Lol, depends what you're playing. It's really not a big deal. Some of the greatest bassists in the world played mostly pick. You could never play Steve Harris with a pick...or Chris Squire without.

Bass guitar is a guitar, not a double bass. So, pick is more natural tool for this instrument to play notes.
It gets you clean, even tone, speed and precise attack with less more efforts.
Fingerpicking is way more "inefficient", sloppy, with dirty sound artefacts and pitch up when attacking.
The difference is sort of to walk or run on your feets (fingerstyle) and to ride a bicycle (pick style); or to eat food with your hands or with a fork.
For me using plectrum on a bass-guitar is something like good manners.

I like using the pick. It just sounds better especially for metal.
But i do like fingers at times as well for the warmer sound.

Love pick ...with fingers look a little primitive . ( like eating with fingers )

It depends on what you're playing. Some styles and parts sound better with a pick, some with finger picking. Whatever fits best for the music.

It depends. I play most songs with fingers, but for a few songs I love the pick sound.

When the bass was invented it was thought you would use your thumb while using the tug bar. Still a valid way to play.

To my ear, with a pick sounded the best for all three examples. But your fingerstyle playing is still great! 🥲

I've used Tortex greens for most of my life, for bass and guitar. I used the .88 because I like a little flex in my pick. I quickly found out that you could palm the pick, play with your fingers, then bring out the pick for fast passages or whatever.

Never used one. I play guitar as well. Love my Thumb and 2 fingers. It sounds correct. I sometimes need to mute with my picking hand.

When i for example play jazz fusion, i prefer play without pick, but when playing metal i go pick,...for that clanky sound,..also the thickness on the pick is also changes the sound,..in my opinion

I'm predominantly a pick player. I started playing bass in a punk band when I was 13 and that dense wall of sound was hard to cut through with finger style so I swithced from finger style to a pick for that band.
I play fingerstyle as well, for some stuff. Probably play with my fingers more than a pick when I'm just noodling at home and practicing, but with a pick when I'm playing with a band or live or recording. Not always, just the bands I end up playing in seem to suit pick playing better.I do find with pick playing it's more forgiving in terms of practice - once you've nailed it, the muscle memory just kinda stays. If I don't play finger style for a month or two for whatever reason, my playing isn't as "snappy" when I pick it back up - guess it's a lack of finger strength?
Regardless, every bass player should eventually practice and master both styles. I'd feel extremely limited in my playing if I couldn't do both to a decent standard.

Now, I came to the conclusion over the course of playing the bass guitar: Those who bash pick players just seem to be uncomfortable having to use a plectrum. I started out on the guitar and just feel more comfortable and familiar with a pick! Yet, I'm fully committed and would always choose the bass over guitar these days. Playing with a pick is a bonus in skill, I my opinion! Whether a bass player is ought to being able to play with his fingers, is a matter of opinion.

Coming from guitar, over the years I got more into playing without a pick, so when I tried bass again during the lockdowns I tried to learn with a pick, but eventually just got confident enough to just use my fingers. I do copy Andy (from a few channels on here like Reverb)’s“invisible pick” on both though. (Gotta have good strong index fingernail for that.)

I’ve been playing for a year, and trust me bro, practice with both. I play mostly fingers but some songs require a pick when it gets super fast but fingers has a rounder tone, pick has a sharper tone. But both work, make sure to practice both

Seems like Patrick is more comfortable with the pick, his right hand is more relaxed than with his fingers. Boths cool, I struggle with stamina when I play with the pick, so I tend to throw it away in the middle of a song to survive.

This dumb old argument, only Boomer gatekeepers are still squeaking about using picks. Stop it, let people enjoy playing their instrument the way that makes them happy. There is no objectively correct answer, and if you think there is, you're objectively incorrect 😁
