  • Carrying 132 lbs. including jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., on June 24, 1979 the Harbor View Farm's Affirmed added the Hollywood Gold Cup to a long résumé filled with remarkable achievements. In this race, Affirmed also became the first horse to break $2 million in earnings. The Hall of Famer, two time horse of the year, and Triple Crown winner was trained by Laz Barrera. Harry Henson is the race announcer.

I remember Harry calling Ack, Ack's great races at Hollywood Park, and Santa Anita...the 2 best up to to 1 5/8 miles were Ack Ack, and Dr. Fager

1:58 and 2/5 under 132 pounds. One reason of many that Affirmed is my number 4 all time.

Respond to this video... #2 As for the JGC, Affirmed was out of contention when his saddle slipped and not beaten, as you claim. #3 Affirmed was HOY in 1978, not Slew. #4- Affirmed's 4 YO season is one of the great campaigns. While SS fought illness, nonetheless, his 4YO campaign was marginal at best. Get your facts straight before you comment. The detail will embarass you every time.

This was a great race. Sirlad was terrific in his duel with Affirmed, my favorite horse. This was reminiscent of the 1978 Belmont.
Harry Henson was my 2nd favorite announcer; Joe Hernandez was my favorite. He called races at Santa Anita during the 60s and maybe the 70s.

@disciple90633 You are quite factually incorrect. #1 - Affirmed was 3YO and SS 4YO when they raced. Both being great horses, the 4YO has the clear and overwhelming advantage. While SS ran a great MC, Affirmed did have a throat infection and Cauthen was having trouble controlling his horse. Further, because of SS questionable performances leading up to the MC, he was allowed to carry less weight than he should have and Affirmed more than he should have.

@stonerr Affirmed had a throat infection found the next day after the Marlboro Cup race. didn't you know that? Saddle slipped in the JCGC. He beat Exceller when he was 4 years old in the Santa Anita Handicap in the time of 1:58 3/5. Didn't you know that? Slew & Affirmed were better as 4 year olds And so was Spectacular Bid. Can only imagine how much better Secretariat would have been at 4. Doubt he would had to be any better to mash everthing coming And going.

...allowance races and the G3 Paterson (loss to DR. Patches) prior to the MC. SS was fully recovered from illness and could not have been better rested or better prepped for the race. SS runs a great MC as does Affirmed considering the aformentioned facts and the additonal fact that Affirmed had a throat infection. As has been stated, SS was 4YO and Affirmed 3YO as well as a mere 2 pounds? separated the horses in impost vs scale at 5 pounds. Finally, SS did NOT defeat Affirmed in the JGC...con

@disciple90633 Interesting. You threw in the towel and ran away at the first challenge. Debate is just what it is...debate. Funny how, AGAIN, you cant' bring yourself to acknowledge the principal issue, age difference, as well as the other, multiple, details. Funny how you retreat to generalizations and, again, are factually incorrect. Maybe you should try the romper room section on youtube.

@stonerr To the contrary. Cauthen's inexplicable decision to take back, off of Cordero's clever pace, ITSELF constitutes a valid excuse--in view of Slew's near- YEAR long rest, before the Marlboro.
Meanwhile, Affirmed had been battling Alydar, time and again. ...To say nothing of Affirmed's throat infection.
These disavantges, plus Cauthen's tactical error [one that Pincay likely would NOT have made] seem, to me, as *mission critical* as a Saddle's Slip. ...That only an idiot would not excuse

...SS was the place horse and Affirmed was out of contention with a slipped saddle. Affirmed had the better 2YO, 3YO and 4YO season...Affirmed ran 12 more races over his 3 seasons compared to SS...his losses at 3yo and 4YO were a DQ, 2 losses to older horses, one with a slipped saddle and the need for a change in rider. Once Pincay was up, Affirmed was 7-0-0 at 4YO.

@stonerr To the contrary, Slew "stole" away from Affirmed (just as J.O.Tobin ran off and hid from Slew): Slew was well rested; Affirmed had traded blasts with Alydar, reeling off 8 Grade Ones, culminating in a 30-yr +. 3-Crown reign (that still stands). ...Contrast this to Affirmed's JCGold Cup over Spectaular Bid. Whereas Cordero obviously had a "fresh horse* theft on the agenda (to which Cauthen fell prey), Affirmed--with Pincay up--allowed Spectaular Bid four discrete opportunities to get by.

Really good points noting Slew being tested and Affirmed having to battle hard in the Triple Crown. Head to head as older horses with everything bring equal could favor Affirmed.

At the running of the 1978 MC, Affirmed had already run 9 races with a record of 8-1-0, the single loss a DQ for intefering with Alydar. The MC would be his 10th race after a season that not only included a TC but, was the most hotly contsted TC in history. 2 horses of near equal talent neck and neck in each race. The final mile in the Belmont still stands as the fastest ever run with Affirmed winning by a nose. The contrast, not to denigrate SS in any manner, is that SS ran two 7 furlong...con

Wow! Too many people with their commentary here mistakenly have it in for Seattle Slew! Slew was simply put the 2nd greatest racehorse of all time, behind only Man of War. He beat Affirmed twice and never lost to him. He was unbeaten through the Triple Crown series, Affirmed was not. His main competitor in all 3 TC races was Run Dusty Run, an outstanding horse whose career record measures up nicely to Alydar, Affirm's main TC competitor. Let's stick with the facts people, and not let your personal, unfair negative feelings toward a horse affect your judgement.

    • @josephfederico5165

+gpipeline I'm not trying to take away anything from Slew but comparing Run Dusty Run to Alydar? Really? Run Dusty Run couldn't shine Alydar's hooves. Alydar is a TC winner without Affirmed in the same crop. Can't say the same for RDR. He, Sanhedrin and Cormorant were good but even Believe It, 3rd in '78 Derby and Preakness, would have beaten that lot.

The racehorse, Radar Ahead beat Affirmed twice during the same 5 race slump, during which Affirmed went 0-2 against Slew. That does not PROVE Radar Ahead was better than Affirmed any more than 4 year old Slew's two finishes ahead of 3 year old Affirmed PROVE that Slew was better. In this 1 1/4 mile Hollywood Gold Cup, which Affirmed ran at age 4, he carried 132 pounds to victory in a time much faster than Slew ever ran this distance carrying much less weight. Slew never carried 130 or above in any Grade 1 race, period. Slew simply did not have the toughness or durability to compete in, let alone win, anywhere close to the number races that Affirmed did. Slew simply couldn't do it.

@disciple90633 Think what you like about those 2 races.
To these eyes, Seattle Slew only beat Steve CAUTHen, never Affirmed.
Though, for a fact, Slew WAS bested by Exceller--who in turn finished 8 lengths beHIND Affirmed ...when that one's saddle wasn't slipping.
& Slew was humiliated by J.O.Tobin -- who Alydar was able to DEMOLISH -- just as Slew was embarrassed by Dr. Patches. -Neither of whom History will long remember (though Affirmed can wear his Triple Crowns another 33 (or 99) years!
