Hey - I just wanted to pass on feedback - this was a great video. I just got something similar from Synology and it doesn't explain things well. You really helped out particularly explaining the options. Keep up the good work :)
I have tried several of NAS like Qnap, Netgear, WD, Free NAS, TerraMaster and Buffalo and I ended up buy the synology 2413+ in 2013 and still running solid. one of the most reliable piece of hardware that I own.
New here. Just wanted to say thank you for this video. Very informative.😊 I’ve been wanting to get one these for a very long time now, but always felt like I’d never be able to set it up myself and would have pay someone who’d most likely charge me a ridiculous price to to this. Good to know I can do this myself and save some money at the same time.😂
What would make this perfect would be a 10Gb ethernet port or at least the option to add 10Gb ethernet. While the 1Gb ports are sufficient for media streaming and most other work, hooking your workstation to the NAS box with 10 Gb would really help with tasks like video editing and other bandwidth-intensive applications. Direct Attached Storage, or DAS boxes, are typically better for these types of jobs, but with 10Gb ethernet this box would work as well as DAS while still offering all the benefits of NAS. I run a lot of virtual machines on my workstation and currently have to use a DAS box for the speed and a NAS box for everything else.
Yep , totally agree with you on that , if it had a 10gb port I would have considered a upgrade from my DS918+ . You can`t even install a USB3 to 2.5/5gb ethernet due to no driver support which had been asked for in the support forms for years. So I think Qnap has the edge there , but I like Synology because of BTFS over Qnap`s snap shots, Which puts corrupt data back , but how to you know your data is corrupt ?.
If you want to copy or move files around inside the Synology NAS or to or from USBs plugged in, be sure to do this by File Station and not thru the PC interface which can get very slow!
THANK YOU! I hope this will solve my problem. Want to save all my data from external drives to my NAS. Normally I get around 170 MB/s, but copying to the NAS is only 90 MB/s. I hope this is the solution. Thanks a lot!
This was very straightforward and very easy to understand. You have a gift to explain complicated things in a way that makes then understandable. THANK YOU!

Thank you, I showed my fiance this video to help her learn what SHR-2 & SHR-1 is and why its so damn good compared to standard RAID (only for home / small business, that is).
I have an old DS218 and it still works great. I thought about upgrading but Synology has nothing for media horders. No USB C or Thunderbolt for quick offload or upload and no HDMI output. I ended up using my 2018 Mac mini as my media server while my old Synology backs up in the distance.
whats the workaround if don't want to delete your media files off your hard drive in Installation Process? Eventually shucking my 2 WD easystore 10 TB Hard drives to a Synology NAS.
Great video & very helpful, but where is the link regarding encryption you mentioned at 22:41? As to the sluggishness of Parity Consistency, see Storage Manager > Storage Pool > Configurations and click (*) Run RAID resync faster. This will lift the minimum speed to 300 MB/s from 10 MB/s. Btw, I watched this video maybe a dozen times to become comfortable setting up my new DS920+ w/ 4-Samsung 860EVO 2TB SSDs. You really helped my migration from my dead-simple but feature-limited Drobo FS (which died) to the new Synology. So many choices!
Have a question the USB port on the back could you use a powered USB hub with that?, have you tried it? According to Synology they say you can not use a USB hub. Why I ask im about to get my first Synology (upgrading from a WD MyCloud) and want use the USB on the back for connecting to a UPS and a large USB external drive for scheduled backups of the NAS. Think the key might be to use a powered hub as im sure Synology are saying no because the port might not power multiple devices properly if a none powered hub is used. What your thoughts on this?
Excellent excellent video. I had a Synology and looking forward to upgrade to a better and more capacity one. You are a great teacher and I wanted to ask if you can make a video on how to host a website or multiples websites on a Synology. Thank you for your time!
I'll have to look into this. My external hard drive didn't fail but it's power supply failed. Thankfully I had another hard drive with the same exact power supply. Very tacky fix. I'm investing in a duel hard drive dock, I'm at least buying two hard drives from now on. I almost lost 2 years of work, not cool.
Nice review. One Quick Question. Lets say I have DS 920+, and I put in 4 drives. Can I have 2 drives working in RAID 1 (Mirroring) and another 2 drives without any RAID.? So let say I insert 4*4TB disks, I have now 4TB (RAID1) and another 8TB from NO-RAID configuration making total usable storage of 12TB?

