  • Usually, trees are grown from seeds or seedlings. Once a tree matures, its lifespan then comes to an end without being a parent. Eucalyptus grandis is a tree species that is grown from a parent plant where a branch is plucked from a mature tree and grown to maturity.
In smart farming tonight, we take you to Mubende district where focus is on this tree species that is taking control of farmers in forestry.

i am a Forester from eastern Australia where Eucalyptus grandis is native. It grows on poor sandstone or clay soils with high rainfall approx 1400mm per year. The timber is called 'flooded gum' and this timber, like most 'gums', is second class mid hardwood timber. In Australia, we have better first class Eucalypts, but they take 50 years.

Eucalyptus debate has been ranging for decades and the conclusion has always been, yes, the species takes up more water but its still relevant provided you plant it in the appropriate site (species site mapping). Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus camaldulensis or the clones are fast growing in Uganda. Eucalyptus returns are attractive both large and small scale farmers. With some areas receiving more rainfall than usual due to climate change, Eucalyptus can be a candidate species for such sites.
