For the Unity developer one, this person probably didn't pay the previous developer and therefore did not get access to the source code. They're looking for someone to replicate the application without the source code, that's basically creating the application from scratch - their existing application is useless. Regardless, depending on the complexity, my team would charge them upwards of $5,000 for completing this in a day (and I consider myself a more affordable choice).

Not sure it could even be done in a day. More than just coding, it is reverse engineer, define "improvements", document requirements, design UI/UX, code, test, and, depending on the app, possibly server and DB D&D. Could take more than a day to just agree on what is needed.
That said, no source code means they do not own the app. They may have not paid developer before, or hired someone to install an app and configure it. Either way, reverse engineering it might expose you to copyright and/or patent litigation, in addition to the risk that Karen might stiff you, too.

The funny thing about the Unity program one...obviously what happened if he offered to pay someone to do it, they sent the result but not the source to keep it safe until they got paid.
Then the person obviously didn't pay. So they're looking for another person to duplicate it and offering to pay them afterwards, hoping they'll give the source code so they can then not pay them.

    Ms. Dobre,
Since you asked for a software developer's take on the comment you reacted to around the 5 min. mark, I thought I'd tell you that what the person is asking for here is a developer to reverse-engineer an existing application. This task and the expectations the person has are fraught with issues, some of which I will mention here.
First, reverse engineering somebody else's application without having any code is, to put it mildly, extremely hard. It is not just a one-day job. Probably not anything less than a week, and that's assuming that the application is extremely simple (and it probably isn't). The task is, in many ways, similar to detective work. It is made easier the more clues that you have, but there's nowhere near enough clues given in the post to realistically give any kind of actual time estimate that isn't just a blind guess.
The person mentioned that it was created in Unity, which implies that the application is probably a game, since Unity is a well-known video game engine. If the application is something like a high-end commercial game, then reverse engineering it will almost certainly take longer than simply developing something else that might resemble it (similar mechanics and game play) built from the ground up. And even that task can take a team of software engineers, computer artists, and one or more game designers many months to finish, or sometimes even years.
Also at hand is the matter of copyright. Reverse engineering somebody else's game could easily make a new game created by such means a derivative work under copyright law, not to mention any of the art assets that the program used, which are definitely copyrighted, and cannot be legally be reused at all without the original copyright owner's consent.
Finally, even *IF* this were somehow easy enough to do all in one day, and if there were somehow no potential legal issues involved, a software developer with the skills to do it would definitely be able to command a far higher rate than just $200 per day. Heck, that's barely a living wage in many places.
    Cheers,
    Mark

    • @michellevi7315
      @michellevi7315 Рік тому +1

Totally agree, but also, as a super low income mom *at one point* there is only so much a person can do. When minimum wage is still 7.25 and I'm only making 9 an hour, there is no feasible way to manage any of that. I understand and completely agree that no parent should even want someone watching their child for less, unfortunately, many of us are in an inescapable cycle. We are then told we are "moochers" or "less than" or "shitty parents" because despite college, (look at the $14 an hour masters degree post for a LEGIT look at what a LOT of places are even offering) and despite barely making minimum, we still don't fall on the lines of "deserving of help". I get this is all a -you had a kid, youre issue- thing but we can't be so ass backwards as a society that we can't see that maybe it isn't entitlement everytime, but sheer survival- and perhaps if we addressed the bigger issues- like pay, and assistance, and whatever else, things could/would be better all aroud.... But by all means, it is FOR SURE the ENTITLEMENT of a (potentially) single mother barely making $10 an hour, who gives $6 of that to the person taking care of my child, I am POSITIVE it was that mother's DREAM to end up single, with no help, and no other options.
I get the entitlement thing but, some of these people are just trying to survive too. Hence why they are asking for a "sitter" and not "professional childcare" (which, let me say, we would ABSOLUTELY pay for if we were able to, because, again, it is such a WONDERFUL life to have to do so...)
I am sure lots of people will have lots to say...something liike "maybe you should have thought about that before you had a kid" or something similar....as if that was even a question? As if every mother DREAMS that their support system will all die or that they'd be left without anyone at all. No, we for sure all just want to ditch our kids and pay "nothing" for you to "raise" them for us. While we work for less than what we are even paying the sitters, but we DESERVE it because our society has decided that everyone is SHIT. If you choose not to have a child, you are selfish, shit, if you have a child and need help, you are entitled, shit, ONLY IF you do it THE RIGHT WAY, LIKE EVERY ONE LIKE YOU, do we deserve to find a middle ground right? F you.

@@michellevi7315 ❤ Being Swedish we have free child care for 15 h/w from 3 yo. It's a life saver to be able to rest a little when home with a baby as I am now. Kindergarten is great, even if we sometimes feel guilty for working instead. But it's this whole society that is fd up. I live 10 h from my nearest kin, and 3 h from my spouse's. There is no support system other than the government's. So thank God we live in a socialist country. 😉 The wink is because I know a lot of American politicians throw a lot of shade on us for being socialist.
No but seriously. I am grateful for the child care opportunity. 😅❤

For the one about duplicating and updating the code - there's no way to "duplicate" code unless you have the code and can copy paste it. Depending on the complexity of the code, it can take from a couple of days to a year to "duplicate" someone else's work by seeing the end result. Think of it like someone asking you to duplicate a house by showing you the end result of someone else's house. If you get all the working parts of the original house and you just have to assemble it with updates, that would be like getting the source code and duplicating/updating it. If you are asked to "duplicate/update" a house by showing you another working house and not getting any working parts to use, and then expecting it the day after for a measly price, that's fucking AUDACITY.