Hello thank you for your very clear informative video! I bought a DS218+ due to one of your videos, and I could set up easly everything. My only big problem at the moment after a folder shared with my family (with right read/write app-/folder permissions on) is that I don't understand the possible ways guest users can access to my NAS by mobile devices (I tried to put their emailadresses as ID and the passwords I set up, but they cannot access to DS FILE by their mobiles!)...Can you please be so kind helping me to understand how to give them the NAS access from their mobile devices?

Hi! Do you have any answers to this? I was setting up my Synology for the first time. I only have two drive slots and both are 4TB. I noticed after setting up, one drive is "initialized" and the other drive is "not initialized." When creating storage pool and volume, I can only create on the "initialized" drive and I cannot create on the "not initialized" drive. Do you know how can I get this drive to get initialized? Any answer would appreciate. Thank you.
Lon, great video. I'm waiting for my DS920+ as it was suppose to arrive today. Am wondering if you could answer a question for me. I'm coming from a Seagate goflex drive, "15 years old.". It had software that once you told it which files you wanted backed up, it would watch them and if they were changed or a file was added to the directory it was watching, the drive would instantly back up the file.. Is there anything like that for the Synology NAS system ? Thank You
Thanks for the response @@RBzee112 , I'm going to be upgrading from 4X4TB drives to 5x8TB drives, so that method won't work unfortunately. I'll probably just end up setting up the 1019+ as new, mount the 415+ folders, and copy over the files.
Hi Lon, I’ve been considering a nas on and off (for storage/plex etc) for a long time and recently seem to have been “acquiring data” quite rapidly. Currently been looking at 918+ 420+ and 920+ by Synology and the current prices are all within about £5 of each other (on amazon uk) so considering that think the 920+ is probably the better option. What i’m really wondering is would it be possible to start with one hard drive, using SHR, then add a second drive to the pool within a month or two and still be able to set up the new drive as backup protection rather than just add the space to the pool (the data in question would be easy to acquire again, incase something did go wrong in the meantime, just a little time consuming and i do have it stored currently on an external 2tb which isn’t quite full which i quess would be the backup until 2nd drive added).Doing it this way would make the price a bit more palatable as i’m thinking to go with 8tb WD red drives. Eventually ending up with 4 full bays over a period of time. Thanks.
Thanks a lot for this one. Helped a lot setting mine. Just quick question: Is the key used to lock the bays in came with the device or you bought it separately? Thanks again!
Had been considering the DS918+ for ages, then decided to wait for the DS1019+. Saw the price for the DS1019+ was $1150 AUD, so went with the DS918+ for $565 AUD. Couldn't justify more than double the price for an extra bay
I thank you sir for the finest instruction. My wife said that she doesn't want anybody including me (admin?) to see her photos... is it possible that she can keep me out of her files?
KATSUMI YAMADA If you’re the Admin then you can see everything without exception. If she’s the admin she can get access to anything. I imagine that she could encript her data but that’s beyond Synology.
So I have a DS1019+ and I added a 6TB ironwolf pro and I set it up as Basic than I just got a second HD also 6TB but the I went to convert it to a Raid 0 it’s said that I can only go to Raid 1 or 5 then I decided to do SHR so I got the second HD and I did SHR but now I don’t know how to transfer all of my files from the first HD to the second so I can reset the first one and make it SHR! I looked everywhere and there’s no video talking about this!!! Please advise. Also do I have to change the setting from Plex and Drive? Thank you.
Lon, great video. Was interested in this because my current NAS is a DS415+, which I think I saw in your video when you brought up other devices on your network. In the next video, it would be good to understand how well the DS1019+ handles Plex streaming and how many concurrent streams it can do. I run my Plex off of a PC along with NextPVR that I use for DVR with my HDHomerun Prime, and use the NAS for storage. But I'd be interested to know how the DS1019+ handles concurrent streams on Plex (720p, 1080p, 4K). I don't stream 4K today, but could see doing it in the next 2-4 years. It would be great if I could offload the Plex processing to the Synology, but I'm not certain how well it will perform doing 2-3 streams concurrently (1080P and 4K especially). Just wondering what investment I should be thinking about next... new PC workstation, upgrade NAS, replace NAS drives, etc...
