Happy day. Nice variety to watch grow up, so cool. Only one way to find out if they'll peck at the plastic. A 2 feet strip of cardboard around the base would keep them from that, but it would ruin their view. I'd just watch them for now, which I'd be doing anyway since they are so fun to watch. Enjoy.

Cardboard! I wish I had thought of that! You'll see why tomorrow.

Good for you getting your pullets from a reputable breeder. I learned the hard way; huge difference from acquiring pure-bred Black Copper Marans from reputable breeder vs hatchery. Huge Difference. Congratulations are bringing home your new pullets.

I see one (maybe two) of the BC Marans that looks like a cockerel to me (larger combs). The rest look like pullets but I can't tell for sure without seeing their combs closer. Americaunas can be really hard to tell. They have the pea comb. If you can see a row of 'peas' down the middle of their comb, it's probably a cockerel. Also, the cockerels will have thicker legs and are usually taller than the pullets.

Thank you! Hopefully it is only one cockerel. If not, we're two months out from making our first culling.

What do you plan to do with all the eggs? That will be a lot of eggs for 3 people.

We eat A LOT of eggs! We eat a primal diet (no grains / legumes etc) so breakfast each day is some variation of eggs. Plus, we have the occasional frittata for dinner. Once everyone is in production, our daily surplus will be small. We will probably give some to friends and neighbors.

Florida Whites make a great pet\meat breed if you can find them. They're about the biggest you may want your son handling.

Very good video, I love the way you explain, thereby teach the way you do things. Love, love, love those poufy Ameracana cheeks, and such gorgeous color!
I see some knee high boots for Little Buddy in the future, kids and mud puddles, it's a love affair for little ones! Just curious, how many days a year does it rain where you are, it seems like you've had tons of rainy days (a couple of weeks?) so far this fall, how much snow are you expecting to get during the winter? (we're in mid Illinois so some years we lots more snow than others, generally not more than a few inches at a time, generally)

Thank you Kylia! We normally only get about 30" of rain per year. This has been a very different year. We had a very mild summer with more rain than usual. Over the month of October, it has rained every day but 4. I left a 1/2 gallon mason jar outside and it is nearly full of rain water now.
We're expecting a serious winter. The weather people say we're experiencing a La Nina which means lots of precipitation - snow. It will be measure in feet, not inches.
