I am Tristan, I am building a 400 SF cabin at the back of my house. I plan on doing it all by myself. You should have used your laser level to measure that pillar. Line it with the opening on the house and take the mesurement on the the other side.
Laser level is one of the greatest invention of all times 😆

Love the extension to the rafter tail. I think a lot of people don't realize the improvising that happens when building a home. Even if you have a solid plan, sometimes things just happen and you have to be okay that. Love the vid! 👍

I bet your cabin location is great for star gazing with little light pollution. Can I make a suggestion? If you plan to rent it out, you could add a level 5x5 square concrete pad outside the cabin with a clear view of the sky. The concrete pad would serve as a great place to set up a telescope tripod/mount. You could then advertise the place as an ideal spot for astrophotographers.

@@TheDIYCabinGuy 😂😂😂 I thought a few heavy duty quick release clamps would have helped, as a deck builder myself it always helps to have a few 'extra hands' Nice build.
As a DIY builder myself who's made many mistakes I use screws where I can to tack everything before nailing if I'm uncertain of the finish or haven't pieced everything together/test-fit. It's much easier to take a few screws out if there's a screw up, even if it means having to go back to nail a few things after... This has saved me a lot of headaches.

Hey! I still use screws here and there. For example when placing my rafters to see if it’s a good fit, I used a screw at the top.

OMG you are a riot!
One thought... back when you shimmed or added wood to the one roof rafter that was bowed, have you considered what will happen when you sheathe the ceiling? You may have another problem coming there.
You’re absolutely right, I’ll have to plane the rafter the other way once I install the ceiling tongue and groove. I’ll definitely mention and show that when I get there. I have a small hand planer, I think it’ll be fairly easy to fix that situation.

I just started to watch your videos. I plan to go back and watch from the beginning. An amazing cabin project. It looks great. Where are you building this cabin? I assume in Canada, based on you counting measurements in French on one video. Maybe Quebec or Ontario? My mother’s side of the family is from Inverness in Quebec. Keep up the good work. I have to admit, I did laugh at the extension to the extension. I’m so OCD that I would have to rip out the extension and move them down the 3/4”… but glad to see the ingenuity you used. Will they be covered up with soffit anyway?
The me from 12 months ago would have probably ripped it off to start new but I know now I don’t have time to waste lol so I just went with it. Everything will be covered, it will be impossible to see the difference when it’s all said and done.

What type of wood did you end up using for the big Timbers?
I was cheap , I used white pine. Would have been best to use Douglas Fir instead.
How much was all the material for the entrance/porch with all the large timber frame?
Tim, did you ever get my free cabin plans? If you did then you’re on my emailing list, I actually just sent the February newsletter Sunday where I broke down all my budget so far. But to answer your question, I think all the heavy timber (posts, diagonals and beams) was about 600 or so. The rest of the roof which is just the rafters, plywood and underlayment was probably another 500-600 I would imagine.

I just signed up for the plans today. Ive been watching your episodes over the last few days. I am starting on a small cabin over the next couple of weeks. At first it will only be a 12x12 room. It will be set up so that I can add rooms on to each side as I save the money to do this. I sure do like the looks of your front porch/face of the cabin.

Why didn't you invest in scaffolding. Would have made your work safer and easier. Work smart, not hard
Darren, you’re right, I have been thinking about it, but it’s kind of expensive! And renting wouldn’t be an option since I only work a few hours a week on this cabin
@@TheDIYCabinGuy I wonder if it would have been worth the time to build some moveable platforms. I know the ground is very uneven which complicates things, but I trust in your ingenuity to figure out a solution.
Additionally I think you could use a winch to help you raise those heavy timbers. Even if you needed help to get them into place I think it would be much easier.
