I just tried on the Mach X at a Hoka store and they felt amazing. I'm pretty sure these are my next pair of shoes. I was surprised with how great they felt.
I really like the Mach X. For me, it does crossover with the Superblast quite a bit, but I think I like my super trainers a little more stable than you do. I think the EVA carrier foam does a great job of stabilizing the shoe, but I would’ve preferred a slightly higher Peba to EVA ratio to get a little bit more of an energetic ride at all paces. Maybe Hoka played it a little too safe on this one. Perhaps v2 will have a touch more pop.
I love the Mach X and it’s transition to Rocket X 2 for race day is seem-less. I am an older newer runner. ( running 2 years at 56) real struggle finding shoes that work. Mach X is close to perfect no issues taking it to 13 miles. Mine are at the end of their life and still prefer these over other shoes I have for any run but recovery miles. PS: heard hoka is coming out with a second version, I will buy them. But ordering a couple pair of the first version before there gone. I love them that much!
I love brands innovating and its such an exciting time for shoe development. I just wish sometimes brands would not take a shoe from the range add a superfoam and a plate without thinking where does this fit in our range and what is it doing different for a runner first. I really love your reviews Kofuzi and the honesty.
I go back and forth on this. sometimes, I want the brands to be more disciplined and think of things as they fit within the broader whole. other times, I like the idea that management is letting the designers run wild and just make great shoes, figuring out where they slot in the lineup later.
I would love to see some rubber on the Mach 5 (6). I absolutely love running in the Mach 5 but in 100-150 miles the tread is essentially gone from my high impact areas.
@thememedealer5301 I have only used them for road and very light trails and since it's summer I have not had any issues with grip with any of my shoes recently. At this pace I'll wear through half the midsole by the time I would normally replace them though. Will have to see how the grip does once it rains again
I was very much looking forward to the X as a Mach fanboy. I do enjoy running in it, but it's not a more uptempo Mach like I anticipated. It's a bit too heavy to really pick up the pace in, but it is a nice ride. The X has replaced the Novablast 3 in my rotation as an easy day shoe, and I think it's perfect for that. You can even throw in some strides no problem, but it doesn't have the quickness and agility of the Mach 4/5. The only thing I dislike about the X is it's slippery af in the wet. Like, Novablast 3 slick. I don't know how this isn't something that's considered/tested by shoe companies. Anyway, great review as always, Kofuzi!
So i got these shoes the week they came out and have over 400 miles in them. For me, the stack height made it the shoe feel heavy at times even though it is about the same weight as my previous daily trainers. Also i only feel the plate really work when i run at a very fast pace (
Kofuzi… I didn’t watch your video until after I tried on the shoe at a store today, and your assessment is 100% spot on. Unlike the Mach 5, this shoe felt uninspiring. As much as I wanted to like it, I simply didn’t. I will stick to the Mach 5 and Novablast for the moment that, as for you, work beautifully for me.

You are right when you say the sizing is a bit off. I have the Mach 5 and want to "upgrade" to the Mach X. However, fitting the Mach X, its a bit short and a bit narrow around the metatarsal area. I went a half-size up, but felt its a bit long. Then after, I tried the Adidas Takumi Sen 9 and the Asics Novablast 3 in the same size and found the toe box more spacious. So I'm still sticking to the Mach 5 until they release a Mach X wide version .

