I only found out after playing these first two runs that the shields activate when there's even the slightest possibility of death (no matter how small as shown several times in this video), instead of only significant possibilities of death. The phrase "suicidal instincts" is a bit misleading here. Trust me on this, I'm a UA-camr so I know a lot about misleading phrases.
Just so you know, the shield will prevent you from making a move if it isn't a 100% success. You can override that (click through your shields) and still take the shot and kill the piece and survive.
Clearly, it's way more naive than just "not having a 100% chance of success" given that several of the shots it blocked were guaranteed given his build. According to some people on the previous video, it just blocks all shots when you're in check unless there is only one enemy checking you, they stand directly next to you, you are aiming at them, and have enough firepower to kill them in one shot. It doesn't consider your bullet spread at all and allegedly it will even allow shots that might not actually kill the checking piece (i.e. will cause you to die instantly) if your bullet spread is so wide that you can miss at point blank range.
@@1vader You might be referring to one of my comments and that's all correct and succinct. I can't think of a situation that it doesn't cover off the top of my head.
the shield is there to tell you "you're in check" not "you're going to die next turn" so if you shoot the king there regardless of the shield you should win.Hope its usefull!
To add onto this, its meant to say that any kills are not guaranteed because you are using a shotgun which has spread. The game does not take arc into account.
FinnTASTIQ game doesn’t take arc into account. For example, if you would snipe queen from afar, you would kill her, but game wouldn’t allow you. Maybe if you have arc 360 you wouldn’t kill piece next to you, but game would allow it, so you would’ve died.
@@lady_deaths_head Because the shields will activate if there's a chance of you dying, no matter how small it is. Sometimes it's better to just take the risk and take the shot like in this scenario.
btw tyler when the game stops you from firing and uses a folly shield the game you can still shoot just click two times to use both shields then click one more time and it will fire so like at the end if you would have clicked one more time then you wouldve killed the final boss
22:00 Actually, the Queen was still poisoned so it couldn't attack you for a long time. It looks like the 15 turns poison applies for each Queen individually when it spawns. That's btw also the only reason you were able to shoot the Queen at 21:35 while still having shields. Shields only allow shots at enemies directly next to you, even if you have low enough spread that you're guaranteed to kill a checking enemy further away, so if it were a real Queen, it wouldn't allow that shot (without first using up all your shields). But since the Queen was poisoned, it could only move one square, so wasn't actually checking you.

Just because the shields don't let you that doesn't mean that you can't kill. The shields will always trigger unless you shoot the attacking piece at point blank range. But if you have something like the scope or the piece has very low health so you can be certain that you kill then you can just let the shields run out and shoot anyway. That should also have been the case at the end. Had you just shot the king after your shields were gone instead taking the knights move you would have won.
Im practically screaming for the shields. Theres an option to turn them off or change how many there are btw. Good job almost winning though, you did great for your first couple runs

I played this a lot and i still didn't know about stationary reload. Well, thanks, that's gonna help me a lot on king difficulty. In exchange for that information, i''ll offer some of my general gameplay rules in exchange.. "suicidal instinct preservation" can be overridden by clicking through all your shields, it's there to help you, but not stop you, the final click will let you do whatever you need to, but it's on you if that action kills you. It will ignore preserving you if your target is adjacent to you, either straight on or diagonally, and you're shooting directly at them, note that shooting diagonally at something with something next to you isn't the slightest bit guarenteed and has like a 15/16 chance of killing you if you require all 4 hits to land (or worse with more). It also wont protect you if something is about to move behind the target you killed (the cause of 90% of my deaths), resulting in self-discovered checkmate. this knowledge is near essential for the higher difficulties, so i hope it helps. (Yes, if tyler spam clicked for the kill, i believe he would have won).
hey this is a tip, if you have lethal on a piece but are in check by that piece, if you use up all your shields you can shoot it in a last ditch effort and kill it, for example in the end you had 4 firepower and the king had 4hp, you couldnt shoot him due to being checked by him, if you used up all your shields and try'd to shoot again it would let you, thats why it let you use the knight soul card to try to escape even though you die there, you get 1 last turn without shields, and if you end up killing a piece and get out of check from that, you continue just fine
There is one interaction that the shields don't protect you from. If you are in a situation where you have two pieces that are adjacent to each other and you are adjacent to them, and you are in check from the piece diagonal to you (for example, if you have a pawn to your upper left and a piece above you) it will allow you to take a shot at the diagonal piece but there is a high likelihood that part of your shot will be blocked by the other piece resulting in your death. For some reason, shields do not protect you from this possibility.
I bought this game literally as soon as I saw you playing it, it's really fun thank you, I'm also planning on buying backpack here because of you. You're probably not gonna see this but I just wanted to thank you for having a great taste in games. Also hard mode is fucking disgustingly hard.. It is without a doubt one of the largest difficulty curves I have ever experienced in a game so good luck!
