    We drive a 1966 Cub Cadet lawn tractor into which was swapped a diesel engine which was then turbocharged. This make for a bizarre piece of lawn and garden equipment.

    A long time ago I put a drive belt on my dad's lawn tractor that was too small. Can't remember how I got it to fit, but I found to my great surprise that not only could I cut the grass, but I could also yank wheelies with it. The belts didn't last long, but...fuck yeah!

    WOW! I'm just getting home from a long night on patrol. It was a nice quiet Christmas night on the streets until I stop a 350Z with the top down at 5am driving like an A-hole. Of course the driver was drunk as hell so instead of getting off at 5:30am Christmas morning I'm home at 8am. I check UA-cam before getting some sleep before going back to work at 5:30pm and find a freshly uploaded RCR video! Merry Christmas to me!

    Growing up we had a Sears garden tractor from probably the same era. You could attach all sorts of implements on it, and it had multiple power take-offs for different types of equipment. There was even a self-powered roto-tiller that could be raised and lowered from the back. It was quite neat.
    Oh and it had a 3 speed manual transmission with a high and low range!

    Awesome, but I wish we got to hear it.
    Takes me back to Best Christmas Gift Ever. 1972, upstate New York covered deep in snow of Christmas morning. Under the tree was a tiny toy tractor. There was also a key with a plastic fob that read "Get a Job!" Just out the front door was a shiny red Wheel Horse lawn tractor, snow plow attached, chains attached to its large mud tires. I was overwhelmed. Many good times on that tractor, hauling friends around on flatbed trailer out into the woods, racing down hills, wheelies, and, yes, making a buck or two mowing and plowing. Good times.

      8 horse and 10 horse power Kohler motors have roller bearing cranks. Ran one for 25 years before it's first rebuild. Good for another 25! Flathead motor are not high horse power due to limited lift from the valves, but are easier to maintain.

    when I was young, single digits, someone gave me one of these tractors. my dad got it running for me and I had countless years of enjoyment flying around the fields of my grand parents farm. it wasn't hydrostat, just belt driven to what looked like a home brew clutch. 1st and 2nd gears were slow, then shift into 3rd gear and it would take off 20mph.

    We've got a '70 Cub Cadet with the 16hp Kohler. After a lot of goofing around with polishing and deburring plus some carb work, it goes about 18mph. The torque is insane - we use it for snow plowing, and even dragged a full-size Dodge pickup with a stuck rear end up the driveway with it mid-winter.

    Garden tractor pulling was a thing around here 20 years ago. We had a very active local club. We had a family business selling International Harvester products up until we saw the writing on the wall with IH in trouble and we sold out about 1982. Fast forward to about year 2000 and my brother joins this club. These real IH Cub Cadets ( Because no IH fan calls the MTDs real Cubs.) were so overbuilt that using them as a base to build a puller for stock and mod stock classes was the hot setup at that time. Bro cruised the want adds, bought several good donor machines and built a team of yellow horses so strong that after bringing home a dumpster full of trophies over about four years with this club, I think they finally just suggested he stay home. Now most good 1962 to 1980 Cubs left are too valuable to mod out for pulling, you see them being restored to dust catchers for collectors. At least that’s the trend I’m seeing. Nice video sirs!

    When I was a kid we had this old Torro riding mower from the 60s. My friends and I took the blade assembly off and put the carb from my broken down honda xr75 on it. That thing was a blast! It was pretty fast and would jump off the ground when you started it off in 3rd. We had a lot of fun with that thing.

    My close friend in High school had 2 of these that he used for his lawn service. His Dad used them in the 60s and 70s for his own lawn service in high school. They both had the kohler motors. They ran perfectly and cut perfectly. Everything on them was original other than like, the points... (Even the SPARK PLUGS were original, they were just cleaned and gapped once a season) They really don't make things like they used to and this is a prime example.

    I love those old International Cub Cadets. I restored a 1974 International Cub Cadet 129 a couple years ago. I got a lot of pictures from when I first got it, the first power wash cleaning it up videos of it being brought back to life and the tear down and disassembly, restoration and finished tractor. It still has the original 12 HP Kohler engine and muffler and I also added a big exhaust stack and installed a custom stainless steel mesh grille

    • @ohlookadragon
      @ohlookadragon 7 років тому

      It may be the only garden tractor that also has a direct connection to the transmission no belts involved unlike wheel horses or john deeres. Panzers have a cut down ford rear end but they still use a belt

      There are a few tractors with direct drive transmissions, I have a Bolens 1250 and it is on the large end of being a garden tractor. And it has a massive shaft drive hydro static transmission. I actually dropped a big 2 cylinder Wisconsin engine into it, and it makes this cub cadet look small.

    I still use the 1974 Cub Cadet my grandparents bought brand new. It mows my lawn in the summer, and snowblows my driveway in the winter. The only substantial repair I had to do was replacing the electromagnetic clutch.

    I love that the engine is facing backward, with the shaft coming from the "front" of it. The pulley shaft left on the front side could be connected to an alternator or generator for an emergency. Awesome build!

    • @justinstearns9723
      @justinstearns9723 4 роки тому

      The original engine would have had a belt driven starter generator on that “front” shaft, as well as the PTO clutch that runs a mower deck, snowblower, etc.

    gotta ditch the hydro. throw something in it with gears and you'll fly. I had a toro with a 10hp Briggs that would pull 40 mph

      Nothing wrong with Toro's ; might be a bit fast when mowing an obstacle course though 😆

    more torque than any honda

    • @gittyupalice96
      @gittyupalice96 4 роки тому +2

      With the multiplication of torque through the gear reduction, that might actually be a fact. Unless you bolt a 4 cyl Honda engine into a cub cadet, then the honda would put enough torque to the ground to snap a building in half lol.

    This has to be one of the coolest videos you have done to date, fucking really makes me wish i could find a solid vintage project tractor. Always have had this crazy idea lingering in my head since my friend's grandpa and him restored a JD 140 when we were younger...

    2 years later and I find this video.
    My dad has a cub cadet of 1970ish cub cadet. She can be a pain sometimes but once she's going she's going. She's decently fast at near sprint speeds.
    We got a bunch of add on parts as well. A plow, a tiller, and mower blades (a few others that I forget) all weigh a decent amount and not a one man lift job.

    Reminds me of the mid-70's Sears lawn tractors my gramps had and my uncle recently restored. He also had a few Cubs from this period too, one even had a dually setup that has a few stories surrounding it

    Actually a 1650 Cadet will fit in the back of a Chev Uplander minivan with about no room to spare. Ramps and two big guys will allow you to push one in without too much trouble (forget about lifting it). A John Deere 318 uses the same Sunstrand hydraulic pump/motor. This class of garden tractor is very much alive today Kioti, Kuboto, Deere and others make an upscale machine for the low low price of 5k to 10k plus toys. The old Cub Cadet is a great low cost platform for a loader or similar project. On the other hand the light weight MTD lawn tractor is a great lawn mower but it isn't built to handle anything more. Cool project !

    Man, this reminds me of my ancient Snapper/Massey Ferguson 1650. 16hp single cylinder Kohler flathead, two-speed hydrostatic drive, hydraulic 3-point hitch, hydraulic mower deck, and electric PTO. After some work to make it run, that old Kohler would fire right up every time, and rattle your teeth out in the process.