being a fan of both Mach 4 & 5, I truly agree with your observations on this new Mach branch, which begs the question about what purpose really fulfills when other shoes within HOKA have already achieved what it's supposed to be doing, so It looks to me like Mach X is about a nice looking "hybrid" do-it-all product. 🤷♂
Got them for 100bucks so it was basically a no brainer for me. Its my first Hoka, my main brands are usually Saucony, Mizuno and Nike... The Mach X is... difficult to rate for me. My Top pick is still the endorphine speed 3, where every shoe has to measure itself with it. I think the speed 3 is more fun but I feel more secure in the Mach X, especially if my muscles starts to fatigue in longer training runs. I wont race in it, I dont know why hoka advert it as a racing shoe... its racing ready ye, you can do it. But there are definitely better options for it for basically the same price.
I used both the Mach 4 and the Mach 5 in the past. I even ran my first marathon in 2022 in the Mach 5s. Needless to say, these are my favorite Hoka shoes so far but man... they wore out so quickly. I didn't get more than 450 KMs out of each pair before the foam became really stiff and non-responsive leading to various degrees of pain in my calves and knees. I'm not even that heavy, at the time I was sitting at about 85kg. I got excited when I saw that the Mach X will have a rubber outsole and a different foam configuration, but uf... that price. Also, one of the major selling point for me regarding the previous Mach models was the lower stack height which is now also gone. Yeah. Time to try something else.
85kg is pretty heavy for the target market in running. I'm even heavier than you (93-95 kg) so I totally understand your frustration. Probably need to look at better foams than pure EVA (with those associated costs...😢)
Thanks for great review ; I am still thinking a great daily trainer with a race day shoe is still the way to go for most runners; but I do love the saucony speed series so I suspect hoka is trying it out to compete with that shoe ; maybe they will really nail it with future versions.
I have worn out a number of Hoka models, but what I like Hoka to do is to make 3 third version of their Hoka One One Clayton. The second version of the Hoka Clayton had the best upper quality of any running shoes I have ever had in being so solid with also an improved sole. But the sole of the Hoka Clayton had one weakness since the front sole tended to hit up a bit if you did not get a perfect strike angle to the ground when you felt a bit tired. This weakness can easily be fixed with carbon plate in the sole. I could walk in the snow with the second version of the Hoka Clayton without getting wet if the snow was not very wet. They also had some great colors with Hoka Clayton version 2 and Hoka Clayton 1. I like Hoka and other brands to have an all black model because then ok for wearing a dress. Yes, not the normal thing, but what the heck, I prefer comfort with no blisters!😃
I have both I also heard the Mach X was small, went up half a size but didn’t like how it felt in the toes, so i went back down to my normal size it fits better. It feels slightly more narrow then the mach 5. So maybe go wider they offer a wider size. I have 40 miles on the Mach X, and overall like it better feels quicker to me., and although its too early to tell it seems to be wearing less for me, I’m a heal striker and the Mach 5 wore out fast. The plate is not noticeable to me, at least not like a vaporfly plate it must be for stability. Im happy with it it will be apart of my 4 shoe rotation.
Great review, Kofuzi! Now I’m even more torn. Loved the Mach 5 for my marathon last year and just want to add some pep to the arise while keeping the cushioning for this year’s marathon (my third). Been looking at this one, the Mach 5, ASICS Novablast, Puma Hyperion Nitro and Saucony Endorphin Speed 3. As an almost 5 hr marathoner, the cushioning is essential. As someone with sensitive toes (read: blood blisters on the same three digits when covering long distances), an ample toe box is essential (or maybe not?). And so my dilemma, 5 weeks from race day, is which one to go for?
If you’ve had success with the Mach 4, another Mach 5 or the Mach X would be the first places to look. Novablast 3 and Endorphin Speed 3 are also great choices
I had a fix that I need a pair of Hokas, saw these discounted at 140$ and they felt a great fit, so I got them almost immediately. Being my first Hoka, I really like the fit, stability and look. But they don't feel that responsive, contrary to how Hoka presents them. I only got a 10km run in them, so probably need to reach at least 50km to make a more informed opinion, but so far these seem like a reliable trainer, but for the race day I will go with my Adidas Adizero Prime X Strung. Maybe that's also the issue, because I'm subjectively comparing them to Adizero Prime X which probably have some of the strongest responsiveness and bounce among pro shoes. However when I reduce the pace or just walk in them I feel like I am going to break my ankles any moment now. On the stability side, Mach X are on the opposite end - wide sole and they feel really stable.
I love running in the Mach 5, it's been my favorite shoe this past year, but my biggest complaint is it's short lifespan. The exposed foam sole wore down quickly, the heel began to separate from the upper, and it lost that lively springiness I loved in the beginning after only 100 miles or so. I'm really interested in the Mach X but I wonder what you would expect from it in terms of longevity?
I am really hoping this one is going to be the next Rocket x 2 trainer... I love my Rocket x 2's AND the Mach 5's hopefully this will be the bridge in-between.

