I've never delt with Unifi Talk, it will be interesting to see where they go and what features they implement. Also, fun fact: that ringtone those phones use, I believe Polycom uses the same..
Also, all VoIP phones have a pass through PC port. You can do advanced networking and tag the phone on a VLAN and passthrough the standard untagged vlan to the PC port. That way, its one cable to pass two networks, one for phone, one for PC or whatever device you have plugged in on the other side.
The VLAN can be manually set on the phone to an ID or automatically set via a voice-enabled VLAN (I believe Unifi switches has this option) via LLDP-MED

I have a magicjack device that cost $50 and it's cheaper per year ($50 + $15 e911 fee). But I also have a UDM Pro and I'm considering switching even though it's more expensive per month for Unifi service and for the ATA device ($100) but have not switched yet because it's about twice the cost. But I understand you can use certain 3rd-party VoiP providers with Unifi talk. I haven't been able to find videos on how to set up Unifi Talk with a cheap 3rd-party service that is $6/mo. I wouldn't mind switching to use Unifi Talk with a 3rd party VoiP provider but I'm not sure it's worth it for 2x the cost just to integrate phone service into Unifi, for home. Thank you for sharing your video as there aren't many people out there using Unifi Talk for home use.

Are you able to forward the number to your cell phone if you're not home? if so do you even need the physical phone or could it transfer the call to your cell phone right away? Thanks for sharing!

In the phone there is an option to mark yourself unavailable and forward to another number. I didn’t see the ability to do that in the unifi talk app itself so I think you do need the phone for that.

You can have the smart assistant route the call to your cell phone

Unifi talk isn't quite there yet for me. And I say this as someone who has one of their phones in each room of my apartment. They don't have call parking, they don't have a softphone app, its locally hosted which normally would be a good thing, but on the other hand, I can't take a unifi talk phone from the office to my home, plug it in and expect it to work. the flex phones still feel like are in early access. there is no way to change them from having a 24-hour clock format to 12-hour. They only display the extension assigned to them and not the user. the list goes on. Unifi could be great, but it has a ways to go.

It had more features than I was expecting, but I agree there is room to grow. For example, when will the internal camera be enabled? What will we be able to do with it? I don't have the same portability needs as you so as a power home user it hits the mark for me. Thanks for commenting your take on it.

Does it answer the call when you pickup the actual wired handset and then end the call once you place it back on the stand?
I don't see the big plastic button that usually does that by the weight of the phone, I'd imagine a business phone would be extremely annoying without this...

    • @reallyMello
      @reallyMello  2 роки тому +1

Yes it does answer and hang up using the handset. I had the same thought initially because the sensor it uses to do that isn’t that big spring-loaded switch older wired phones have you are referring to.

@@reallyMello I had these on order and was worried about deploying them for this reason. There wasn’t a single video that even showed the action of picking up/ending a call via the handset for this thing.
Thanks for alleviating my concerns with a quick reply 🙏

Well now that you mentioned it I regret deciding not to film that thinking it wouldn't be interesting 😅

do they have a device that take the traditional landlines besides being a VOIP device?

So with the ATA adapter I showed you can use your regular phones and phone lines with the ubiquiti voip

What ATA you use? I have a Obi200 and I’m ready the move to unifi talk but also want to use the ATA I have on the office and house. Like your explanation on this video but you don’t mention your ATA model.

    • @reallyMello

I'm testing Ubiquiti's own ATA device via their Early Access program. I don't believe I'm allowed to review it under the program terms so that is why I didn't go into details of it too much, but it is successfully working to provide VoIP service to my non-VoIP corded and cordless phones over the existing telco wiring. The setup is pretty cool because I can use the advanced features of their actual UTP-Touch VoIP phones and continue to use the phones in the rest of the house as needed.