Oh dang, engraved scope used to be a flat -26 arc and +1 range purely as a passive. This is an interesting rebalance making it an active ability and it's cool to see you use it
There were so many opportunities where he could've gone for free wins by targeting the king, especially with the piercing sniper shot... yet instead moves away to spend 20 turns on pawns that would've died anyways if he killed the king in 2 turns instead
He never had enough damage to two-hit the king. Therefore he'd need to shoot the king at least three times, which is two shots, reload, another shot, so at least four moves. You usually don't have four moves without being put into check by another piece in this game, and if you go all in on trying to get the king your position and ammo will leave you open for an easy checkmate
I know that you have already recognized that shields activate at the slightest chance of death, but it seems that with the engraved scope, even if it is active, it will still register as if you have not used it and will treat the shields as such, even though you could have a 100% hit chance on an enemy.
3:20 So, I'm not sure if you work this out later or not, as I want to make the comment now, but if you are in check you can intentionally burn through your "Folly Shields" doing an action that doesn't get you out of check but _would_ give you an extra turn. So all of the time you had a Knight right next to you with an Attack Power of 3+ and Courteous Jousting and are checked by another Knight you can do three clicks to ignore the Shields, murk the Knight in your face and then move out of check with your extra turn which reloads the shotgun and gives you back the shields. 4:28 No, it doesn't, in fact it makes Rooks, Queens, and Bishops HARDER to deal with because they will never be able to be right next to you for easy full no arc hits. They can still put you in check from afar and will ram right in to you if you make a found check happen. The only chess piece August Presence even remotely helps with are Pawns. I have found this to be the worst Black Card you can ever select with A Piercing Truth being a close contender but that one is conditionally useful if you've got firepower upgrades. On another matter, you can click on the shotgun up where the ammo markers are and it will reload without having to move a square. It still costs a turn to do so but sometimes you don't want to move to have to reload. 6:26 Wow, you found the one instance August Presence did something useful. I normally wind up with everything attacking me from three squares away... . 7:15 Engraved Scope is my favorite Black Card because sitting at the edge of the map and just picking off the white chess pieces is so much fun. Ruins is my favorite White Card because it makes Rooks one shot like you say. That would have been a snap pick for me but from what I can tell you're still getting used to the cards. 7:54 Ah, you learned about the click to reload. Good, good. Not going to remove my comment above, because I comment as I watch. 8:27 You would have been fine here. The game is overly cautious on the Folly Shields. Because of the Scope and not other chess pieces around you'd have hit the Queen full on and killed her, just click through the Shields. Not major this time but something to keep in mind. I wish the Folly Shields would trigger on a found check. I've lost many a run to cleaning out a Pawn by mistake and getting hit by a Bishop or Queen that had been blocked. 8:57 The Kite Shield is not as strong as it seems. It is removed by even a glancing shot so if you take a wide shot across a row of chess pieces and clip two Knights and two Pawns the Knights no long have their shields and the Pawns have each taken one damage. You can then just murk the Knights close up. However in this case Small Fry Harvest is _crazy_ with your other upgrades and getting Pillage alongside it is just bonkers so this is another snap pick when you know the cards. 10:39 Add this to "Clips of moments before disaster" or however you want to call it. Because Conscription adds a Pawn _every turn_ when combined with Lookout Tower. Nice, last second save. 1454 And we come back around to disaster. So close to avoiding it but it's a learning experience. 15:29 you CAN kill the Knight but the Folly Shield is being overly cautious that you will miss because it's not in the ENTIRE fire arc. This is another case of just ignoring the shield and taking the shot you know will remove what had you in check. I'm still so surprised you got August Presence to work this well for you. I may have to reevaluate it. Or it could just be a fluke... . Off, that ending. I made the mistake of thinking Black Mist would save me against the White King on the final floor but it doesn't sadly. A mistake you only make once. I'm not sure if Black Mist works on the final floor all together, I think it is just against the final White King that it doesn't. That overly cautious Folly Shield costing you the win. Killing the King was a sure thing because the entire fire arc covered him but the Folly Shield is, again, just being overly cautious. If only you have just made that third click to see what would happen but I understand relying on Black Mist to do what it actually says it would do. The Giant White King is just a unique enemy in that he _eats you_ to kill you so Black Mist doesn't work. It really should but whatever, just another factor to keep in mind for later runs. Fun video, thanks for sharing.
The shield doesn't calculate if you're able to kill something, it just sees if there's any danger in the action you're making, so if you'd just ignore the shield for the last attack you'd been alive
the thing is the shotgun targets is randomized equal to power. hitting everything with in a arc. if you want to shoot. you can just do it and ignore the shield. that shield is more like a conscious than anything. thats also why getting check mated by killing works.