How robust is this for video editing among many computers on the home network? Also, I'm considering this for my students in my classroom. I want to make it easier for them to share videos with each other without having to go through their student Google Drive. Thanks!
Thanks fo the guide, the only use is I can’t see my server on my network tab, I can map the drive but I don’t see the server as a pc on my w10 machine, is there any setting needed for it to appear?
29:50, This is what is killing me, NAS won't show on this "computers" section. It used to show but I don't know what happened that they suddenly disappeared.
Hello LON, I really appreciate your videos.. its really helpful.. I have a question-- How can I access the data from my Time Capsule through the DSM ? Is there a way to connect in order to copy lots of files without the need to have a pc switched on?
Does anyone know if it offers admin capabilities? I plan to use this in an office where medical records can be stored and would like to connect multiple systems to the NAS to allow for ease of accessibility; however, I would like to limit what my staff is able to see due to HIPPA violation. Please comment if you can provide insight on some dangers in this setup or if you know if the system has administration capabilities.
Emailed this question: I noticed that there was a usb 3.0 slot on the back. I wanted to know if it's possible to run external WD hard drives through this device? I plan to get this device and the internal drives later and wanted to know if my WD external drive would work in the meantime.
Can you rip a movie straight to the nas with out having to use a computer? Wanting to make it easy as possible like the kelaidscope systems do. All you gotta do is drop movie in and it does it all itself. When its done it ejects movie and your done.
Hi Lion, Nice Tutorial-Review, I need to jump from the AFP file sharing from Mac to another NAS Drive with a better performance, we have not found if this change will be helpful or not, I have found that when i want to access files shared from another technology different from the AFP, I don´t get the option to search through the finder search bar, this feature is extremely useful for the comany i work for, normally there are around 15 people accessing small files, mainly documents from pages, numbers, pdf, docx and xlsx. would you recommend changing to a NAS? is there any NAS that you would recommend to use with MacOS? (considering that for us is extremely important to be able to search for using finder) we need to search through the name of the documents, as well as through the content of the documents.
My understanding on the Synology is that it will support spotlight indexing through the AFP share but it'll also support SMB for other clients. I believe you have to turn on the indexing feature for that - I think I covered it in one of my Synology 6.x videos. We are regularly doing finder searches for video clips on the Synology and they're usually super fast.
I really appreciate this review! And walk though. One question I have is that if I'm using a NAS as a backup for drives on my machine, why not use RAID 0? What would be the chances that the drives in my machine and the drives in my NAS fail at the same time?! Seems like a very low chance.
Red Beard Ops A drive failure can happen. You can run on RAID 0 but make sure you back up your most crucial data, cause if one drives fail then you lose it all.
Hi Lon. Was thinking: I have three hard disks from old laptops laying around. 2.5 inches each. Each one has 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB respectively. Is there a NAS for laptop/2.5 drives? Would my three hard disks work together in a NAS?
You can use your 2.5" drives in just about any NAS including this DS1019+, but what your thinking of doing is not a good idea. The raid setup will limit your drives to the minimum drive size which in this case is 256GB. If you set it up for SHR you'd have a volume with only 512GB of storage, 256GB for data protection, and 1 TB totally unused. DROBO makes a NAS system where you can have different size drives, but I have had bad luck with their NAS performance. Synology has the DS416slim which is a small package NAS for 2.5" drives, but if you want to go with that I suggest you buy 4 SSD drives which would make this an expensive solution, and the performance is not as good. I don't think it would support video transcoding as well. You would be better off buying a Synology DS version with the features you want and one that uses standard NAS hard drives. Four 2TB NAS drives is a little over $300. Four 2TB SSD drives will cost over $800. If you want something smaller you can look at the Synology 2-Bay models, but they only support the most basic Raid configurations.
Does anyone know if there are CPU benefits if you use matched memory modules? Will it go into dual channel mode? I have 12gb on mine, 4 on the board and 8 in the upgrade slot, but was wondering if it's worth it to downgrade the upgrade to 4 so that I have 8 gb in dual channel mode, or of course there's the option of digging into the system and upgrading the 4 to an 8. This is in hopes of speeding up Plex a little.