On my third run in it, the Mach 5 gave me a blister on the right side of my second biggest left toe. It's something that has never happened to me before in any other running shoe, so they must be narrow AF in the toe box. I'm hoping it was a one off, because underfoot I think the Mach 5 feels awesome.
Hi great review. Is this good option for a more heavier running with a more heel strike and fast heel pain and looking for tempo/ short interval / threshold session for 5-15km that is protective. I think speed 4 can also has this heel to toe rolling but is less stable. Puma deviate nitro 2 perhaps more toe rolling? Or do you disagree or advice a other shoe.?
I find it interesting you think the issue was the plate and how it dampens the ride. I have about 100 miles on mine and my main issue was also the plate but in a different way. I think the plate in this shoe could've done more since I can barely feel it. I think the plate is way too flexible and it doesn't provide me that pop that I look for in a "super trainer" of this kind. I say add more PEBA up front and stiffen the plate up just a tiny bit more and this shoe should be a winner.

Most often I run 10-12k, sometimes fast 5k, sometimes 20k... I'm looking another pair of shoes, mainly to not kill both pair of mach 5 too fast 😀
This sounds like it might work for me (Novablast was too squishy for me), but wonder if it's redundant with the Superblast, which I LOVE! That said, Superblast in rain is not pleasant at all and feels super sketchy. How do you think the Mach X outsole would manage in the rain?

the Mach 5 is available in a wide version. Did you accidentally get a wide instead of normal one? That happened to me and when i got the non-wide version it fits much better!
Thanks Professor- I wanted to like the Mach X- and hated it. First one had to return too small. Second one drove me nuts with the short tongue bunching up and slipping down. I think this shoe is a BONDI X2. Was disappointed.
Seems like a trend to very thin outsole rubber and I wonder if this cuts down on the number of miles you get out of shoes today. I've seen this on many shoe reviews and it's quite a difference compared to something like the NB 880 which has more substantial rubber. Sorry to detract from this specific shoe - just something I noticed at the start. The details in your reviews, in terms of technical and functional use and in comfort details is amazing.
If you are looking to get more than 600 miles from a shoe, then possibly. Otherwise, more rubber is just a security blanket for shoes in this subcategory
NB has really durable shoes compared to a lot of the rest. Some Hoka and other branded shoes don't even have rubber on the outsole due to the foam (which is less durable but lighter). Saucony is also known to have less durable shoes because they have a thinner rubber outsole or none at all.
@@Bruh168 My son wore down the outsole in the Fresh Foam More v2 in 200 miles and I've seen comments in Reddit about excessive wear in the More v3 and v4. The More v3 is in my rotation now but I just started using them. The 1080v10 is great - looks like 400 miles easy. The 880v12 looks great too. The 1080v12 seems more like it will go the way of the More v3. So I think that NB going to the larger footprints has reduced the durability of the outsole. I'm taking a look at the Gel Nimbus 25 at the local store because it's available in 4E. I really like the 1080v12 and More v3 - just one more thing for them to fix one of these versions.
@@movdqa Ah that's interesting. I guess the 1080 and 880 are more of the workhorse daily trainers so they're more durable. Companies do have to make a decision though, because some people complain about the weight of added rubber while others complain about durability. I personally would prefer durability in a daily trainer as the speed wouldn't matter as much.
And as for the weight of the runner? I weigh 83kg and I'm looking for a shoe without a plate for an IM 70.3 and I have some ankle problems so I'm looking for a stable shoe? Which one would you recommend?
the stack is so high, im the guy who likes something lower like Adios 5 more on the ground, the more protected/stacked with so much cushion ends up slowing me down with more weight, you guys recommend anything else? I am using Boston 12 and Nike Pegusus 38 needed to add 1x more - unable to find Adios 5... feel free to recommend would appreciate it
Got any shoes to recommend for flatt teeter. Currently I switch to minimalist shoe cause my knee was hurting and the pain went down drastically. I’m trying to compete and run long distance eventually and I hear minimalist show hurt in the long distance. Any shoe recommendations?