Something to note: you don’t regenerate ammo when you reload, which is why you thought that you regenerate one round every other round. In summary: when you completely run out of ammo, use your shots sparingly until you have more rounds in reserve
It's not that I want the channel to become exclusively rogue-likes, but I gotta say that the last few games you've chosen to play make fantastic content!
I’ve found that your shield activates if there is a non zero percent chance that you can die, so if there is a tiny chance that your bullets won’t kill something that has you in check then it will stop you from making that move, but after losing both your shields it will let you take the shot anyways. Since your shot at the end likely would have killed the king you probably would have won if you just took it. Not sure why black mist didn’t activate though. Maybe it doesn’t work against the big king at the end idk.
Tyler, those shield things next your ammo protects you from making a mistake, you can change the number of them in the settings. if you want, you can use all of your shields to either destroy the piece that has you check or to destroy a king while in check. You should only do this if you think you have a good shot because there is a chance to fail when I was playing this game one time I was in check with a pawn and a bishop was adjacent to me and and the pawn, I decided to shoot the pawn but all of the bullets whent into the bishop and i lost! it didn't even take away one of my shields and
just for the record, it will tell you that you will die even if you will kill it. but if you shoot it and kill it anyway, the game will still end and you will live. it happens a lot if you are sniping things that can kill you if you dont one shot it. but you take the risk anyway. you would have won if you took the shot. its just kinda a weird thing that the game does. just for future reference that is how it works. the shields are mainly just like "hey this is a risk you may not wanna take" even if it clearly is edit. i just found your message saying the exact thing i said lol. nevermind
you can override folly shield if you refuse to move away after all of your folly shield gone but this is not recommended unless you have guarantee chance to get rid of checkmated or the enemy piece that was checking your white king is not shaking (going to attack next turn) but it can be good for recent moment (you can just beat that normal mode already)
Would be a fun Easter egg if while your reloading for the next level you shot and the ammo that you reloaded was the ammo you get. Then a little msg would pop up saying "That's what you get for speed running game actions!" or smth like that
Think of the shields as a, well, as a shield. They’re there to warn you that you’re taking an action that would kill you. They don’t stop you from acting once there’s none left, so you had shot one more time there at the end you would have won. That being said, I realize that the shields don’t activate when you can kill a piece that has you in check, but I don’t know enough about the game to really take a guess at what happened there.
the game will take your sheilds even if you will kill with your shot because it doesn't work with the big king and it doesn't work with long-range shots even if the enemy piece has low hp. basically you can't trust the game's sheilds. also, another tip is that you can kill the enemy king even when you are in check and you will still win that floor
shields are right, there is a chance you'll miss, the chance sometimes is less than winning a lottery but it exists, and its there to inform you "you might miss, just don't tell me i didn't tell you" its there to counter act the player not understanding why they lost, its there to make it a game of risk instead of luck
yeah but there are also times the shields told me i won’t miss because i’m diagonal to a piece and i have enough firepower but i end up missing because the piece next to me
So glad you picked up this game I have been playing for a little bit and its so fun (picked it up 3 days before you uploaded the video) its such an awesome game
at the end you could've killed the king. Sometimes the game isn't completely confident that you'll kill something, so it won't let you risk your life. If you would've clicked on the king until your shields ran out the game would've let you shoot and kill the King. Great video BTW, love your content
Hope this game gets more content... Because it realy needs more... for some examples: it can add a rerole feture, more progression, and while the concept is good it doesn't need to copy chess... By that i mean it should use the rules of chess(even though this game already twists it alot) but add unique things like archers, catapults, heck make it a medieval fantasy since it would work wonderfully at it. Make one of the bosses a dragon ... Well, theres varry little in this game as it is right now.
Game let’s you click on the adjacent squares when an enemy is point blank if you have enough firepower to one shot, you weren’t clicking on the adjacent square at the end I don’t think

The monsters on A Quiet Place 3 have really changed
17:07 pawns can't kill you though they can't come near you and therefore can't do anything to you.
You could approach the pawns and then have them kill you though, I would agree it isn't that horrible of a thing but pawns can still be annoying
@@alexion3007 Once they can attack sideways, they can also block you in and restrict your movement much more.
the thing is the shotgun targets is randomized equal to power. hitting everything with in a arc. if you want to shoot. you can just do it and ignore the shield.
that shield is more like a conscious than anything. thats also why getting check mated by killing works.
Is it just me or is there no sound
just you buddy
Something to note: you don’t regenerate ammo when you reload, which is why you thought that you regenerate one round every other round.
In summary: when you completely run out of ammo, use your shots sparingly until you have more rounds in reserve
I think what happened was that since the king ate you, you aren't dead yet, you have to digest first. Also the king can't hit you from the diagonally.
It's not that I want the channel to become exclusively rogue-likes, but I gotta say that the last few games you've chosen to play make fantastic content!
