      It would be great if you could check color accuracy by taking a photo of the print and comparing to the original file.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  2 роки тому +2

      @@chcomes it really depends what device is printing it and how you were viewing the original, and on what screen. There's so many variables involved, you'd need a colour management system to really make a fair comparison. Otherwise what I see on my screen is going to be very different to what you see on yours. Even the same device can have different brightness etc.

      I'm deciding between this model and the older CP1300.
      could you maybe tell me if the CP 1300 also gives you the option to make satin finish prints?
      or is that only an option on the CP 1500? are you happy with the satin finish results ?

      @@dailyreflectionsv to be honest I can't remember the options on the CP1300, but overall the print quality is very similar as they share much the same engine. I generally print high gloss for most of mine.

  • @ElbowShouldersen
    @ElbowShouldersen 2 роки тому +39

    Long-time SELPHY user here... Obviously the high print quality is the first reason people would want to buy this kind of printer, but the other compelling reason, and it was barely touched on in this video, is that these dye-sub printers can be put away and pulled out many months later and the "ink" (actually dye) works just as well as it would have when brand new... The significance of this, at least for me, is that I can print all my documents on my color laser printer, but if I want to print a real photo I can do that reliably on the SELPHY, which was certainly not the case when I was using a high quality inkjet photo printer, since those printers hate to be neglected. I only wish Canon would come out with a larger format SELPHY printer, but actually the 4x6 size really is much more useful than I thought it would be when I originally bought my first SELPHY printer.
    In short: Dye-sub printers are the perfect complement to color (or B&W) laser printers.

      I also agree. Used the Selphy printers since 2004. Don't get me wrong, they're great. But it's sad to see that Canon didn't change the actually print engine since then. They're mainly just putting the printer into a new housing and update display and software.
      I also ever wished, they bring out a slightly bigger or faster version.

      That's the only reason why I kept this printer. It has a lousy limited paper compartibility, and I would return it and buy the Epson compact printer had that printer had dye-sub instead of inkjet.
      It worked better now as a test print before I sent to a lab. The costs of each prints are about the same as the store and I don't have to deal with uneven borders, shrink-to-fit and cropped out. I really hope I can find compartible photos in store instead of having to order it online when I went travelling.

    I used to have a small printer on set for clients to see the day's shoot progress after taping to foam core. Fell out of doing that a few years ago but just recently saw another photographers' work up on the wall (we own a studio we rent out when I'm not shooting) and was so impressed with the quality of the prints. I think it was this printer. Need to get back doing this on certain jobs since I think clients really enjoy seeing their day's work come together with little prints.

    Recently bought a CP1300. From what I can tell, the CP1500 and CP1300 have the same quality (I believe they have the same quality since Canon first introduced those print cartridges, generations ago). The CP1500 has more phone printing options, and is 6 seconds faster at printing with the glossy finish. The CP1300 does almost the same, however give you more buttons wich can help when printing without a PC / smartphone (and I do that a lot). Thank you for your review.

    I had been waiting for the updated model since watching your CP1300 review a year or so ago. I recently bought one and have been very happy with it. The per print pricing is actually significantly lower than typical labs here in Japan (about 25 yen per L size print vs 40 yen in a lab) which is a nice bonus.
    I printed about 200 images after purchasing and do wish that the app was a little more "workflow" oriented. There is a lot of repetition to select options and images (e.g., scrolling through lists of albums on your phone), and you are often kicked back out to the home screen to do it all again.
    Very typical of Canon (and I dare say Japanese) software design, though.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  2 роки тому +8

      Thanks for the feedback, yes I agree, the app is designed for one print at a time and can get laborious for multiple prints at once. That's interesting your lab costs are high in Japan. Some of ours are too, but I was more referring to online labs which can be much cheaper per print, but also have delivery charges and of course waiting times.

    I just bought this model and I'm not all that happy with it. All of my prints so far have horizontal lines across them - I'm hoping I can figure out the problem and get that fixed because I've heard such good things about this little guy. My biggest complaint though is the fact that the paper tray is either sticking out the front and getting knocked around my desk or I have to put it away somewhere, away from the printer. A little slip tray in the back or even underneath where you could store the two pieces together would be fantastic.

    Great video as usual. I've owned several of these CP series printers, and every one of them has developed the same issue where it fails to recognize the print tray, right after advancing the paper through and wasting one picture's worth of ink medium. It's happened to me with two of them in a row, both brand new, within 50 prints. I found that I could spray contact cleaner and compressed air into the sides of the area where the tray latches into the printer and it helps. Or I can also manually hold the tray downward, there's a trick to it, and you only have to do this til it starts printing the first color pass. Then you can let go and it will finish.
    So my question is, did you have any troubles with the print tray failing to be recognized or the printer producing errors about it? It does seem like they redesigned the tray for this model, it looks sturdier than the previous ones.

      @dunnymonster Рік тому +1

      @@opmenglish413 Never had any issues with mine, however I produce my own custom ICC profiles for the " non Epson " papers that I use. Assuming you are using Epson photo paper and you select the correct media type in the print driver ( so if you use glossy Epson paper be sure to select glossy paper as the type you use in the print dialog driver ). This will ensure the driver selects the correct ICM profile for your paper and colours should be essentially spot on. Are you printing through Lightroom/Photoshop or via Epson's own software. You might be inadvertently double profiling ( i.e.telling Photoshop to control colour but also selecting the driver to also do it, it should be one or the other never both! ). If you are printing on 3rd party papers then all bets are off because your printer doesn't know the exact properties of the paper you are using and so will lay down ink based on the media type you selected in the driver. I would suggest buying a pack of Epson Glossy paper ( any one, doesn't matter ), select glossy as the media type in the driver dialog and ensure whatever software you are using to print from is set so that the printer ( not the application ) is controling colour. You should then get more or less perfect prints with no colour cast. The only other thing that might be happening is you've put the wrong colour ink into the tanks, easily done 😮 If you have then you'll never get it rectified without draining the tanks entirely and starting again 😕

    The 2 biggest pain points of these Selphy's were i) WiFi setup and crapware Canon would force you to install on your PC, and ii) slippage of the rubber intake wheels for the paper feed.

      Maybe there's an issue with your yellow ribbon? Have you been through more than one reel yet? Otherwise, possibly a colour matching issue with the app, or whatever you're printing from. You'll need to do lots of tests to rule out certain things, like try printing from other devices, computer, phone, direct card etc, and also try images from different sources, phone, camera, even downloaded from flickr. If everything still comes out yellow, then it's an issue with the printer or the media.

Also, as a 300dpi printer, printing a photo from a 56megapixel canon 5dsr shouldn't be a problem! But that came out a bit blurry instead of detailed.