I think it depends. I would lean towards the Mach 5 of the two you mentioned. But a person who prefers a more stable / less dynamic ride will prefer the Mach X.
Your mileage will literally vary. Typically, i tell people that your body will tell you. Things will start to hurt for no reason. Otherwise, I anticipate getting 300 to 350 miles on a shoe. Or if you can’t remember what year you bought them, they are too old.
I'm running in the Clifton 9 for my long easy runs (6 - 6.30/km, and the Mach 5 as a daily trainer (5.20 - 5.45/km) and the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 as my race shoe currently but looking at the Mach X for a race shoe. Do you think the X would fit in well and how does it compare to the Endophin 2? I'm looking at racing my marathon at 5.15/km.
Great review! I honestly thought it was going to be their take on the Saucony Endorphin Speed, but I am still finding that I am overall enjoying the Saucony Endorphin 2 more.
As far as other shoes to compare this to, I would think the shoe to beat here would be the Saucony endorphin speed 3. I think also the NB sc trainer v2, and the puma deviate nitro 2 (as you mentioned). Although I can't seem to understand what Adidas is ever doing with their running shoe line (along with hoka for that matter), maybe the new Boston 12 is also a comparable shoe to this mach x ? With that said, I think the Saucony endorphin speed 3 is the Goat (as Fordy calls it on his channel).
We seem to be at a point where a lot of shoes seem to be spanning multiple sub genres. A single shoe can be a different kind of tool for different runners
I understand you weren’t a big fan of the Carbon X3, but I wonder how they’d stack up against the Mach X. I feel they kind of overlap a bunch, while on paper the Carbon X should be a little higher up in terms of performance, despite the mostly negative review it gets. I think it’s kind of a misunderstood shoe. People expect a Endorphin Pro, when they should be comparing it with the speed, despite the carbon plate.
Gonna be honest after 50 more miles the Mach X has slowly taken a backseat. They really start to feel like bricks after awhile. I find myself reaching for my mach 5s more
Wish Hoka would move away from EVA and add some rubber for the Mach 6. Love my Mach 5 but wish it was more durable and had some better grip. Mach X was just too narrow and felt clunky imo

What other people intend or perceive to be a direct competitor has no bearing on what I consider to be comparable shoes. Also, just because I’ve listed only two comparison shoes, it does not mean that all other shoes are incomparable
I think we all know what shoe Hoka was really chasing with this one 👀 -Endorphin speed 3. Nice try tho Hoka. Maybe next year. In the words of Fordyruns- “ya can’t beat the goat son”.
if you're feet were wrecked in one run, that may be a symptom of other things that may need some attention, such as mobility work. that being said, super squishy shoes indeed aren't for everyone. to me, that is the essential premise behind this entire shoe
@@kofuzi Thanks for replying. But regular runner here. About 5 k daily. Got totally taken in by Novablast 3. Didn't suit me at all. My feet recuperated after 3 weeks of therapy. I'm doing fine now. But no fancy squishy shoes with crazy outsoles. Prefer to stick to traditional basics - thanks to my experience. But to each his own.

I have both I also heard the Mach X was small, went up half a size but didn’t like how it felt in the toes, so i went back down to my normal size it fits better. It feels slightly more narrow then the mach 5. So maybe go wider they offer a wider size. I have 40 miles on the Mach X, and overall like it better feels quicker to me., and although its too early to tell it seems to be wearing less for me, I’m a heal striker and the Mach 5 wore out fast. The plate is not noticeable to me, at least not like a vaporfly plate it must be for stability. Im happy with it it will be apart of my 4 shoe rotation.