Please more Stacklands! 🙏
Me when the stream is a video
I’ve found that your shield activates if there is a non zero percent chance that you can die, so if there is a tiny chance that your bullets won’t kill something that has you in check then it will stop you from making that move, but after losing both your shields it will let you take the shot anyways. Since your shot at the end likely would have killed the king you probably would have won if you just took it. Not sure why black mist didn’t activate though. Maybe it doesn’t work against the big king at the end idk.
Just wanted to say I started watching around poly Bridge 1 and have looked forward to your uploads almost every night/morning
"Queen f3 checkmate"
"NO I REFUSE, KNIGHT SOUL E7"
Tyler, those shield things next your ammo protects you from making a mistake, you can change the number of them in the settings. if you want, you can use all of your shields to either destroy the piece that has you check or to destroy a king while in check. You should only do this if you think you have a good shot because there is a chance to fail
when I was playing this game one time I was in check with a pawn and a bishop was adjacent to me and and the pawn, I decided to shoot the pawn but all of the bullets whent into the bishop and i lost! it didn't even take away one of my shields and
HEY YO WHO TURNED OFF THE SPEAKER!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok they are back on
Want to see the opposite build now. Full damage, ultimate high arc percent.
360 arc?
I bought this game on steam and then realized that I have no way of playing it as a have nothing that is windows…
just for the record, it will tell you that you will die even if you will kill it. but if you shoot it and kill it anyway, the game will still end and you will live. it happens a lot if you are sniping things that can kill you if you dont one shot it. but you take the risk anyway. you would have won if you took the shot. its just kinda a weird thing that the game does.
just for future reference that is how it works.
the shields are mainly just like "hey this is a risk you may not wanna take" even if it clearly is
edit. i just found your message saying the exact thing i said lol. nevermind
my favorite line is now “reload, sniper mode”
you can override folly shield if you refuse to move away after all of your folly shield gone but this is not recommended unless you have guarantee chance to get rid of checkmated or the enemy piece that was checking your white king is not shaking (going to attack next turn) but it can be good for recent moment (you can just beat that normal mode already)
Even if its not shaking you'll lose.
The boss can’t move diagonally, only 1 square in any cardinal direction
Most intense game of chess I've ever seen.
Me watching this in mobile be like:
I am 4 parallel universes ahead of y'all
No audio!
Dude I want to cry because of that end
the game will take your sheilds even if you will kill with your shot because it doesn't work with the big king and it doesn't work with long-range shots even if the enemy piece has low hp. basically you can't trust the game's sheilds.
also, another tip is that you can kill the enemy king even when you are in check and you will still win that floor
shields are right, there is a chance you'll miss, the chance sometimes is less than winning a lottery
but it exists, and its there to inform you "you might miss, just don't tell me i didn't tell you"
its there to counter act the player not understanding why they lost, its there to make it a game of risk instead of luck
yeah but there are also times the shields told me i won’t miss because i’m diagonal to a piece and i have enough firepower but i end up missing because the piece next to me
So glad you picked up this game I have been playing for a little bit and its so fun (picked it up 3 days before you uploaded the video) its such an awesome game
WHO NEEDS GUNS? I'VE GOT SNIPER RIFLES!
*Throws
*I'M... ALL OUT OF SNIPER RIFLES.
Rip the sweet luscious voice of tyler
You can shoot/move freely once you are out of sheilds. I think shooting was the winning move.
Reload, sniper mode
Needs to be put on a shirt or something with the king piece with a shotgun that has a scope on it
2:14 "Nice Thhhhhhhighs"
I can't wait to see if he learns that if he can kill them if he's far away from them it won't allow him but he can shoot
Beautiful no sound playthrough. Still enjoys your videos so much
14:37
Imagine the pawns promoting to kings 😂
It feels like the rest of the kingdom is dead and he is the last one standing between the evil peices
This is sniper king now
at the end you could've killed the king. Sometimes the game isn't completely confident that you'll kill something, so it won't let you risk your life. If you would've clicked on the king until your shields ran out the game would've let you shoot and kill the King.
Great video BTW, love your content
don't know if anyone told it but you can reload the shotgun without moving by clicking on it at the top left of the screen.
The video isn’t working, and it says “No stream tap to retry” (which doesn’t work). I’ve been on yt for 8 years and I’ve never seen this
Same bro
Shields aren't always trustworthy.
Your math was correct.
Ah yes. The description of black mist conveniently forgets to mention that the final boss completely ignores its effect.
Missed opportunity he picked elite gem and crusaders when he could've got watchtower for extra rooks
The folly shields are sometimes wrong, and will stop you from making moves that are perfectly okay
Waiting for the re-upload
Challenge idea:
Take every single bishop related card given (except removing bishops)
Still watching it. Still a good video. Better than the robot voice vids you find on shotgun king
