it. He has to put a lot of emotion into the performance as well as singing it.

My God, I saw him!
He looked three-quarters dead
And he was so bad
I had to turn my head
They beat him so hard
That he was bent and lame
And I know
Who everybody's gonna blame
I don't believe he knows
I acted for our good
I'd save him all the suffering
If I could
Don't believe,
For our good
I'd save him,
If I could
Cut the confessions,
Forget the excuses
I don't understand
Why you're filled with remorse
All that you've said
Has come true with a vengeance
The mob turned against him,
You backed the right horse
What you have done
Will be the saving of Israel
You'll be remembered
Forever for this
And not only that,
You've been paid for your efforts
Pretty good wages
For one little kiss
Christ, I know you can't hear me
But I only did what you wanted me to
Christ, I'd sell out the nation
For I have been saddled
With the murder of you
I have been spattered
With innocent blood
I shall be dragged
Through the slime and the mud
I have been spattered
With innocent blood
I shall be dragged
Through the slime and the...
Slime and the...
Slime and the mud!
I don't know how to love him
I don't know why he moves me
He's a man,
He's just a man
He is not a king
He is just the same
As anyone I know
He scares me so
When he's cold and dead
Will he let me be?
Does he love...
Does he love me, too?
Does he care for me?
My mind is in darkness now
Oh God, I am sick!
I've been used
And You knew all the time!
God, I'll never, ever know
Why You chose me
For Your crime!
Your foul, bloody crime
You have murdered me
You have murdered me
You have murdered me,
Murdered me, murdered me,
Murdered me, murdered me!
Jesus!
Poor old Judas........
So long Judas........
Poor old Judas......
So long Judas.......
Poor old Judas........
So long Judas........
Poor old Judas.........
So long Judas.........
0:32 is so fucking impressive
Wow, That Auto Tune just ruins everything .
yeah
definitely. Tim can usually hit those high notes, the autotune just fucks it up
Tim agrees with you
it's like they used the auto-tune to change his phrasing and tone... Minchin could definitely sing this, I've heard him singing live and he's got the range for it (though I've only found a version of heaven on their minds of him without auto-tune). anyone know where I could find some bootlegs of this tour? cause I really wanna hear this as he actually sung it.
where have you found the un-auto tuned version of heaven on their minds??
I've got a couple on my channel, whole thing's on my computer if you want to hear any particular songs.
+Kirill Podzorov I would love to hear all the songs with Tim Minchin in, if that is at all possible
+Amie Jones type in Tim Minchin heaven on their minds and it's the one at Manchester arena
I learned about Jesus Christ Superstar (this version in particular) in 8th Grade, and the moment I heard this song, my heart broke. Judas had been my favorite character throughout the entire musical. Thats what tim michin does- he is genius
I feel you
I saw this while it was recorded and when it was just in Birmingham and everyone was amazing but Tim (Judas) really stood out and so did Alexander (Pilate)
How did they pull off the hanging? It looked so real
Ok, so I've watched it over and over again and this is what I think. If you notice when the one guy pulls his head back by his hair, Tim keeps the one side of his coat closed. As he is climbing the stairs, you can see the hook pushing through his coat. I think when he ties the scarf to the tree, he hooks the wire onto tree. Then the extra tying is just for show.
Some Judas actors actually died attempting that trick, they ended up actually hanging themselves
Tim Minchin is the BEST Judas I have ever heard
I know he’s amazing!
Love Tim but his vocals have been isolated and tuned in this
Might be 2 years late but he didn't like how they changed his voice in it
he complained but he could do anything about it
It turns out the director actually Autotuned his voice because he didn’t Want him for the part so he deliberately sabotage him
Annas and Caiaphas are tremendous. The band sounds great. The chorus sounds good but they could be a little spookier and darker, vocally. That's all.
gasmmusic Annas and Judas are autotuned
was that long note from annas in the begginning and autotune thing or was it intentional because it sounded really out of place
I actually think that the fact that he doesn't have the best vocal ability gives the whole thing character, and he's by far the best judas because of his theatricality
He sounds like a robot...
@@malzo2154 because they auto-tuned the frick out of him.
i love this musical, i think tim minchin does a great job playing Judas!
amazing show just great filled with emotion and tim minchin is the best judas EVER!!!!
Did anyone see the new production they did live on american tv recently? I feel that they totally chickened out of Judas' death
They did, but Dixon as Judas was the best part of that show. His performance was outstanding.
John Legend however...oh dear
I think it because they didn't want to risk any accident happening on live television or make things too "scary" or inappropriate
There was one production (maybe more, but I only know the one) where Judas' actor actually accidentally hung himself because the stunt went wrong
Tim tim tim MINCHIN
Amazing. Bloody amazing. Can't wait to see it next week!!!
Anybody notice that in this version he hangs himself with the Jewish prayer shawl that he uses as his scarf? I think it's really symbolic of how everything unraveled for him.
0.28.... * fans oneself *
I wish there was a video of the whole thing on youtube

@HUUUUUURRRR that makes sense
Thank u andrew Lloyd webber
i fucking love this part fuck fuck
not a patch on the original or the 2000 version
Everyone be like Tim Minchin and I'm the only weirdo being like Tim Rogers ._.
Are they, um, autotuned?
Heavily autotuned! All of the cast is!
I played this role on stage recently... maybe you could take a look and leave a comment .... let me know what you think?
My God! I saw him, he looked three-quarters dead

What if judas never died what if he was alive right now
How high are you, buddy?
He would have gone to heaven and not hell
Carl Anderson = Judas. Period. This is just OK.