Great review, Kofuzi! Now I’m even more torn. Loved the Mach 5 for my marathon last year and just want to add some pep to the arise while keeping the cushioning for this year’s marathon (my third). Been looking at this one, the Mach 5, ASICS Novablast, Puma Hyperion Nitro and Saucony Endorphin Speed 3. As an almost 5 hr marathoner, the cushioning is essential. As someone with sensitive toes (read: blood blisters on the same three digits when covering long distances), an ample toe box is essential (or maybe not?). And so my dilemma, 5 weeks from race day, is which one to go for?
If you’ve had success with the Mach 4, another Mach 5 or the Mach X would be the first places to look. Novablast 3 and Endorphin Speed 3 are also great choices
I had a fix that I need a pair of Hokas, saw these discounted at 140$ and they felt a great fit, so I got them almost immediately. Being my first Hoka, I really like the fit, stability and look. But they don't feel that responsive, contrary to how Hoka presents them. I only got a 10km run in them, so probably need to reach at least 50km to make a more informed opinion, but so far these seem like a reliable trainer, but for the race day I will go with my Adidas Adizero Prime X Strung. Maybe that's also the issue, because I'm subjectively comparing them to Adizero Prime X which probably have some of the strongest responsiveness and bounce among pro shoes. However when I reduce the pace or just walk in them I feel like I am going to break my ankles any moment now. On the stability side, Mach X are on the opposite end - wide sole and they feel really stable.
I love running in the Mach 5, it's been my favorite shoe this past year, but my biggest complaint is it's short lifespan. The exposed foam sole wore down quickly, the heel began to separate from the upper, and it lost that lively springiness I loved in the beginning after only 100 miles or so. I'm really interested in the Mach X but I wonder what you would expect from it in terms of longevity?
I am really hoping this one is going to be the next Rocket x 2 trainer... I love my Rocket x 2's AND the Mach 5's hopefully this will be the bridge in-between.

On my third run in it, the Mach 5 gave me a blister on the right side of my second biggest left toe. It's something that has never happened to me before in any other running shoe, so they must be narrow AF in the toe box. I'm hoping it was a one off, because underfoot I think the Mach 5 feels awesome.
I tried on Hokas at the store, and even the wide version felt too narrow in the toebox. Which is so confusing with how chunky the shoes look
Hi great review. Is this good option for a more heavier running with a more heel strike and fast heel pain and looking for tempo/ short interval / threshold session for 5-15km that is protective. I think speed 4 can also has this heel to toe rolling but is less stable. Puma deviate nitro 2 perhaps more toe rolling? Or do you disagree or advice a other shoe.?
Puma deviate nitro 2 is my favorite shoe of 2023 (nonrace day shoe).

I find it interesting you think the issue was the plate and how it dampens the ride. I have about 100 miles on mine and my main issue was also the plate but in a different way. I think the plate in this shoe could've done more since I can barely feel it. I think the plate is way too flexible and it doesn't provide me that pop that I look for in a "super trainer" of this kind. I say add more PEBA up front and stiffen the plate up just a tiny bit more and this shoe should be a winner.
I think they should either add a carbon plate or remove the Pebax plate entirely

Most often I run 10-12k, sometimes fast 5k, sometimes 20k... I'm looking another pair of shoes, mainly to not kill both pair of mach 5 too fast 😀

This sounds like it might work for me (Novablast was too squishy for me), but wonder if it's redundant with the Superblast, which I LOVE! That said, Superblast in rain is not pleasant at all and feels super sketchy. How do you think the Mach X outsole would manage in the rain?
I did not enjoy the rubber outsole of the Rocket X2 when I raced the Miami Half. It didn’t rain, but it was wet in the aid stations
Demoed these for 4 miles and wasn’t too thrilled. Chunky like a Bondi but lighter. I did love Rocket 2, just not the price 😂

Thanks Professor- I wanted to like the Mach X- and hated it. First one had to return too small.
Second one drove me nuts with the short tongue bunching up and slipping down. I think this shoe is a BONDI X2. Was disappointed.