The folks at the airport were so sweet; they just deflated the balloon and let me take it along in my bag without the air in it. My husband is a programmer and I'll tell you there's no way someone can duplicate a program without the code in just a day.... This could potentially take months depending on what the program is.
If it's really simple and you find some open source code that works well enough for it then it could take as little as a week and even then not for as little as $200.
His best bet is to find someone who's already coded something similar and is willing to part with the program for just $200... That is possible if the program isn't too complicated, but any professional programmer who won't leave you with many bugs will charge way more than that for even that.

The only time I’ve seen Mom go nearly-Karen was when a hotel front desk worker said that a third person could not be added to a two-person suite and already had a dog (we were getting the flooring in our house replaced) and so we couldn’t stay at home. Mom explained that we didn’t expect me to need to join them, but I was discharged from a weeklong hospital stay earlier than expected. And Mom was feeling rather protective. I was still wearing the hospital bracelet, and was willing to call a friend, to see if I could stay with them…
It took some talking, but I was allowed to stay at the hotel, though I would not have a key card. Which I was fine with. And I got my dog!

I'm just a junior web developer, not an app developer- but I can tell you that even for just a website, if someone was like "I need this whole site duplicated, but you can't have access to the code" it would take wayyy more than a day of nonstop work. I'm paid about $26/hr as a junior, but rush projects always cost more. So even if someone actually managed to recreate his program from scratch based on only what they see on the frontend, it'd be almost impossible to do it in a day even with extra pay as incentive... $200 (that may or may not actually be paid months later) is honestly just insulting lol

@@kitfisto1827 Not true where I live. You can have your SNAP (food stamps) or WIC benefits revoked if you are found guilty of fraud. Some people have to pay the dollar amount of those benefits back.
I didn't know that until I worked at a grocery store, that if the store manager reports you for being rude, mean or deceitful to the cashiers, you can have your benefits cut.
I didn't believe it until I saw it. My store manager called in some unruly customers to social services and they were cut off. She pointed out the fine print in the documents that recipients receive during training. The store loses money when items are sold incorrectly or switched out improperly. The government doesn't reimburse those funds.
My store was high volume with customers from every walk of life. It did not matter to who they were. Cashiers were taught to be very strict with compliance. Cashiers were subject to disciplinary measures then termination for ringing up incorrect items.
Needless to say, we were cursed out, spit at, threatened with violence, called dumb, stupid, poor, ugly, had food throw at us, or the person just stole it outright and yes, accused of "way ism", even if the cashier and customer were of the same race. 8:41 for reference on the IKEA furniture - that specific model had a call back and we’re issuing full refunds, so the dude was trying to make sure it had some proof of being the right model so he could essentially sell it back to ikea for profit

Thank you for the "Said no person ever except for you" when it was about IKEA. For a moment I thought IKEA must be seen quite differently in the US and Canada than in Europe, lol.
No, I'm not against IKEA. I like IKEA, it's fun and small money. It's just like she said, I know no one who would care if its not IKEA because, well, it's IKEA.

Actually, there was a big scandal around MALM IKEA drawers which lasted from 2016 till 2020 I think, involving 8 toddler's deaths. The IKEA company decided to compensate anyone who returned the cabinets with malfunctions (I think it was the drawers that caused the problem). So you could get around 200$ as compensation when you bought the item for less than 50$. Some people were buying the specific models (before 2020 I suppose) and profited greatly from these. And as a new "repaired" MALMs had different product/ model number, I can see why this person was so adamant to see the IKEA sticker with the number written there.

I'm not sure an airport is the place you want to let go of a balloon... you know, on account of the planes, lol.

Shouldn't let go of balloons anywhere. They can end up killing wildlife.

Backwards engineering an app can take months, if not even a year or more. Not everyone codes in a way that can easily be picked up by another coder. Commenting is usual and often overlooked. This person's expectation is way too much.

I'm not a developer, but could have been one. Studied Computer Science back in 1998-2000 but due to health issues had to drop out of the program. I'll be 50 in May and don't feel I have the time and energy anymore to finish my degree (stopped at 86 credits). That regret is something I'll carry for the rest of my life, I often day dream of wanting to write code for a living.

Uh... About the guy with the program. For one, having the program without the source code (which presumably the other person he hired has) it's going to be a HELL of a lot of work: days, weeks, more; depending on the complexity of the program. Plus there's the inconvenient fact that decompiling a program and re-writing it or "updating" it may be completely illegal if the first guy he had make the program never signed over the rights to what he coded. So in conclusion, that's a lot of f*cking work (with a four digit price tag at least) AND might also be illegal.