Comes with the DiskStation in a plastic bag with the Quick Connect User Guide.
Yes keys come with models that have the lock
Your videos and explanations are amazing.. Really enjoyable.. Wish you the best..
Had been considering the DS918+ for ages, then decided to wait for the DS1019+. Saw the price for the DS1019+ was $1150 AUD, so went with the DS918+ for $565 AUD. Couldn't justify more than double the price for an extra bay
In the states right now on Amazon the DS1019+ is $100 more than the DS918+.
I am looking at buying this nas
I was wondering if it works well with quick books and if I can Acess qb from my second computer at home?
Why does Lon's DS1019+ show up under Computers (Network view) but mine only appears under Devices?
Great video walk-through! Thank you 😊
If I start out with 2 Drives and set up the volume using the quick set up for volume SHR, Can I go back later and set it up as a SHR-2?
I want to manage a home surveillance system using a NAS. What do I need? What do you recommend?
I thank you sir for the finest instruction. My wife said that she doesn't want anybody including me (admin?) to see her photos... is it possible that she can keep me out of her files?
KATSUMI YAMADA If you’re the Admin then you can see everything without exception. If she’s the admin she can get access to anything. I imagine that she could encript her data but that’s beyond Synology.
Have you ever done a video on how to migrate your Plex Media Server from a Mac computer to a Synology NAS (DS1019+)?
Extremely helpful video. Thank you.
Thank you.
Excellent video Lon. Thank you!
Great presentation. Learned a lot
How about a video explaining Synology Cloud Station vs Drive?
Superb presentation. Thank you.
What is the maximum NAD hard drive TB I can add to each bay?
Good explanation, thank for sharing your knowledge.
How robust is this for video editing among many computers on the home network? Also, I'm considering this for my students in my classroom. I want to make it easier for them to share videos with each other without having to go through their student Google Drive. Thanks!
It's not designed for that, you would need a proper server with a video card.
Mc Rambro I think he was just asking about the data rates.
Thanks fo the guide, the only use is I can’t see my server on my network tab, I can map the drive but I don’t see the server as a pc on my w10 machine, is there any setting needed for it to appear?
You go to the website in a browser find.synology.com
29:50, This is what is killing me, NAS won't show on this "computers" section. It used to show but I don't know what happened that they suddenly disappeared.
Extremely helpful. Thank you!
Hello LON, I really appreciate your videos.. its really helpful.. I have a question-- How can I access the data from my Time Capsule through the DSM ? Is there a way to connect in order to copy lots of files without the need to have a pc switched on?
Unfortunately it doesn’t support that.
@@LonSeidman Thanks for your reply.. Its sad they don't support this.
Does anyone know if it offers admin capabilities? I plan to use this in an office where medical records can be stored and would like to connect multiple systems to the NAS to allow for ease of accessibility; however, I would like to limit what my staff is able to see due to HIPPA violation. Please comment if you can provide insight on some dangers in this setup or if you know if the system has administration capabilities.
how many unit simultaneously could stream data at 4k h.265 10 bit on local network, seamless?
Hi. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. Sorry but I can't find the review you had promised.
Emailed this question: I noticed that there was a usb 3.0 slot on the back. I wanted to know if it's possible to run external WD hard drives through this device? I plan to get this device and the internal drives later and wanted to know if my WD external drive would work in the meantime.
Only for backups not mainline storage.
@@LonSeidman ok thanks
How exactly do you go about setting up a VPN for your router?
I can't see my NAS in the web, in the Synology assistant I can start installing but it won't due to an error. Please help me
Can you rip a movie straight to the nas with out having to use a computer?
How important is it to have all identical drives in a NAS?
I really appreciate this review! And walk though. One question I have is that if I'm using a NAS as a backup for drives on my machine, why not use RAID 0? What would be the chances that the drives in my machine and the drives in my NAS fail at the same time?! Seems like a very low chance.
Red Beard Ops A drive failure can happen. You can run on RAID 0 but make sure you back up your most crucial data, cause if one drives fail then you lose it all.
Is there a follow-up video for the feat on DS1019+?
Super Video !!! nice !!! and now we waiting for similar video with Thecus NAS!!