Seems like a trend to very thin outsole rubber and I wonder if this cuts down on the number of miles you get out of shoes today. I've seen this on many shoe reviews and it's quite a difference compared to something like the NB 880 which has more substantial rubber. Sorry to detract from this specific shoe - just something I noticed at the start.
The details in your reviews, in terms of technical and functional use and in comfort details is amazing.
If you are looking to get more than 600 miles from a shoe, then possibly. Otherwise, more rubber is just a security blanket for shoes in this subcategory
NB has really durable shoes compared to a lot of the rest. Some Hoka and other branded shoes don't even have rubber on the outsole due to the foam (which is less durable but lighter). Saucony is also known to have less durable shoes because they have a thinner rubber outsole or none at all.
@@Bruh168 My son wore down the outsole in the Fresh Foam More v2 in 200 miles and I've seen comments in Reddit about excessive wear in the More v3 and v4. The More v3 is in my rotation now but I just started using them. The 1080v10 is great - looks like 400 miles easy. The 880v12 looks great too. The 1080v12 seems more like it will go the way of the More v3. So I think that NB going to the larger footprints has reduced the durability of the outsole. I'm taking a look at the Gel Nimbus 25 at the local store because it's available in 4E. I really like the 1080v12 and More v3 - just one more thing for them to fix one of these versions.
@@movdqa Ah that's interesting. I guess the 1080 and 880 are more of the workhorse daily trainers so they're more durable. Companies do have to make a decision though, because some people complain about the weight of added rubber while others complain about durability. I personally would prefer durability in a daily trainer as the speed wouldn't matter as much.
And as for the weight of the runner? I weigh 83kg and I'm looking for a shoe without a plate for an IM 70.3 and I have some ankle problems so I'm looking for a stable shoe? Which one would you recommend?
the stack is so high, im the guy who likes something lower like Adios 5 more on the ground, the more protected/stacked with so much cushion ends up slowing me down with more weight, you guys recommend anything else? I am using Boston 12 and Nike Pegusus 38 needed to add 1x more - unable to find Adios 5... feel free to recommend would appreciate it

I think it depends. I would lean towards the Mach 5 of the two you mentioned. But a person who prefers a more stable / less dynamic ride will prefer the Mach X.

Typically, i tell people that your body will tell you. Things will start to hurt for no reason.
Otherwise, I anticipate getting 300 to 350 miles on a shoe.

I'm running in the Clifton 9 for my long easy runs (6 - 6.30/km, and the Mach 5 as a daily trainer (5.20 - 5.45/km) and the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 as my race shoe currently but looking at the Mach X for a race shoe. Do you think the X would fit in well and how does it compare to the Endophin 2? I'm looking at racing my marathon at 5.15/km.
I’m not sure it would give you a lot different than the Endo Speed 2

As far as other shoes to compare this to, I would think the shoe to beat here would be the Saucony endorphin speed 3. I think also the NB sc trainer v2, and the puma deviate nitro 2 (as you mentioned). Although I can't seem to understand what Adidas is ever doing with their running shoe line (along with hoka for that matter), maybe the new Boston 12 is also a comparable shoe to this mach x ? With that said, I think the Saucony endorphin speed 3 is the Goat (as Fordy calls it on his channel).
We seem to be at a point where a lot of shoes seem to be spanning multiple sub genres. A single shoe can be a different kind of tool for different runners

I understand you weren’t a big fan of the Carbon X3, but I wonder how they’d stack up against the Mach X. I feel they kind of overlap a bunch, while on paper the Carbon X should be a little higher up in terms of performance, despite the mostly negative review it gets. I think it’s kind of a misunderstood shoe. People expect a Endorphin Pro, when they should be comparing it with the speed, despite the carbon plate.
the eva portion should have been profly+ foam.
I usually use Stability shoes for overpronation.

I think it depends on the level of overpronation you need. This is not technically a stability shoe
Love my Mach x so far got around 50 miles. Had some heel slip at first but after 8 miles or so it went away.

Gonna be honest after 50 more miles the Mach X has slowly taken a backseat. They really start to feel like bricks after awhile. I find myself reaching for my mach 5s more

Wish Hoka would move away from EVA and add some rubber for the Mach 6. Love my Mach 5 but wish it was more durable and had some better grip. Mach X was just too narrow and felt clunky imo

if you're feet were wrecked in one run, that may be a symptom of other things that may need some attention, such as mobility work.
that being said, super squishy shoes indeed aren't for everyone. to me, that is the essential premise behind this entire shoe
@@kofuzi Thanks for replying. But regular runner here. About 5 k daily. Got totally taken in by Novablast 3. Didn't suit me at all. My feet recuperated after 3 weeks of therapy. I'm doing fine now. But no fancy squishy shoes with crazy outsoles. Prefer to stick to traditional basics - thanks to my experience. But to each his own.
